Title: Death/burial for Stephen Short
Post by: Lisajb on Sunday 04 April 21 16:42 BST (UK)
Stephen is born around 1823 according to census in Bitton, and baptised there in 1827, the son of Isaac and Hannah.

I have found him on 1841 and 1851 census, still in Bitton.

In 1844 he marries Mary Short (yes, same surname, there are a few Short families in Bitton at the time.)

4 daughters are born. Mary appears without Stephen in the 1861 census and is down as widowed.

In 1871 Mary is still in Bitton, with Thomas Clitherow, (image says Kethro) and saying (or it’s assumed) she is his wife although I cannot find a marriage for them. An ancestry tree gives the marriage as 1868 although nothing to back this up.

Thomas, Mary and the 4 girls later move to Surrey, and remain there for the rest of their lives.

Can anyone find a death or burial for Stephen? He is not the 1851 death registered in Chipping Sodbury as that one is 80 years old.

It's a possible. I wonder if I could find anything else about this Stephen Short to see whether it's him  short of buying the cert.

Just starting to look at this, as my husband's maternal line (OSBORNE)  are from Bitton.

Samuel OSBORNE (Blacksmith)  and his wife Mary (nee SHORT) - first child christened at Bitton - 20 October 1822 -

We think Samuel OSBORNE married Mary SHARP* at St Paul's Bristol - 22 December 1816 - they both sign their name with an X  -  so couldn't read or write .....  One of their daughter's christened at Bitton 28  December 1828 - is named Mary Short OSBORNE.

Although it says SHARP most family researchers seem to think this should be SHORT.

The family live in Bristol St George 1841 onwards but the children are christened at Bitton.

I know the process of Hat making wasn't pleasant and they used Mercury in the process which affected their brains ... Hence Mad as a Hatter.

Had a look at the Bitton Family website to see if there are any burials listed etc., but no records there.

Harriet SHORT's marriage in 1871 - doesn't say Stephen SHORT, (deceased)

Rachel married in Mortlake, Surrey, in 1877 - certificate image is on line at Ancestry, and this also doesn’t say that Stephen is deceased.
