Title: Joe Millens
Post by: Georgina harris on Sunday 04 April 21 19:01 BST (UK)
Hi everyone, I would love to know more information about my grandfather Called “old Joe” real name Joe Millens, he was born the 10th April 1894, but I don’t know where he was buried, apparently he died 1963 at the age of 69.The only record of him I found on Ancestry is from 1939 when he was working at Hoads Farm. In position of Farm labourer. On that record he was there with my Nan Patience Harris, George Harris my dad, and Naomei Millens.

Is there anyone’s can tell me more about my grandfather joe Millens and Naomei Millens

You say he was your grandfather but he was single aged 45 on the 1939 census.  Who did he marry?
You refer to Patience Harris as your grandmother but she was Patricia & George Harris as your father so where does Millens fit in?

Dear Carol W, we know he was single, cause they never get married! Millens was my dad father. But because my Nan and joe they were not married, she kept her single name.

I think Patience may have been born in Uckfield Sussex. Do you think they could have been travellers? Patience/Patricia and Naomie were both listed as landworkers and hawkers in 1939.

Were you hoping to find out where they were born, and who their parents were? I haven't had much luck in my quick searches for births of your grandparents, but I am not sure how good they would have been at registering births?
There is a section on this site for traveller ancestry. If you click on "Forum" at the top of the page, then scroll down the list quite a long way, you will find Travelling people.

What relation was Naomi?  Patricia/Patience is not old enough to be her mother

I can't find a birth for Naomie either. A very elusive family!

I wonder if this could be Patience's family, possibility only of course. Thought they might be with a community of travellers but appear to be on their own.

Harris family, general hawkers living in two caravans Thetford.

That looks good, her age is about right. Still can't find a birth record - I suspect there isn't one.

I have asked the moderator to move your post to the Travelling People board as there may be people with more knowledge of the family etc

You say Naomi was his daughter from a previous marriage but he was single in 1939.  Like George - she may have been born under another surname

GRO Reference: 1907  S Quarter in HOO  Volume 02A  Page 722 (may have said Hove on census and been mistranscribed but both in Kent.

Wondering if Patience is really Louisa Alice as below.

GRAY, LOUISA  ALICE     HORNE
GRO Reference: 1901  D Quarter in BRAINTREE  Volume 04A  Page 857

It appears that children after Alger have surname Harris and from Uriah down to Louisa Alice with surname Gray.

Struggling with Hulia, Elias and Jenby at present. Cannot find any marriages for Horn/e-Gray or Horn/e/Harris or Harris/Gray that fit.

It's not easy when names, ages and places of birth vary, is it?

I'm wondering if this is Elias & family in 1881

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27D-1G91

There's another van next to them with a Harris family

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27D-1G7T

Could be a coincidence.
