Title: Waterside, Derwenthaugh, County Durham
Post by: Tickettyboo on Tuesday 30 March 21 11:01 BST (UK)
I am 'very' unsure if I have used the correct (for restorers) way to re-size/ compress this photo. The file info for original scan was 5659x 3420 pixels and weighed in at a whopping 6.8MB.
I love it. This area was heavily industrialised (see the huge chimneys in the background) but this really showed me an oasis of beauty within. I was told by the contact who kindly sent it to me that it had been 'hand coloured' by the photographer.

Using my usual, unskilled, method of press buttons to see what happens, the attached version is 2122 x 1282 and the file size is 482kb (to conform to the max file size for posting). If its unsuitable for a clean up, then please don't waste any time.

If it 'is' suitable to give it a clean  then I would really appreciate it.

Thanks
Boo

Oh John - you made the sun come out and brightened everything up :-)
<if you can replicate that in real life, you'd be very welcome round here! >

Thank you, I do love this photo and its even better when its not so grubby.

She (and the neighbours) certainly did japeflakes. Hope the men didn't row to and from the pub. Going would be ok but getting back in the house after a few pints could have been eventful - that ladder doesn't look like it would pass a safety inspection :-)

Thank you, they are both lovely - the black and white one is really interesting, I suppose that's how most photos were at the time and I like old b/w photos but hadn't thought about how it would have looked if it wasn't coloured.

I couldn't get it under the 500kb without making it smaller and compressing abit.

A  lovely scene. I've just done a gentle clean.

Add -seen a couple of marks that I missed so here's a new one!

Thank you tomkin :-) - for both this one and the smaller one.

It is a lovely pic, I have had real pleasure from it for many years now. Photos of people are brilliant but this one in their 'backyard' rather than a studio tells me so much more.

All of them are super, thank you for those, Gadget.

This branch of my tree lived there (or the very nearby area) for generations. Many were watermen or keelmen on the Tyne. I've sat and looked at this over the years and imagined them going down that ladder, and rowing down the Derwent to the Tyne to go to work :-)

Have you been to Dunston Staiths, Boo?  We used to go there quite often before this dread plague. Also, Watergate Forest Park is not all that far away.

If you let me know roughly where your pic was taken, I'll try to get over and grab some modern pics when we're allowed out!

PS - Tomkin might even have some old slides of here from when he used to roam. He's been to Tynemouth  :D

PPS - I see that I can drive down the A694 and look across to see if I recognise any buildings across the River Derwent

I remember the staithes still being being used Gadget (think they finally stopped in the 1970s? but that would be about the time I left home)
I think I may have Waterside marked on an old map - somewhere . . . I'll see if I can dig it out later.

Well, who'd a thunk it ? ! Tomkin must belong on Boo's tree if he took this photo (great job on the hand colouring).

You must be my GG Granda Tom :-)

ok so what I really need to know ASAP is when did your Lizzie's first husband die and was she ever 'officially' married to William Hails who used to be her boarder and then she claimed she was wed to him, but I think she was fibbing.

< the claim for back pocket money, missed birthdays etc will follow when I have finished adding it all up>

He'll have some excuse, Boo. He always does. Bless his little cotton socks

I wanted to see how it would look 'antiqued' , Here's a little one rowing down to the Metro Centre
 :)

Apologies Gadget, I meant to come back and answer your question about where exactly Waterside was.
Short answer is not 'quite' where I thought :-)

So I was correct when I said:

 :)

It looks like it's now handy for that big Swedish chain  :)

When I go that way, I'll see if I can identify the site and take some pics.  I need some shelving.
