Title: Diary > Saturday 20th March
Post by: Roobarb on Saturday 20 March 21 23:35 GMT (UK)
It was V day for me. Went for a walk in the morning, wasn't sure what to wear as temperatures up to 16° were forecast but it had been quite cool earlier. Was a bit too warm in the jacket I chose. Was feeling a bit edgy, not worried about the vaccination or the vaccine itself but just wanted to get it over with.

Drove down to the surgery, parked opposite and was surprised at how many people were going in as the receptionist had told me that mine was the last appointment. Waited till the appointment time and went in, the procedure was the same as for the flu jab, in the front door and out the back. No sign of any other patients, was back in the car four minutes after going in. . Had the Astra Zeneca vaccine, I could feel it going down my arm as it was injected, a really strange feeling. Back home for lunch.

A friend came to take down a large shelf in the garage that I wanted rid of, before he arrived I took out all the things that were on and around there, the patio was full of stuff and part of the lawn too, swept out the dirt. Didn't take long to remove the shelf. After that I put all the everything back, rearranged some things, will do more  another day and maybe get rid of some. It was all quite strenuous. Hot in the sunshine in the garden.
If I'm feeling tired on Sunday I won't know if it was a side effect of the vaccine or all the physical work I did. We shall see.

Oh blimy forgot to wish you luck for today’s vaccination.... glad to hear it all went well and certainly a speedy process!
Perhaps a rest tomorrow just in case you have side effects might be in order... the garage sorting can always wait for another day! Lovey to have such warm temps!

Woke early today with I think the bins next door being clattered... just after 7am! Went back to sleep but never very successful so read before getting up...
A brighter day...
OH had his now usual Saturday morning zoom with his golfing buddies... they’re all looking forward to getting back on the course...
Once he’d finished he went out in the garden to start on the third post hole...
I had to wait for my Waitrose delivery and once that came I went out too...
‘ the third one will be easy as no shrubs to move first’ was the comment before he went out...
Wrong!
This one had two major tree roots from next doors yew tree which is right up against the wire fencing and about 30-40ft high... so it took some time for OH to saw through them... won’t be at all worried if it kills the tree as his son said (last year!) he was planning to get rid of it anyway... we stopped for a cuppa as it was hard work... I managed to get all loose soil out and bagged up...
once we’d filled all the bags we had a late lunch and watched the rugby...
OH went to the skip late afternoon as it’s usually quiet then and I got dinner prepared...
I was making a Thai green curry and fortunately all the items I’d asked for in my shopping were available... I make the paste from fresh ingredients as they’re easy to do and taste great...
Once that was all ready I had a shower, hair wash and then we watched England v Ireland... what a terrible game... time for England to have a new coach I think.. Eddie Jones is passed his sell by date I feel...
Once the game was over I went and cooked the curry... we had a Thai salad made from cucumbers, pepper, shredded spring onions, grated carrot and roasted cashews  over it I poured the dressing made from red chillis, soy sauce, rice vinegar garlic, ginger ... pretty hot but compliments the curry as it’s crunchy and fresh tasting...
After dinner we watched France v Wales... good match pity Wales got pipped at the post in the last minutes....
Had a message from J who broke her shoulder to say she’d had to go to hospital yesterday and today with what started off as a stitch pain in her back progressing to something more alarming... now on meds for blood clots and inflammation of fluid around her lung... getting out of breath easily when talking becoming very painful...sounds horrendous poor thing....
Retired to bed early is has quite tired!
Good to be outside being productive and weather was pleasant up to about 14C...

Hope others are feeling more uplifted with better weather too!

Caroline

Oooo Roobarb, I forgot about your vaccination too. Glad it was quick and you felt safe whilst in the surgery. Please keep us up to date with how you are feeling. I’m very interested in how everyone there gets on with it before our turn comes around.  :)

Caroline, what horrible news for your friend - it sounds dreadful, and quite worrying.

I am enjoying reading about your fencing adventures.  :)

Your green curry and salad sounds lovely. I haven’t made this in a while, but Thai beef salad is very good for the summer months. I like to add some of the Thai herbs but they are hard to buy even though I live in an area with lots of Chinese/Aisian supermarkets. I have a lemongrass plant, and a kaffir lime tree, neither of which perform very well, but it is the ingredients like Thai basil which I think makes the dish, which are difficult to find. Perhaps not the right season.

Humid and sunny weather here. The odd slight drizzle. Nothing of interest happened.

No worries ladies, I didn't expect you to remember my vaccination date. Am feeling fine this morning, awake rather early for me, in fact I laid there for quite a while thinking I can't get up yet! Cuppa in hand now and back in situ for the moment! The arm where I was injected feels a little bit heavy but not sore, so...... to rest or not to rest later? We'll see.  :D

Caroline, I'm not surprised you were tired after all that activity. The tree roots must have been massive, not the sort of tree you'd expect in a garden, more usual in a churchyard. Hope you don't encounter any more major obstacles.
Your poor friend, hope she soon improves. Your culinary adventures sound amazing, your OH is very lucky to be treated to these restaurant quality meals as a reward for his hard work.

