Title: Longman Barnes Templecoombe and Henstridge 1838 to 1843 Marriage and Baptisms
Post by: Llanfihangel on Saturday 20 February 21 07:22 GMT (UK)
Hi,

I am looking for a possible marriage between Sarah Longman and Thomas Barnes (Barns?) in Somerset around 1838. I have records of their children George b ~ 1840  and James b. ~ 1842 in Sherborn Dorsetshire and Charles b ~ 1843 in Henstridge Somerset (from an 1851 Census in Aberstruth Monmouthshire), but I can't find any records on FindMyPast, Ancestry, Family Search, Freereg, or the GRO of the marriage or baptisms. It is likeley possible that these events were recorded in a non-conformist chapel,

I did find the baptism record of Sarah Longman born 1823 to Samuel and Sarah Longman in a Chapel in Temple Coombe; his profession was Tallow Chandler.

I would be very grateful for any help in this!

Cheers,

Llanfi :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Not any help really but can only find Norahs 1859 birth reg mmn Longman.

I looked to see if Thomas may have married 2 Sarahs possibly with little luck.
Sarah is born Somerset on most census except 1871 where it says Rhymney, Monmouthshire

Ok, just found Matthew birth reg mmn Longman.

Cant see them in 1841 though under Barnes ::)

Thanks Trish1120 and Dundee!

I hope you and your families are well, and are keeping safe. We are Ok in Vancouver Canada, but the vaccination programme is only just getting going.

I have a death record for Sarah Barnes, widow of Thomas Barnes, at Aberstruth in 1889 that shows she was 66 years old at the time. This indicates was born in 1833, and that is consistent with the baptism record in Templecoombe as a daughter of Joseph and Sarah Longman.

They were terrible times in Somerset for ordinary folk in the early 1840's and even worse in the Welsh coal mines. Many had no alternative to move away from the country-side in the face of  starvation or the Workhouse.

Perhaps Thomas and Sarah were caught up in these troubles and they may have joined up on the way from Somerset to Aberstruth..  I can't ienvisage the journey!

Best regards,

Llanfi  :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Hello All,

Sarah Longman was baptised 1823 Templecoomb daughter of Joseph and Sarah Longman NOT IN 1833 as I stated in my last message..

And 1889 minus 66 = 1823 not 1833

(My eyes get crossed after a couple of hours)

Thanks

Hi Llanfi.

If you read what Dundee posted (which looks accurate to me) Sarah Longman married Robert Hunt 1840.
There are 3 Hunt children mothers maiden name Longman (they match 1851 census under Barnes)

Mary Ann Barnes is then born mmn Longman

From the marriage of Sarah to Robert Hunt her Fathers name was George.
And Dundee (Debra) has given you her bapt which matches Sarah Barnes census pob.

Hi Dundee,

Myself and Llanfihangel have been hunting down this Barnes line. I am descended from Charles Barns, son of Sarah Longman. The more I have been looking into it the more I believe that Charles was not a Barns but a Hunt. it looks like Sarah Longman may have married Robert Hunt, had sons George, James & Charles and then married Thomas Barns and had more children, the 1st being Mary Ann born 1847 in Monmouthshire.

You specify a lot of information from the Robert Hunt/Sarah Longman marriage certificate. Do you have a copy and if so would you be willing to share it with me?

I have ordered Charles Hunt's birth certificate and hope to have it by the end of the week.

Mike

Hello All!

Sarah Barnes widow of Thomas Barnes death record in Aberystruth shows she was 66 years old in 1889,

That indicates she was born in 1823, consistent with the date of birth of October 24 1823 when Sarah Longman daughter of Joseph and Sarah Longman was Christened in a Non-Conformist Chapel in Templecoombe (on 30 November 1823).

The Sarah Longman who married Robert Hunt at Sherborne in 1840 (Dundee) was of "full age" ,,. over 21 at that time. That is consistent with Dundee's later post of a Baptism in July1820... sho may  have just passed her 21 birthday in 1840!

Henstridge is a bit closer to Templecoombe (2 miles) than Rimpton (12 miles), but not by much!!

Cheers,

Llanfi :) :) :) :) :) :)
