Title: Mary Dykes Death
Post by: JoyceMH on Sunday 04 April 21 01:41 BST (UK)
I have done extensive research on my gggrandmothers life in
Australia after she arrived as an irish oprphan on the New Liverpool
ship 1849. She married a convict John Dykes, had 6 children , the last
one in 1864, just after her husband died the year before.
I would love to know what happened to Mary Dykes (nee Kelly) but
after that the trail goes cold. Iv tried looking for death certificates in
Victoria records etc. Is there any other option i can explore to find some
answers? Many Thanks J

Can you please identify the 6 births that you see to this couple....in Victoria.

Which of the children where alive when father John died?

Do you have a marriage certificate for one of these children to see how mother is named with possibly the description...... "deceased"

If Mary did not marry again you might expect that the children would go into care.

Good point, yes i wondered if they had gone into care.
I have seen a marriage cert for Mary Anne Dykes ( my
ggrandmother) and no mention of her mother being
deceased. Joseph John died 1864, year after his father
died aged 3. Andrew James 1864 -1904 havent found
any documents for them.

J...

When Jessie died in Hamilton in 1869, whoever gave the info on her/his DC thought her/his mother was Catherine!!!  Maybe an indication that Mary was deceased for a time, maybe not.  Maybe worth taking a look at if you haven't already.

Marriage certificate for Mary Ann DYKES - does it describe father as being deceased.

Can you list all the information on this document. It might lead to whoever brought her up.

There is a Mary Dykes , age 81, who died in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1913. That would be a birth around 1832 that would fit.
Is it possible she moved to NZ to be with her daughter’s family, who were in Waikaia (not far from Dunedin).

Yes  we found that one to. Mary came on the Earl Grey Scheme from Dublin. Elizabeth arrived with her mother who was a convict from Ireland. I believe they probably did find each other again.
Most interested to know if theres anymore documentation about the abandoned children courtcase.

Is this your Mary Ann DYKES?

The Argus 19 Nov 1874 p6
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5882912?
Matilda NOLAN (now WILSON), 320 acres, Terrick Terrick.—It was proved that there was no residence, and no improvement on the land when last visited. The allegation was that this woman, who was formerly his servant, was a dummy for Mr. BOUCHIER, who lived on an adjoining selection, and who, it was shown, had endeavoured to select land by means of Mary Ann DYKES, a girl 14 years of age, whom he had taken from the Geelong Orphan Asylum.......

The Age 20 Nov 1874 p3
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/201535295?
..... Mary Ann DYKES, an orphan child of fifteen years, who had sworn that she was eighteen years old when she applied, and subsequently wrote to ask that the selection might be forfeited, as she
was under that age........

My earlier requests -
 * Can you please identify the 6 births that you see to this couple.

* Marriage certificate for Mary Ann DYKES - does it describe father as being deceased.

* Can you list all the information on this document. It might lead to whoever brought her up.

Also, do you know why or what Jessie was doing in Hamilton in 1869?

Title: Re: Mary Dykes Death

 Ok
Jessie Davis Dykes - 1850 -1869 - didnt know she had died in Hamilton
Mary Anne Dykes - 1858 - 1914 died in NZ  - my ggrandmother
Samuel 1856 - died in a well aged very young
 Joseph John - 1861-1864
Andrew James - 1864- 1904 died in Geelong
John Dykes - father died 1863 Warnambool.

I dont think the marriage cert for Mary Anne says deceased for her parents, just trying
to find out from my mother who has it.

Jessie DYKES is buried in the Old Hamilton Cemetery, RC section, location unknown.  From the spelling of the name I'll assume Jessie is a female.  She was buried 15 Feb 1869.

Whoever the informant was, knew she was born in Belfast (Port Fairy) and her father was John DYKES but got her mother wrong!  Was she working there, passing through.... Hmmm.

Consider what BDM certificates will be of use to you, and why.

Death certificate of John DYKES.......will account for children....alive...deceased. His cause of death will be useful. If he died suddenly, then you might assume that he was working until then.

If he died of chronic illness, he might have been unable to support his family for some time before his death......how did Mary and children manage.

Marriage certificate for Mary Ann DYKES, 1884, in Victoria. It will name parents with possibly indication of them as (dec). Name of witnesses would be useful.

                                      -----------------------------------------------------

Is this information from your previous post? -

" Mary Ann (my ggrandmother) was deaf and cdnt communicate well.."

Was Mary Ann deaf as a child?  Mary Ann DYKES mentioned at reply #12 would seem to be confident and assertive. This Mary Ann DYKES wrote to the lands board folks about the original interview. If your Mary Ann was deaf as a child you might wonder about her chances at education.

You need to research all the children of John DYKES and Mary KELLY to locate Mary after the death of her husband.

When Jessie DYKES dies, there is someone around to be informant for the death record.

What is on this death certificate?

Is this information from your previous post? - about John DYKES -

"..This one died before 1884".

Is this taken from the 1884 marriage certificate for Mary Ann DYKES?

Does Mary Ann DYKES have family in New Zealand, 1884?

I can't find much on young Andrew DYKES.

A possible mention of him in trouble in 1882 for assault in Geelong.  I can't see a marriage for him in Victoria.

A probable death.

Andrew Dykes - thank you for looking into that, i knew he had ended up in Geelong but no other details.
The possibility Mary Dykes ended up in NZ, not one that was ever mentioned in the family that they had
a grandmother in NZ,we are the only branch of this family in NZ ,so it would be odd it was never talked of.
 Marriage Certificate
17/11/1884 John Murchland (39) labourer born Prince Edward Island Parents Joseph Murchland Margaret Crowe (farmer) - cant read where he was at time of marriage looks like Napamhe, then New Zealands mentioned.
Mary Ann Dykes (26) spinster born Warnambool. Near Echuca NSW at time of marriage. John/Mary Dykes (carpenter) parents. Wesley Methodist Church(i think , hard to read) Witness  ....Tuckfield, Margaret Tuckfield.

Just to add - from family knowledge we know John Murchland came and went from NZ to Australia in search of gold many times, so the NZ part is no surprise.

From the info you've given, it's possible that Mary Ann didn't know her mother's maiden name although without knowing how it is actually written on the MC its difficult to say.

Although, this is the Mary Ann you are claiming.  Her parents are John DYKES and Mary DYKES!
