Title: Looking for Philip Blessington...maybe?
Post by: deedale on Tuesday 06 April 21 16:15 BST (UK)
My great-great grandad was Michael Blessington born around 1831 in Ireland, probably Leitrim. His mother was Margaret Evers, sometimes listed as Maria, born 1791 in Leitrim, died 1860 in Bradford, Yorkshire.

The only evidence I have to go on that her husband was Philip is in Irish parish records of Ardagh where Michaelem (Michael) was baptised in 1838, his father Philipii (Philip) Blessington, and mother Maria Evers. Also baptised at the same time were 3 other Evers children, but I don't think that is relevant, though obviously I could be wrong.

She was a visitor to Bradford on the 1851 census, as were her children, then all in their 20s, but I can find no other trace of Philip, or another husband.

I have a Patrick (1790-1850) showing on another family tree as married to Margaret Evers, could this be the person I'm looking for and not Philip?  I have no way of substantiating this other than someone else's tree where they can't cite any sources.

Any help appreciated as I am really stuck. Thank you.

Dee

Yes, but as I say I am puzzled that at the baptism of Michael it was Philip Blessington and Maria Evers, not Patrick.

What information did the baptisms of these other children of Margaret give, all born Ireland

Mary   Blessington   c 1825
James Blessington   c 1827
Margaret   Blessington c 1831

Alternatively did they marry, what name was given for their father

I haven't found the baptism information for Mary, James and Margaret. Maybe I have been too focused on finding Philip Blessington, and I also have another child Rose Blessington Lynch Welsh, which another researcher gave me, but can't find any sources.

It is a shame that Michaels baptism and marriage are the only ones that appear to be visible online.  Typically online trees for the other children don't give their marriage details.  ::)

It does look as though it was possible 'Patrick was named as Philip' on Michaels baptism.

Annoying, but yes it is looking that way. Irish records seem so difficult to find and when I do, I can't read half of them, and I was top of the class at Latin!

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.
