Title: help needed in trying to trace a ancestor
Post by: indigo78 on Thursday 22 April 21 18:02 BST (UK)
I'm hoping someone maybe able to help me solve the mystery of who this lady is.
I am trying to trace information on a Frances Emelie maiden name unknown who married a joseph William chitty born Petersfield Hampshire in 1862 or so it says in the census records. I have not been able to find a marriage certificate. Frances also known as Emily or Emelie in some records was born abt 1864 in Northam Devon. She and Joseph were both witnesses at my great grandmother Amy Bowden's wedding in Chertsey surrey. Frances also came from the same area as my great grandmother in Northam. I know Frances and joseph ran a pub called the coach and horses in Chertsey. What i would love to find is a birth register and maiden name for Frances and a marriage certificate. I have been trying to solve this for a good few years now but still have no idea who Frances was or if she was indeed related to my great grandmother.
Any help would be much appreciated

Do you have a date for this newspaper article please? Also this confirms Frances was related as it states Mrs Gillard as her daughter. My great grandmother Amy Bowden went on to marry a George Gillard so it looks as if Frances Emilie chitty was my g g grandmother.

1911 census says married 14 years, no children so step mother or step father maybe.

yes it's all a little odd. As my great grandmother Amy's mother Fanny Burden was married to a Alfred Bowden who died in 1889 so i'm thinking the same Fanny Bowden (is the said Frances Emelie Chitty) who went on to marry Joseph William Chitty.

For whatever reason, it does not look like Joseph William Chitty and Fanny/Frances Amelia/Emily Bowden, nee Burden where ever legally married, not in the UK anyway.   He was still single in 1891.

Alfred Bowden married Fanny Burden Sept.1880 Bideford and in 1881 census she is shown as bc.1859 Bideford so was a few years older than she later admitted to.

As plain Fanny Burden her birth was in Sept.qtr.1858, mmn Spearman.   She was indeed born Bideford although living in Northam in 1871.  Her parents were Henry and Betsy.

Henry Burden married Betsey Spearman Dec.1844 Bideford.

Just to confirm all of this, in 1891 your 'Amy' - shown as Fanny E. Bowden - is living with said grandparents Henry and Betsy.  Where her mother is in 1891 I have no idea - cannot find her under any of her christian names.

Fanny Burden bp.25/7/1858 Bideford, dau. of Henry and Betsy - he was a Limeburner.

yes this is the said family. It would seem that they never did marry but she took his name. Is it possible for this to have happened? even on the death records registered it states chitty.

The frances burdon in this record is stated as being single in 1891 she would have been Bowden. Her husband Alfred died in 1889.
