Title: St Nicholas Within Church, Dublin
Post by: Runner55 on Friday 19 February 21 12:58 GMT (UK)
Dear RootsChatters

Some ancestors of mine have a documented history during the 1820s - 1840s of getting married and baptised at the Roman Catholic Church of St Nicholas (Within) in Dublin.

In the absence of any home addresses on these records that I have for my family members, does anyone know primarily which streets or districts are they are most likely to have lived in order for this to be their parish church and would those areas sit within the North or South of Dublin?

Is St Nicholas Church itself also considered to be in the North or South of Dublin?

Regards

St Nicholas within appears to be Church of Ireland
St Nicholas de Myra is Catholic

The Catholic and Church of Ireland St. Nicholas are both south Dublin, the Catholic one on Francis street, and the Church of Ireland was at Nicholas St. and close to Christchurch cathedral

The later baptism records include addresses, you can work out approximate coverage of the parish from these

Many thanks to all for the replies and links - some interesting stuff to look at there, particularly that the denomination was Church of Ireland - my baptism records stipulate Roman Catholic. Hmmm.

The 'within' or 'without' designation is not generally used for the Catholic St. Nicholas although some websites include this, it's more usually called St. Nicholas (of Myra) or just Francis Street church.

The church of Ireland St.Nicholas was originally dedicated to the same saint.

Hi,

In response to the note from dathai, the priests I have for the two baptism records are a 'Petro Ward Vicario' in 1821 and a 'Simone Bermingham' for the baptism in 1827.  (I'm presuming these are Latin versions of their names.)

In response to the note from athacliath62, I also have a very brief newspaper cutting from 1845 for the marriage of one of the above baptised children and it refers to the church they were married in as 'Francis Street Chapel', presided over by 'Rev Mr. O'Farrell'.

I'm presuming this indicates they were Catholics ...?

Thank you both for your replies.

Simon Bermingham is mentioned in a couple of articles in the Freeman's Journal in later years.
He seems to have been in trouble for marrying Catholics to Protestants, 'he being a Catholic priest'.

Hi, thanks Heywood for the link you sent me.  Looks very useful.

Hi and thanks also to Dublin1850. Very interesting point you make about the priest getting into trouble for marrying Catholics to Protestants.

It's actually made me re-think something I found in my research that could suggest an inter-faith marriage in my family during this period that I'd never considered before.

Hmmm ...... I shall be looking into this, as well as looking up references to Simon Bermingham in the Freeman's Journal on Irish Newspaper Archive.

Brilliant stuff!

Try the https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/ (https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/) too. They have a number of Irish papers.

The same man was in Francis Street early in his career.
