"David died in September 1861 in Edinburgh ."
From the death certificate...what is the cause of death?.....where did he die?....who is the informant?
Might be a clue to where he was earlier in the year.

Thank you both for your replies David was aged 83 died of old age at 157 Causewayside which
is in the Newington registration of Edinburgh.
His son William registered his death in September 1861
He was the widower of Christian Anderson she died in 1851

Have you located his children in the 1861 Census?
His family name might have been transcribed incorrectly. He is a widower.......is he living with a married daughter?

Is it likely he was a Proprietor (you don't give an occ. for him) & could this be him recorded with wrong name, maybe under Mitchell on 1861 census too :-\

Not finding anything on VRs, looks as though he may have been a Lodger in another household.
Did his DC give another address as 'Usual Residence' & was William 'present' at death?
I couldn't find son Francis on the VRs either although there's a few William MacGill to choose from.

It just gives his address no other there was no medical attendant cause of death old age and William his son registered his death.
Francis on1861 census is living in Middleton's Entry Edinburgh,
I have checked my records for 1861 census and David is not with any of his family .
Thank you
Jessie