Ruskie, I'll let you know if I experience any other effects today. Hope it's not too long before you get your vaccination, I'm sure it will be reassuring for you.

Good to know your vac was swift and easy Roobarb.... as you have got thus far without ill effects, I will be surprised if you develop any now..... fingers crossed.

Fencing adventures... (great way of putting it Ruskie.....) definitely a good way to keep busy evidently.
Dreadful news about your friend J, Caroline, thank heavens she got rapid attention.
Wonderful you make fresh pasta!!

The epic rain and flooding in Oz sounds awful.

Took a lovely walk around the hilly estate nearby in Paignton, lots of flowers and blossoming trees/shrubs to admire.  One house we passed I commented on the mass of berries on a laurel. Good job I wasn't rude as the lady popped up from behind her wall to see who was speaking, :P  so we had a little chat.
Rugby for the rest of the day, while I read an entire book.
I did happen to catch the barn raising from 7 Brides, between matches, which alleviated the pain a little.

(Paula Hawkins: "Into the water". I can't say I found it entertaining or uplifting.  Only finished it because I needed to know who dunnit and why.)

I thought Into the Water was dreadful too MH, I finished it for the same reasons. Your walk around Paignton sounds lovely.

I didn't like to be quite SO disparaging Roobarb, but truthfully you are not wrong. :D

I can recommend "Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine".

Glad you are feeling well Roobarb. It wasn’t that long ago you booked your appointment - your V day seems to have come around very quickly.  ;)

Thanks Ruskie, I'm feeling more positive about things already.  :)

It must be the Northerner in me coming out MH, the tendency to call a spade a b****y shovel! I've read Eleanor Oliphant, absolutely loved it, I keep looking out for the author's next book.

Yes Roobarb, my daughter has just had the Astro Zeneca one and has been quite ill for three days.
She does however have  Pernicious   Anaemia too so that could be a factor.
Glad you are feeling better.

Well Flash Harry’s Mum in hospital ,chest pains ,but heart attack ruled out so a mystery.
It wil get sorted I am sure .

You have all been busy again, nice weather  here so I too have done a modest amount .
Neighbour over the lane asked if I would like some celeriac and apple soup .
I said I would certainly like to try it ,never had it before .
He is a Chef but not working at the moment,I remember him as a little boy at the school where I worked ,close by , and his wife too.
It was delicious and I must let him know.

Dullish this morning but looks to brighten up .
Got washing in so it will dry nicely .
Time was when I would not have put washing out on a Sunday !

New tablets arrived ,but it says in the blurb not to take them if you are under 60 Kg ,well at home undressed I am 58 ,but at the hospital only 56 dressed!
Either way - not supposed to take them.

Chicken breasts to cook ,one for tea ,one for freezer
.De stalked a huge bag of spinach yesterday, it will cook down to nothing .
Was going to blanch  and freeze half but on the pack it says not to reheat ,
well blanching is about two minutes but does that count?
I will be green with big muscles if I eat it all today.

Reading through some back numbers of the “ History “ magazine, someone had sent a letter asking who would we least like to be in lockdown with ?
Not neccesarily alive today.
There have been/ are many I could put on my list so I must think about it.

Look after yourselves .
Viktoria.
PS , I have hundreds of posts on my iPad from RootsChat and try as I might can’t get rid of them.
Is it possible ?

Viktoria
Sorry to hear your daughter has been so poorly after her vaccine and also sorry to hear about Flash Harry’s mother. It must all be very worrying. And the worry about your tablets.

The soup sounds delicious. I like soup and used to make a lot. Last year whilst shielding, well I’m still shielded this year, my food processor died. In the couple of months I was allowed out I got a new one. Unlike my old one that you could use left or right handed, this one is set up for right handed people so I have to turn it around and be a bit of a contortionist! Soup making has sadly declined!

I realise you probably want fresh spinach but I discovered that Iceland does bags of blocks of frozen spinach. It tastes fine. I’m sure your spinach would be OK frozen.

My day
Can’t think I did anything much yesterday worth writing about on here! It was a very dull day with mizzling rain. I did go a short walk and had a takeaway coffee! Roll on the 1st April!

;D "It must be the Northerner in me coming out MH, the tendency to call a spade a b****y shovel!"

That was one of my mother's favourite observations..... perhaps she learned it in Scotland, as I am not aware she ever visited the Frozen North of England.

Sorry about FH's Mum Viktoria, hope she is fully recovered again... so worrying!
Also, rotten your daughter being so poorly with the vaccine.... (I suffered quite enough that first night,) I do wonder what it hinges upon... why some people are really rough with it, and others not troubled at all.

