Title: Missing census pages?
Post by: Gallicrow on Sunday 14 February 21 16:03 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I'm trying to find a particular household in Cardiff in the 1911 census.
Here is the transcription on Family Search:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW6N-TC3

The entry for the visitor "Lancaster Adolphus Knell" is the person I'm interested in.

I wanted to see the original scan, so I went over to ancestry and searched there, but without success. I then tried scrolling through all the scans for Glamorgan/Cardiff/Central Cardiff/17 (199 pages) and finally found the one I wanted - the cover page for the household of Mrs Morgan at 11 Caroline Street on page 96.

Unfortunately when I clicked to see the next page to see the actual details of this household, page 97 instead contained the information for 12 Caroline Street.

Is there anywhere else I can look on ancestry for misplaced census pages? Presumably it's available somewhere, otherwise it wouldn't have been transcribed on Family Search.

Wonderful transcription on Ancestry

Adaljohns Thnell   RG14 Piece 32116 Schedule Number 46

If that fails again - try using Thomas George Nebb b 1885 (another mistranscription)

Thanks very much CaroleW.

It's a very interesting census entry as he (?) has mistakenly filled in the years married and number of children parts of the form, which will help me check the information I have for him.

I'm not sure what the "Lancaster" at the front of his name is meant to signify. Perhaps where he normally lived when not a visitor to Cardiff?

He didn’t fill in the schedule, that was done by Mrs Morgan who also signed it.

Thanks CaroleW.

Yes, I've found out quite a lot of information about Adolphus Knell, though not when he died:
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/KC8T-VHQ

I spent some time untangling the records of three Knell families whose members and records had all been merged together. Unfortunately this led to the discovery that I was unrelated to the family that included all the artists, but rather one where the father worked as an undertaker! I'm just trying to tidy up all the loose ends for the other Knell families now.

Adolphus Knell describes himself as a widower in the 1911 census, though as far as I can tell his wife, Lucy Tucker, didn't die until 1919. Her probate mentions an Adolphus Knell, but that might be her son, Major Adolphus Knell, rather than her husband.

Quote
Her probate mentions an Adolphus Knell,

Lucy Knell widow died Kent 16.9.1919.  Probate to Major Adolphus Knell occ chauffeur

Birth of Major Adolphus Knell 1876 - mmn Tucker

So Adolphus is a widower in 1911 and Lucy is a widow in 1911 - interesting!!

Lucy & Adolphus are together in 1891 but in 1901 Lucy is shown as married but no Adolphus.  Can't see a 1901 entry for him
