Title: 49th Regiment of Foot
Post by: vmhp on Saturday 20 February 21 15:28 GMT (UK)
Regimental No 264 or 364, John Hoban who I believe to be my ancestor. Joined Liverpool 22nd Nov 1824 aged 21 born Mayo. He did 11 1/2 years East Indies so I presume he was back here 1835. He was a Sergeant then but courtmartialled at Hazaribagh and demoted for all of 6 days! He was discharged 26th April 1844 as unfit. My question is - where might he have spent the rest of his service? Some of this info came from Kew - my father went in 1990 and of course they are currently closed.

Army file on FindMyPast (it was transcribed as Bobin): https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2FWO97%2F0631%2F115%2F001&parentid=GBM%2FWO97%2F631%2F737645

and on Fold 3: https://www.fold3.com/image/590140964?xid=1022

He was in Chatham in 1841 according to the "British Army worldwide index"

Thanks for that. I have the fold 3 record from my father's visit to Kew where he also made notes re his discharge. I don't belong to Find My Past so will hang in here for the time. I really need to know if he could have fathered my Ggrandfather in 1837 in Ireland. As he was not discharged until 1844 he would have to have been serving there or closeby. I picked up the Chatham record too and he could have been to and fro!

The 49th Regiment went to India in 1828 and remained in the East (India and China) for 15 years. This man only did 11.5 years in India so presumably was shipped back to UK after the chronic nature of his illness became apparent. The file shows that he became ill in 1839 so presumably he returned to UK in 1840.

Well if they did not go to India until 1828 then I am out of luck!  I did not know that there was a report on his illness before 23rd April 1844 - the one my Dad found.  What record was the report on?
Interestingly I found him on several family trees on Anc with kids born while he must have been in India. I suppose I will never find out more. I really wanted to find siblings of my Ggf. He died young as the result of poor treatment for injuries (actually he died of typhoid in Mercers Hosp in Dublin!) recieved in the course of duty in the Lancs Police Force. His widow with 4 young boys had to go home to her parents in a different part of Ireland so no Hoban contacts from his generation. Thanks.

The third image in his army file is a medical report detailing his illness, its cause and when/where it first became apparent.

Probably.  I assume it is the same file as the one on FindMyPast.
