Title: Walter Oxley Bell b 1870 Clerkenwell Middx
Post by: BamptonHatherleigh on Thursday 18 February 21 18:30 GMT (UK)
You magicians helped me with some wonderful information on my GGrandfather Tom Bell who died in Kuruman in 1890... I still have lots of unanswered questions which I will probably never be able to answer. Such is the nature of the beast.
His son Walter Oxley tried to find some answers to his death in 1899 when he went there, presumably, also in the hope of finding some inheritance. It seems he then stayed in SA.  He fought in the Boer war, I have his discharge record from  2nd Brabants Horse.
I also have baptism records for children he had there, in Rondebosch,
Walter Tom b 14 Feb 1916. d1992
Jocelyn 13 April 1921
Ronald Oxley 6 Feb 1928
Hilda 1925
Charlotte 1923
From that I see his wife's name is Roseline Elizabeth but I cant find a maiden name .
Any chance anyone can find me Walter Oxley and Roselines marriage and deaths? any information on the family would be wonderful.
I also havent found any passenger lists for Walters journey(s) from UK to SA. TIA.

You can actually view the church register marriage certificate and the brief probate entry following his death.

:o How did you do that?! I spent all morning trying all variations and came up empty handed. Must try harder as the teachers always said. Thank you! I must be useless.. you came up with so many results I thought I will try for Henry Bell Dudley who was witness at Walter Tom's Baptism, the name piqued my curiosity.. zilch. what am doing wrong?!

Oh good -- I take it the 3ft long link worked!

I hope you viewed the actual images of the event records. They were a real bonus.

As you were after a marriage - I simply typed his name in the Records search screen - specified 'marriage' and entered his wife's first name in the 'spouse' field --- with a location of South Africa.
The other results just came up as well because they had his name recorded on them.

There are Henry Dudleys - and Henry Dudleys with an additional given name -- but I couldn't see any in South Africa for Henry Bell Dudley.

He may, of course, have omitted his middle name and I don't have any idea of dates to use. So sorry.

Oh thank you so much for the lovely message.

I am so pleased you found the other death - I hadn't looked for it - but that's a good thing. YOU found it!

I am no expert on Family Search - furthermore it has kept changing over the years.

However there are some real 'whizzes' on Rootschat about that site.

You could put a posting in the Common Room Forum entitled Family Search Tips (or similar) -- and ask if anyone can give you their tips on searching the site.

I must admit I am a basic user - all I do is;

1.Click 'Search' on the ribbon menu along the top of the home page.
2. Click 'Records' on the drop down menu which appears.
3. Enter the basic details including selecting the appropriate category from 'Search with a life event' which I am seeking - Birth, Marriage or one of the other categories.
4. Enter the location -- I use a county normally -- in this case I used South Africa as a Country.

However I am sure there will be lots more good tips from others more knowledgable than I am.

I hope you pick up some good ones! I'll look out for the topic in case you do raise it. (Every day is a school day!)
