Hi, i have a Sidney Walter Cottingham passing away in Worthing 1973, the informant was a Bertha Louise Cottingham ( wife) possibly not as nothing can be found about her, marriage , remarriage, death etc
There is a death of a Bertha Louise Bailey in Worthing in 1977, so i am wondering if they were in the UK phone books? and if this was Bertha.
Can anyone help please,is this look up okay?

S W Cottingham in phone books at 25 Upper Dv, E Preston, from 1972.
Still listed in 1984.
Bertha Louise Bailey, probate for her in 1977 (died 15 March)

Possibly she is the Bertha L Fletcher who married Sydney A Bailey in Sep qtr 1945 in Surrey?
Would then have been with Cyril T Fletcher in Woking in the free index to 1939 Register.

S A Bailey is in the phone books at Half Acre, Sea Av, Rustington, up to 1973.

According to trees on Ancestry Sidney was married to a Florence C Mercer in 1931 West Ashford, Kent.
They must have divorced as she remarried to an Alfred C D Hogbin in 1956 Ashford.
In 1939 Sidney and Florence not together, nor do they appear to have had any children.
So, whilst she remarried doesn't look as if Sidney did and that Bertha was common law wife.

There was a Mens outfitters in Woking Town centre in the 1950/60's called Sydney Bailey :). I have no idea when it closed. ADDED It was at 22 Chertsey Rd
Probably the same Sydney whose wife Mildred died in 1941, they are in Woking pre WW2

Thankyou jonw65, its something i need to look at then, if it says S W Cottingham is still listed in the phone books in 1984, and it looks like Bertha Louise Bailey possibly isnt his partner / wife
