Title: Can anyone help please? Westlund Scotland
Post by: AllieElsokary on Sunday 14 February 21 19:14 GMT (UK)
Rose Westlund
Born 1940 Ardrossan, Scotland
I think she married in England?as I can find no record in Scotland, and had a son Alexander and returned to Ayrshire
I know her husband was called Alec/Alex/Alexander but don't know his surname or her married name
Her mother was called Grimes and father a Norwegian from Christiansand? (Spelling) called Peter Karl Westlund
Can anyone help me find her marriage please?

Catherine Birgitte Westlund her sister. Born in Ayrshire. 1936.
Married a Faqir/Fakir Mohammed/Mohamed possibly in England where their mother Grimes lived?
She had a son Terence Sardar Mohammed born 1954 Springburn, Glasgow and 5 other children.
Anyone able to locate the marriage? England? Please 💖

Ardrossan used to be a very busy port and ship-building and repair base.  During WW2 it was also a Military Port.   The building facing the whole length of Glasgow Street, adjacent to the new ASDA supermarket housed the NORWEGIAN CONSULATE.   I suspect that it was mainly an honorary position from the 1960s onwards.
It was still there long after the demise of the port's activities due to containerisation and the closure of the oil refinery and their oil-carrier ships base at Montgomery Pier.
If you can't find anything from Scotland's People site try posting a request on the 3towns site as there are several local historians who are regular posters and they have regular access to the local newspaper archives ... The Ardrossan & Saltcoats Herald, published and printed from buildings just a stone's throw from the Consulate.
cheers, Ian

Catherine Grimes and Karl Westlund married 3rd Qrt. 1931 in South Shields (vol. 10s/ pg. 1660).

Daughter Catherine's marriage was in Bristol, 2nd Qrt 1964 (vol. 7b/ pg. 331).

Can't see anything for Rose unfortunately.

See that after two South Shields births post the marriage, the family moved to Scotland where Catherine, Rose and other children were born.

Have a look here for further searches www.freebmd.org.uk

Just in case you don't have this, adding it here www.findagrave.com/memorial/196532490/karl-westlund

Karl Westlund of Ardrossan.   don't know why the link came up in Startpage Search .. the London Gazette, for official business ?

Also, somewhat confusing, there is an Ardrossan in Alberta, Canada

had another look at the pdf file from the London Gazette, I now think it pertains to applications for Naturalisation as a British Citizen.  Could be wrong though ...

Karl was a dock labourer who lived in Glasgow St. This reminded me that Rose's husband Alec also worked in the docks with sulphur loads on the ships. Wish I had more info on him .😞
Rose and Alec also both had ice cream vans that went round Ardrossan and Saltcoats.

on other searches related to the Westlunds, Ashgrove Road, Ardrossan came up as an address.
The honorary Norwegian Consul (1963) and Danish (half-consulate, whatever that is. from 1965) is Mair Shipping Company, still active with a connection to Winton Buildings ( housing the Consulate) and operating from North Harbour, Ayr.  They are an old established multi-functioning company to do with all forms of shipping enterprises related to West of Scotland ports.  They had some responsibility for monitoring crew changes on vessels using the ports so perhaps the Norwegian connection came through them and possibly a business connection to a company in South Shields ?  (surmising ..).
Threetowners forum will uncover live people who knew the Westlunds.  cheers, Ian

Thank you for the reply back to the PM which I sent you as I didn't know if the persons mentioned were still living - so no connection to the US  ???

I wonder if there might be an obituary for the 2016 death of Catherine perhaps mentioning her sister by name or perhaps she may have been a witness to her sister Catherine's 1964 marriage
or even the informant on the death certificate of her father (MonicaL posted parents grave details)

Karl Westlund age 95 Birth 19 Mar 1909
Aug 2004 Blackburn With Darwen Lancashire
Register Number:   A73B
District and Subdistrict:   580/1A
Entry Number:   229

The only other thought was maybe looking at Kelly's Trade Directory but that may prove difficult as you don't have a surname or an address for Rose or Alec to search with - I don't know if this link might be helpful https://www.glasgowfamilyhistory.org.uk/ExploreRecords/Pages/Directories-and-Phone-Books.aspx

If you, I think I would follow Ian's advice here. Rose and Alec's details are hard to determine without at least confirmation of Alec's surname. No sign yet of their marriage to help further. Finding local people with long memories is certainly worth trying  ;)

Hi there I did try to search for an obituary but came up with nothing for Catherine's death. I doubt she would have been an informant on her dad's death certificate as she lived in Irvine and he was buried in England and I would imagine be to old and frail to attend his funeral.
I have managed to locate who I think may be one of her brothers in Pattaya, Thailand and sent him a PM on Facebook but as yet no reply. Hopefully it is him :) I joined the group that Ian suggested (thank you Ian) and made a post so we will see if that jogs any memories hopefully :) I also came across a distressing piece of news that hopefully is not a link to the same Westlunds in Blackburn but I think it might be sadly. It's how I made the link to the ? brother in Pattaya. If you Google Marina Westlund January this year you can see what I mean. :(  anyway thank you all for all your efforts, very much appreciated  8)

I just noticed you have his DOB IN 1909. How did you find that? Was he not born in Norway? 😮

Ladyhawk is currently offline.

If I could answer for her, the date of birth for Karl Westlund would have been given by the informant to his death, alongside his place of birth. This info was included as standard on death registrations from 1969. You would need to order the actual death certificate to see the full details.

Fabulous Monica thank you.
I've been digging and not sure how I managed it but Rose might have married a man called Finnie. I have a feeling he died because there is no divorce. But then there is another marriage to Alexander Hosie. The year and place feels right so I could have cracked it I think.
I'll dig deeper  so thank you all again for your expert help.
You have always been so helpful, bless you all 😘

Can't see a Finnie death that would fit in the time frame but...I do think you have likely found her marriage with her surname mistranscribed or different spelling. Well done  ;)

If she had remarried, I believe her marriage entry would be indexed in both her maiden name and her previous married name. But would need to checked to confirm really unless you now find confirmation elsewhere with the info you have.

Added: Just found the death of the Rose Marie you think may be the entry for a second marriage. She is not connected. Have a look at her death on the index on SP and you will see her mother's maiden name is different.

So, the one to work with is the first marriage you found for now I suggest....until you find something different or confirmation that you are on the right track.

I am going to send you a message via the PM service. We need to be really aware that the events now are relatively recent and people may still be alive (or we have no confirmation that they are deceased).
