Title: Trying to identify Music Hall songs that Mother would sing when in a good mood!
Post by: markheal on Tuesday 30 March 21 19:39 BST (UK)

Family discussion came up with this:
"As far as music hall songs go - I remember mother saying that her father wrote various music hall songs under a pseudonym, one of which was about a man who (for a bet?) went from some place A to B without going down any street - but by using routes called roads, avenues, crescents, lanes and paths."
Does this ring any bells?

I have started to explore the well-known songs but I expect that Grandfather's songs did not hit the popular bigtime!

From this list, I can certainly recall 24 songs all of which I
associate with Mother's singing.

Grandfather was a journalist type who enjoyed walking the London streets rather than taking the omnibus.  He wrote for several Catholic newspapers and publications and of course earnt very little money!

There was a George Elliot who sang Music Hall songs in the theatres of the late 1800’s early 1900’s .
He wore dark make up and a cream suit , the words that he  used to describe himself are not used today, so Google it.
One song in particular was” Lily of Laguna”.
Hope this is a bit of help.
There is another thread / topic running re old music hall songs which might be helpful.
“ Re old 78 sleeve”

We used to call my grandfather grandad Felix after a music hall song that he liked .

It was about a man walking but I only know a jumble of  the chorus lines..

Felix kept on walking
You can always find himwith his hands behind him ...blow him up with dynamite he keeps on walking still .

That brought up good memories ☺️ I'm humming it to myself to see if I can remember any other lines .

Good luck in your search

Actually Felix was a cat, an early cartoon character.
Google it to see what he was like.

I am so interested that these popular tunes are so enduring in our memories.
I believe that for people with severe Alzheimer's condition, the capacity to recall tunes remains intact.