Thanks, my daughter phones me every Monday without fail ,we are on the phone for hours!I get all the news.

I will know more then .
I’ll not bother her now.
The soup was very nice .
I think I will chop the spinach very small and flash it in the pan with butter and nutmeg .
I used to buy frozen spinach in Belgium ,a block already very finely chopped -,two minutes and done .

A woman passed along the lane today, she and I exchange pleasantries .
Today she said “ I think I am supposed to do a census or something today”.
I asked had she got a form,”No” ,well I told her ,it would have to be done online then, she was not sure if they owned a computer or not ——
I said if she phoned today at least it would perhaps be recorded she had applied for a form, but in any case we all had letters some weeks ago telling us we needed to fill in the census either online or request a form and do it that way.
She had no knowledge of any letter.
But she got upset a few weeks back saying how difficult her husband was being .
A garbled story ,so perhaps some dementia as she is in her seventies yet said they had only been married a few months!
She is lovely ,anyway I gave her the phone number.
My form came yesterday, but I was worried that more than a week had elapsed and it had not come so capitulated and did the #&£&##&& thing online!

Curried chicken and rice for tea, and a chicken and leek casserole for later in the week,or the freezer.
Just thought , Might do eggs Florentine tomorrow with the flipping spinach!

Washing back in and airing on the maiden / clothes horse .
Smells of fresh air.

Number two son phoned ,they had been to the  a white Horse at Uffington.
He forgot we had been years ago.
It seems there are thoughts it is not a horse but a sabre toothed tiger.

Well, Thankyou all again ,it is a worry , Flash Harry’s Mum is lovely, she has done a good job with him.
Take care everyone ,hasn’t the diary been a godsend!
We should send Roobarb a prize ,any suggestions,.
The dafter the better.
I will look out for something that can see round corners so her nasty neighbour cannot catch Roobarb unawares !

Thanks for your good wishes Viktoria, I haven't actually been feeling unwell, my comment about feeling more positive was just on a general basis of looking towards the future. I'm very sorry to hear that your daughter has been so poorly, hope she's soon feeling better. Hope the hospital soon solves the mystery of FH's mum's pains.

Gibel, I had no idea that food processors were set up that way, what a shame it's made things so difficult for you. Hope your weather has been better today.

Maybe just didn't admit to it.  :) ;D

Pleased to hear you think I should have a prize Viktoria, although I'm not sure why!  ;D
NN was lurking around yesterday when my friend was sorting out stuff in my garage, she was watering some plants in the front garden with a watering can, the soil is already absolutely sopping! Obviously desperate to see and hear what was going on!

Mentioning  food  processors  , I  had  a  K******  one for years, 2  years ago  I  bought  myself a  different make, have  used  it twice, it sounds like concorde and in fact  I am  frightened of the  thing,  I  think  I  should  have  returned it  and complained

Good to hear Roobarb that you’ve not felt any side effects....

Viktoria- very sorry to hear about FH’s mum do hope they’re able to get to the bottom of what went wrong...
Also your daughter hope she’s feeling better after her experience with the jab..

Gibel - I had no idea that electric gadgets were so difficult to use when you’re left handed! Well done for persevering though!

Ruskie - a friend gave me a lemon grass plant and I left it in the ground for too long and it died 😢I’ve not dared tell her though as I should have done what she said and I didn’t! When we were in Singapore I had fresh lemon grass in water as a drink it was devine... supermarket ones although fresh not quite the same!

MH and Roobarb- I’ve read Eleanor Oliphant too and enjoyed it... shan’t bother with the other one as neither of you seemed to enjoy it!

Well,folks a mystery,
My household code in the letter informing me I must fill in the Census for  my  household ,the code was one thing.
As the paper one had not come  by the time the post usually arrives on Saturday I did do it online .The letter came later, well lunchtime that morning .
The code for my household is totally different  in the paper one.——?
I really feel like being a devil and sending the paper one as well!
There may be a logical explanation ,but if I get sent to prison for anything to do with this will you all stick up for me and say I have been exhibiting signs of madness for a good while?  ;D
Viktoria.
Caroline, I killed a Spider plant my friend in Wales sent me.
I bought another so I could photograph it and let her know I had looked after it!
That too died,I mean it takes a lot to kill a spider plant but I managed it .Twice!
I must get another though.
It was she who sent the Rudbeckia which is six feet high when fully grown in the summer. The stems are tough and as good as canes ,so I save them.
Life is not fair, there was a spider plant in a house window for years,it was never watered I am sure and I passed the house when I went shopping .
I bet I watered mine too much.
Ah well, get another asap and send a photograph.
My friend’s us down to the floor almost in her conservatory.
Viktoria.

