Post by: VICTORIA on Tuesday 23 March 21 16:07 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help please I have record of James Jones father of Mary Margaret Jones who married Peter McClelland 02/08/1849. The occupation of James was Joiner. Mary Margaret Jones was born abt 1830 Liverpool Do not know name of her mother. I searched 1841 Census. No luck. The only record I found was 1851 Census it says James Jones but the image looks like John Jones occupation Joiner. Any help appreciated. 1851 Islington Piece 2184 Folio 154Page 2

A possible marriage....

2 Nov 1823, St Peter Church Street Liverpool, James Jones, joiner, of Liverpool, married (by banns) Anne Jones, spinster, of the same parish, both signed, witnessed by Robert Johnson and Edward Griffiths.

Also...1851 Pleasant Place Manchester (Manchester...not Liverpool?)
James Jones, 49, joiner, b. Ireland
Mary Jones, 34, wife, b. Ireland
Roseanna Jones, 16, silk weaver, b. Manchester
Catherine Jones, 14, power loom weaver, b. Manchester
James Jones, 11, scholar, b. Manchester
John Jones, 0, b. Manchester (given the ages and gap between James and John it is possible that Mary is James second wife).

Another possibility in 1841, Bean Lane Liverpool...
James Jones, 45, joiner, nbic
Alice Jones, 45, nbic
James Jones, 20, brass Moulder, nbic
Robert Jones, 15, app joiner, bic
William Jones, 15, app joiner, bic

No Mary with them, but there are plenty of options for a Mary Jones born circa 1830 in 1841 census records on her own as either a servant, with a widowed mother or a pupil...

There is a Mary Ann baptised to James (a wheelwright) and Charlotte, 3 Jan 1830 at Horwich.
A Mary baptised to James (a sawyer) and Mary (late Jones) 14 Aug 1829 at Manchester
A Mary baptised to James (a carver & gilder) and Rachel, 2 Oct 1826, at Liverpool
Another Mary Ann baptised to James and Ann, (a labourer though) 19 Jun 1835 at Liverpool
A Mary baptised to James and Jane (another labourer) 25 Dec 1832 Liverpool
A Mary baptised to James and Ellen (another labourer) 10 Jan 1833 Toxeth
A Mary baptised to James and Mary (another labourer) 18 Jul 1830 Liverpool

Is Mary Margaret consistent with her age and place of birth on all census records?

Jo  :)

Hi Jo, thanks for your help. The only record I have that gives her age is 1851 census with husband Peter McClellan Peter was 22 Mary was 21 They married 1849 The baptism record you found that looks promising is Mary to James and Rachel 02/10/1826 Liverpool. Carver & Gilder ? involved with wood ? then maybe connection with joinery.

Hi Victoria,

A wheelwright is a also a carpenter, and a sawyer also works with wood... :)

If it's any help, Mary's address on her marriage appears to be Holtam St (or similar) - not the same as her groom's, unlike many certificates.

Witnesses James Lowe and Ann Wignall

Hi Victoria,

When I look at the 1851 census it shows Mary M McClellan as born in WarrenPoint, Ireland, as well as daughter Margaret (edited) aged 1?

Jo  ???

I agree - 1851 census definitely says she was born Warrenpoint, Ireland (is in County Down) not in Liverpool.

What happened to family after 1851?    Can't find any of them after then.

I would guess as born in Ireland Mary Margaret Jones probably came to Liverpool to work after 1841 and her family probably still there.

Quite likely the family (or what remained of it) immigrated to England in the wake of the irish famine in the 1840s

If Mary Margaret Jones was born in Ireland so was her father James Jones and that is why he can not be found in Liverpool. :'( :'(
