Title: James DAVIES - Death, Liverpool
Post by: Melbell on Wednesday 17 March 21 18:40 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help me find the death of one James DAVIES in Liverpool please?

He was born in c.1805/6 (approx. age 35 on 1841 Census)

1826 married Catherine DERBYSHIRE; three surviving children, Ellen, James & Catherine.
Their youngest child Catherine was b. JQ 1839.

James’s widow Catherine was listed in the 1851 Census. Therefore he died on/before 31 March 1851.

I can find only one registered Death within the correct time-frame, and that is the ‘wrong’ address.

I’d be very grateful for some for help with this long !!! standing problem. Thank you.

Melbell

James is on the 1841 census with Catherine and their children so we know he is alive then
Looking at FreeBMD and using the dates March  1/4 1841 to March 1/4 1851 I can see 22 death registrations for James Davies Liverpool registration district, then there  is a few with surname Davis and one or two with middle names. How did you whittle it down to one particular death reg?
Another thing to consider is that he died whilst away from home and not in Liverpool reg dist.

Is this the burial record you have from  Lancs OPC but address not Eccles street however the age is good.
Burial: 11 Aug 1850 St John, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
James Davies -
Age: 44 years
Abode: Edgar St
Buried by: R. W. Wolseley, Curate
Register: Burials 1849 - 1852, Page 479, Entry 3825
Source: LDS Film 93826

The 1841 census has them living ? Court? off Eccles Street in the parish of St Martin, West Derby  with their surname as Davis and in 1851 Catherine son James and daughter Catherine are in Eccles St itself, 1861 Catherine and James still in Eccles Street so didn't move very far at all.

Thanks for replying to my post, crisane and garstonite.

I have been working on this family for years, with varying success. But I really need to find the death/ burial of James in order move on.

James described as a Carter on his Marriage entry, but hereafter as 'coal heaver', e.g. on his daughter's marriage cert., & on his wife's death cert. 1861 Census lists Catherine his widow, 'Cart Owner' and son James as 'Carter'.

By the way, Ellen's baptism was 24 January 1832.  Thanks for helping me.

Can you give us the details of the death registration you have discounted? Do you have the actual death certificate?

It's the same one as quoted above, Edgar Street. Why would James die there? Could you please tell me if you think that died in the workhouse?

1841 Census is Gorley Court, off Eccles Street. I think the surname is Davies rather than Davis  :-\.  I have tried to discover the burial, I worried about missing out various different Liverpool graveyards etc.

Hi,

I wondered if when Catherine died, she might have been buried with her husband James.

However I have found the death/burial of Catherine Davies - Eccles Street, on 6 Nov 1864 (number 1404) at Walton Park, Liverpool  age 58 and regrettably there doesn't appear to be any sign of James there.

The James Davies who died in 1845 aged 38 is buried at the Necropolis (Low Hill) cemetery on 22 June 1845. He was 38, last residence Marybone and cause of death given as decline.

Hi,

Looking at historical old Liverpool maps, Eccles Street was off Vauxhall Road. About 12 streets away at a major junction of Vauxhall Road/Tithebarn Street/Great Crosshall Street was Marybone.

It seems to be the nearest possibility to investigate further?

Maybe purchase this death certificate to see if it is your man?
