Very sad news indeed, but at least he got to spend his last days at home with the Queen after his long stay in hospital.

So sad to hear. A man of great convictions and forthright with his opinions. He didn't suffer fools gladly. The support he gave to the Queen was immense.

A good and true man, greatly loved, often misjudged. He will be sorely missed by all but none more so than his wife and family. Let's not forget that this is what he was, an ordinary elderly man, with an equally elderly wife, who was much beloved and respected by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The fact that this is the Royal family doesn't matter right now; everything else should be forgotten over the next few days and weeks. May he rest in peace "You deserve it, Sir".

I'm sure that the last thing he would have wanted is a huge state funeral. He seems to have been a man often undervalued by many.

It’s such a shame he wasn’t able to hang on until his 100th birthday...

Having met the man on numerous occasions. I can verify that he was totally politically incorrect, liked to mix with the ordinary guys and the ruder the jokes and jibes the better.
First met him when I was about thirteen through the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme. then once more through that.
When I had relocated in the UK. I was part of the beating team at Lord Brabourne's estate, close to where I lived.
The whole of the family would visit the estate during the shooting season. Prince Phillip would be one of the most frequent and was a very good shot too.
After the shoot, the loaders and beaters were always well-fed, watered and paid. All of the guns would serve you the food and drink, then mix with you all laughing and chatting just like ordinary people. Had many a good weekend doing that.
Later on, in life, I met him and the queen sometimes twice a month, as had a job delivering the royal visit cars, for Ford Motor company.
A great man and a great loss, as an ambassador for normality in high ranking life, was his forte.
Sir I salute you for the last time may you rest in peace knowing a job was well done.

Astounded to read that people have been complaining about the amount of coverage on the BBC of Prince Philip's passing! If a man can spend over 70 years of his life serving our country in so many ways and supporting the Queen, surely this tribute to an exceptional man is fitting. Maybe some don't like things interfering with their usual programmes, but I find this attitude appalling.

I don’t think it’s a question of finding ‘this attitude appalling’.... it is right that there should be coverage about a person who has been behind our Queen for so many years.... but do you think it was necessary for both BBC1 & BBC2 to be covering the events.?
There are plenty of other channels for those who watch tv.. but it’s a bit blanket coverage isn’t it with ITV & Sky too....

What would be wrong with reading a book? No-one makes you watch television. I watched about an hour of it, after watching recorded "Young Montalbano" - nice and mindless to take your mind off the sad (but not unexpected) news, for a bit.
And obviously they all have the programmes organised and ready to slip swiftly into place. I suppose the Beeb felt offering something light-hearted on one of its other channels might seem crass?

We watched some of the coverage. Charles, Anne and the rest were dressed in black, talking extensively about their dad in the past tense - surely they must have recorded those interviews whilst he was still alive, which seemed rather strange.

We noticed that as well. Perhaps as Philip had been unwell for some time they had had time to prepare. As we know though, the Royals leave nothing to chance.
We watched the gun salute today, the British Military doing what they do best. What a wonderful send off.

I have a love photo of Prince Philip taken at Alnwick Gardens on a visit with the Queen he made his way over to us and spoke the lady next to me she had just been to pick up a new baby to foster I took photos for her as her husband was way back in the crowd I posted them off to her and she didn’t know he had a hold of her elbow I expect she too is think of that day Elizabeth

My stepfather met him, in the beer tent at Badminton horse trials.
Stepdad said he was using some pretty fruity language to complain about a footman being sent back to London to get a hat for the Queen Mother.
One of a kind, who did things his own way.

Watching all the programmes about him, sad as the news was, it brought back some happy memories for me. My late husband and I were fortunate enough to meet him several times over the years, both together and separately. We both enjoyed his wit an humour, he was very interesting to talk to. When he asked a question about you, he made you feel that he really was interested.
On one occasion I had the honour of acting as hostess to him at a small event. He asked me where my husband was because we had been together at a previous meetings. I had to explain that, as it was a ladies affair, husbands were not included. He made some joke about our husbands allowing us out unaccompanied.

I'm not so sure, Anne's eyes looked as if she had been crying. Noticeable that Andrew wasn't included.
However, just read this and it does sound as if they were pre-recorded

I cannot believe that so many people have objected to the BBC coverage of his demise - over 100,000. But then, perhaps, I'm just an "old fogey".

There are 4 main BBC Channels now, I think.
BBC News, BBC 1, and BBC 2 all showed the same programme, whilst BBC4 was taken off air.
We can only watch one channel at once.
Additionally, Sky News and ITV showed programmes.

To be fair to the 'moaners', BBC1, BBC2 and the BBC News and Sky News channels were all changed so there wasn't much choice. I'm not sure about ITV.
I remember when George VI died, there was solemn music on the radio and all the newspapers had black edges.

As i said to OH, even if you were annoyed you might grumble a bit at home but you wouldn’t bother complaining direct to the BBC.

I think the main problem was that it was the same coverage on all 4 BBC channels. As someone said earlier we can only watch one channel at a time so why not just disrupt one channel rather than all their channels?

The same could be said about Sports coverage, many people ,a good proportion ,are old and sometimes there is not much else on, that gives me thr fed ups,

There are also a range of Sky Sports channels. In fact there's not much sport on the freeview channels these days.

Not all old people of course but many ,especially women .
My OH died aged 83,loved footie,rugby cricket ,billiards and snooker .
I like Rugby( it’s the legs!) and whilst I don’t fully understand all the rules -,Cricket.
Many ladies do not however and sometimes there is not much else on .
As has been said,a dedicated channel would be the answer .

It wasn’t disrespect for the Duke and the Royal family, it was the same item being broadcast on all available channels.

I agree, at one point I turned over and thought my remote wasn't working as the programme stayed exactly the same. By the evening it was the same thing repeated several times as well.

I feel people should just accept what the BBC are doing, this is not the time to complain. It is the same as all the fuss about Harry & William, let it be. There will be plenty of time to complain but now is not the time, it is not the Queen who is behind this but it is her Majesty who will be most upset by such complaints.
I suggest do not complain now what has happened has happened, the time to complain is a reasonable time after the funeral when things are reviewed at the BBC. Then the complaints should be addressed directly to the BBC where is will be seen and not on forums that the BBC will not read.

Yes, Guy, and as he comes through as not a self seeker perhaps he would be embarrassed ,but there were tremendous achievements .
I just wonder if some of those complaining would do so had it been a so called celebrity,you know one of the celebrities many of us have never heard of!
Many of his achievements I had never heard about ,so just for a little while surely we can be tolerant .
It will do us no harm at all.

I have Freeview TV and there seemed to be many other channels devoting their time to broadcasting the death, plus the life and times of Prince Philip.
The BBC's response to the viewers who complained about Master Chef final being pulled was this:-
"“We do not make such changes without careful consideration and the decisions made reflect the role the BBC plays as the national broadcaster, during moments of national significance.”
This statement reminded me of the years sat listening to the news readers who sent coded messages to foreign underground resistance movements, that went something like: "Aunt Betty is sending you a cake she has baked", etc. etc.
