Title: Help with deciphering Mother's maiden name
Post by: manukarik on Tuesday 23 March 21 15:05 GMT (UK)
I'm scratching my head trying to work out Jacques Gounon's mother's name on this acte de mariage. Can anyone help me to decipher it? It's Marie ? I don't think the first letter is an S. Is it an O or a D perhaps?

Here's the link to the original, for reference (page on the right):

Many thanks!

I hesitate to differ from Bookbox but - Dibaud without a dotted 'i'....

Thank you Bookbox, Josey and Treetotal, I appreciate you having a go! Debaud and Dibaud are both French surnames. Still struggling to match either of those names to Jacques Gounon. Oibaud is also a French surname, but again struggling to find a likely candidate.

I don't think 'O' would have the stroke that this first letter has at left hand side.

I'll carry on looking for Marie DEBAUD. There were certainly Debauds in the Département.

I looked at the original page before scrolling down to see other people's interpretations. For what it's worth, I saw Debord. The handwriting is quite twirly. (I say this as someone whose own hand often conveys a vague impression of the intended letter, rather than its generally accepted shape.)

More seriously, if the word before it is 'Marie' then its third letter is surely exactly the same as the fifth one in the surname.

Rattus - thank you! You're right about the r of Marie and the 5th letter of the second name. I hadn't clicked!

It's frustrating, but I'm stubborn. I'm determined to track Marie down. Might just have to have a wee break and go back to my hunt with fresh eyes.

Thank you so much, everybody!

It was the ar in Marie that convinced me.

Thanks Gadget! You've solved the mystery! I tried using Joker characters (and her husband's name) in my searches but came up with nothing. Thanks to you, I've now got a potential date and place for the marriage of Jacques and Marie (from Geneanet) to track down and attempt to verify from the Parish Registers.

Another step closer .... You've certainly got an eye for this! I'm very grateful.

Pooling all the ideas and comments here, I think Debard might need to be considered, too.  :)

Edit: Sorry! Only saw the first page.  ;D Agree with Gadget.  8)