Letter this morningNHS, so in my diving suit ,with the goldfish bowl on my head, big wellies and rubber gloves I did not give it the usual quarantine period ,thinking it would be re the phone call instead of appointment with Cardiologist .However a letter telling me to get in touch for my second Covid vaccination

So I can book it on the phone betweem 2&4 this afternoon for Week staring March 29 th.
Everything wiped down.
So just having a cuppa.

Saw the lady whom I spoke with on Sunday re Census, she was with her sister, I just said “ did you get the census sorted .?”
Her sister said the husband had done it - with a big surreptitious wink.
So yes, perhaps a little bit of dementia .

My predictive text is a nuisance but often funny ,today emailed my daughter
re second jab and said I was looking forward ,when safe to go, to visiting - now I typed in Bury market, BUT, it came up as Urdu market,
Now there are many people from India etc who have stalls ,they are so cheerful and joking, but to assume they only speak Urdu when many Bangladeshi and  Pakistani speaking also have stalls is a diabolical Liberty!
Oh the stalls where the
Shalwar Chemise and Saris are sold are like rainbows.
I have a Sari ,and a little blouse that is worn with them.
OH brought it back from one of his trips to India in the 196o’s.
I have only worn it once, was scared it would fall down as no fastenings just folds and tucking in .
Red,shot with green and heavy gold embroidery along the hem and front panel.Blouse green shot with red, wild silk but sari silk but not wild silk.

My grand daughter looks spectacular in it ,borrowed it for a college do .
She asked about the red dot ladies have on their forehead ,but I explained as it was a religious symbol it would be wrong to use it as part of a fancy dress costume etc.,so she didn’t put one on.
I rather looked like a bundle of exotic  washing I imagine .
I have no photograph ,perhaps as well  ::)

Well bed stripped and so window wide open, washing in and hope it stays dry to put it on the line
So remake bed when the room is all fresh and aired , quick dust and vac .
Windows and paintwork done already so that is that!.
Other curtains  taken down all washed and dry already so can be put away .

Hope everyone is well, look after yourselves.
Cheerio. Viktoria.

:D  I'm loving that mental image Viktoria.... I wonder if we have any cartoonists who could capture it??

Your sari sounds marvellous too...  I used to love walking along the road where there were so many sari shops in Leicester in the middle 70s (was it Groby Road?).
When I was in India I found them mesmerising too.

No one in my road seemed to have a lit candle on their steps ,to remember all those lost to Covid 19.
Got a gardening catalogue and Captain Sir Tom’s deep red rose is available   .
Heavily scented. £14-99 but £2-99 goes to his fund .
Going to get one .

What a fandangle !
Nothing was accepted when I tried to get through by phone ,email or internet
so contacted my Health Centre ,they phoned,I got confirmation by email but there was supposed to be a number which I must present when I go for my second vaccination .
I will have to contact the Health Centre again.
They don’t make it easy for nerds like me!
Just how could an old lady - like me- get through to make a booking and get that number ,it is so complicated ,imagine the lady who was bothered about the Census!
I am fed up with technology !
Says she who uses RootsChat now  and  again!  ::)

A young woman from across the lane cane this evening
She is a Nurse but is back at Uni doing her Midwifery.
I knew her husband too as a schoolboy .
She left a box with two sorts of cream puffs and a Manchester tart.
( like me!  ;D ;D ;D)
Seemingly there is a food bank ,at Uni ,these cakes are outdated tomorrow , so were shared out this evening .
She does not normally use the food bank but the short  date meant it was share out or throw away .
I need sugar like a hole in my head!however a kind thought so accepted gratefully .
For those who are not familiar with Manchester tart,a sweet flan pastry,Raspberry jam, very thick creamy custard ,that cuts ,coconut sprinkled and a cherry on the top!
School dinners.

Well off for a bath as all the bedding is clean on .

Horse is doing well ,some more tests done  and  new medication ,now needs
“some more muscle on his top line”no idea what  that means but he needs it.
Not sure about the neck  problem , but is lying down  now, for short periods.
So things are getting better.
There are two horses in the next field ,he spends a lot of time galloping up and down with them on one side of the fence and he on the other !
Lots of person contacts too, which he loves , especially  Flash  Harry.
Ah well, goodnight folks .
Take care.
Viktoria.

VIKTORIA - the number might be either your NHS number, which I needed to provide, or possibly, the batch number of the first vaccine given, which should be on the card they gave you.

Glad the horse is doing well.

The Manchester Tart sounds divine, but I know what you mean about sugar!! :'(
I only fantasise these days.

Thanks Mowsie, just got through to my GP’s receptionist and she said it is not really needed !
So all OK.
The print is so small and my glasses not now the right prescription but as my sight is changing all the time as I put this drop or that drop  in I think it no sense to have an eye test yet.
Again another instance of people assuming everyone can cope with computers
