The age of death suggests a birth year of 1854.

But you say he was a cousin of someone born 1912 - so maybe not first cousin? Or is 1912 wrong? How do you know that they were related?

The Sheffield Daily Telegraph has a  snippet of news on him dated 31st March 1916
"William Hardy, a Saxilby joiner, and his son were conveying a coffin in a light spring cart, and when near Hardwick the animal became very restive and the occupants alighted. They attempted to lead the pony but it reared and plunged but it eventually threw off its bridle broke loose and set off at a mad pace for Lincoln..." it knocked over two people but was eventually caught. I am hoping the coffin was empty at the time!

Lincolnshire Chronicle 10 Nov 1876

William and Jane are in the censuses in Saxilby, with a pob of Saxilby for William and yob around 1850.

Unfortunately freeBMD gives 2 possible births for a William Hardy in 1849,both in the reg district of Lincoln, which covers Saxilby.

The death was registered in E. Retford reg district which does not cover Saxilby.

Deaths are registered in the area that they occur.

Perhaps then we should be working from this marriage
Marriage Sep qtr 1900
Hardy    Thomas
Smith    Mary Ann
Worksop    7b   73

If William who died age 22 is a cousin to the Thomas born 1912 to Thomas & Mary Ann then he has to be a child of a sibling of Thomas Snr.

St John. Worksop
Marriage 20 Aug 1900
Thomas HARDY age 28 - Bachelor - occ Hawker
Groom abode   Building Ground Sandhill Street
Mary Ann  SMITH age 20 -    spinster
Bride abode   Building Ground Sandhill Street
Groom's  father    William Hardy occ Hawker
Bride's father Rudolph Smith occ Hawker

Are you sure about William who died being a cousin of your Thomas.  I can't give details but in 1911 Thomas & Mary A have a 'son' William that would fit with the age of the one that died.

All I know is William is a cousin of Thomas Hardy born 1872 who married Mary ann smith I made a mistake saying Thomas 1912. But thing is they very evasive with information I don't understand why. There's also Thomas born 1912 he married winfred Richardson they had a son called Thomas born 1935 so maybe William is his cousin. Its all confusing.. Thank you for your help and sorry for the confusion but this is how I'm told the story. Regards mandy

I have a William "Billy" Hardy in my family line, with similar dates, but in Canada. I don't know if perhaps that's possible for your line, but I thought I would mention it in the event that it helps with something :)

Thank you everyone for your help but I been going over the family again I have it wrong. But I'm told my  greatgrandad William was the cousin of Thomas Hardy born 1935 married rosetta pearcy. Thomas born 1935 his father Thomas Hardy born 1912 married winnifred Richardson. Then his father Thomas born 1872 Newark Notts then his father was was William Hardy born 1845 Notts. So sorry for the confusion. I'm looking into this side today again. I'm told that my great grandfather William was the nephew of Thomas born 1912 but I'm wondering if he was intact nephew of William 1872 instead. But like I say thank you everyone.

William Hardy aged 32 married 25 Nov 1878 at St Saviours Church, Clarborough, his wife was Rosanna SAXILBY (could this be where the Saxilby reference came in?)

Children of William and Rosanna
John D Q 1879 Doncaster 9c/656 MMS Saxilby
Sarah S Q 1884 East Retford 7b/16 MMS Saxilby
Charlotte D Q 1886 East Retford 7b/15 MMS Saxilby
Emily D Q 1891 East Retford 7b/15 MMS Saxilby
Mary Jane J Q Worksop 7b/26 MMS Saxilby.
Apart from John the rest of their children are daughters.

Now for your great grandfather William to be the cousin of Thomas Hardy (1935)  put simply, their fathers must have been brothers. So they share a set of grandparents.
There is a Robert Hardy and his wife Sarah baptising children in Newark.
3 Nov 1846 William Hardy father a labourer
8 Apr 1851 Thomas Hardy father a labourer abode Baldertongate.
28 Apr 1861 Henry Bower Hardy  father a potter abode Cross guns Yard
22 July 1856 Frederick father a Tramps and? Abode Nottingham.
so you need to look at the sons marriages and their children  and see if there is a cousin connection. Of course there is also the added complication if a daughter had a child!!
