Today, I found the death record for Elizabeth Watterson, nee Clarke, married, age 75, in Lower Mullan. That should mean that her husband Ignatius was still alive. In 1909, Ignatius emigrated to the USA and I didn't know if he ever returned. In 1930, I found a travel record for their daughter Mary who was to return to the USA but apparently Mary did not sail then. Her mother was given as Elizabeth Watterson of Ballinderry Bridge, Lower Mullan. When Ignatius travelled in 1909, he gave his person of contact as Mrs. Watterson of Ballinderry Bridge, Lowe Mullan. Same family.
When Elizabeth died, her son Benjamin was present.
Thanks for any help with an obituary or whatever.

Wow, rosie17 and *Sandra*, you are fantastic. There is not a doubt in my mind that you have found the correct Mary Watterson in Brooklyn and her marriage, son, and deaths of herself, her husband, and son. Mary was actually born Mar 24, 1902 as I have her birth record in Ireland , not 1910, but there is no doubt this is Mary as it gives her parents' names as Ignatius Watterson and Elizabeth Clarke.
Now for Ignatius - this is very, very likely to be him in 1910 in Philadelphia, even though in 1909 he was supposedly headed for Illinois. Ignatius had been in Philadelphia 1891-1894 before he married Elizabeth in 1895. I have to wonder if there was a rule or at least a tendency for hospital workers in USA to say they were single, as did Ignatius and also Samuel George Buick.
Ignatius was born Nov 1, 1863 so his age in 1919 would be exactly 56. Must be him returning to Ireland. I tried to find this return trip to see the details but could not find it. Ignatius did not have a brother Samuel but there was a Samuel living in Pennsylvania born 1876 Ireland as well as Samuel's son Samuel born 1913 in Philadelphia. The elder Samuel was a first cousin once removed to Elizabeth Clarke, the wife of Ignatius. Was Samuel mentioned when Ignatius returned to Ireland in 1919? Love to see that.
Thank you so very much, you wonderful people.
Peggy
-
Peggy if you just put Ignatius Watterson birth year 1863
Departure Philadelphia 1919
You should find it
The reason I asked if he had a brother Samuel was because I seen his death in 1954 in Pennsylvania
Rosie
-
i used familysearch and still could not bring up the departure of Ignatius in 1919 from Philadelphia. As for the death of Samuel in 1954 that would be the previously mentioned Samuel, son of Joseph Watterson and Mary Ann Clarke.
Ignatius was married to Elizabeth Clarke. There is bound to be a Watterson connection as well but I don't have that sorted out as yet. There are many Watterson/Watterson marriages, as well as Watterson/Clarke marriages.
It is possible Ignatius died in Ireland Mar 12, 1942 but the death was in an infirmary in Magherafelt, and no relatives are present at death.
One of the reasons that I was looking for Elizabeth's obit was that, besides Benjamin present at her death, and Mary living in Brooklyn, there were 2 other daughters that I was wondering about - Helena aka Lena aka Fanny born 1897 and Margaret born abt 1904. Both Helena and Margaret were on the 1911 census in Ireland.
Peggy
-
Did you find the births for Helena /Lena/Fanny ..And for Margaret in Ireland I'm not having much luck with them ???I

Helena aka Lena aka Fanny born 1897 and Margaret born abt 1904. Both Helena and Margaret were on the 1911 census in Ireland.

More wonderful messages while I was off to the opthamologist. First of all, Kiltaglassan and rosie17, that would be the correct Lena Watterson who married David Crossett in 1920 with father Ignatius.
At birth, Lena was registered as Fanny Watterson May 23, 1897. On the 1901 census, she is Helena Watters and on the 1911, she is Lena Watterson.
Mary was Mary at birth Mar 24, 1902 but Sarah on the 1911 census. Now we have tracked her till her death in Brooklyn, thanks to all your wonderful help.
Benjamin was born Aug 11, 1895 in Ballymulderg More, Co. Derry, but the family moved down to Mullan, Co. Tyrone. He was still alive in 1936 when his mother died.
Margaret on the 1911 - I did not find her birth abt 1904. Her only brother that I know of was Benjamin.
Sandra, her details do not fit the Margaret Helena Watterson born 1907 Lisnamorrow with brother R. J. Robert in Belfast and brother Joseph in USA. I do have a Margaret born 1890 in Ballymulderg with brother Robert John born 1885 but no brother Joseph unless I am missing him. I believe this Margaret has been mentioned before and I couldn't place her then and I still can't. Something else I must pursue as I am now intrigued. She should be on the 1930 census at 556 West 140 th Street New York since she was in the USA Nov 1929-1935.
As for Samuel, who died 1954, it was his wife Margaret nee Bell who died in 1937.
There is another Mary Watterson who lived at 2095 Nostrand Ave., Brooklyn in 1927 as did her cousin Elizabeth Watterson (Elizabeth was sister-in-law to Samuel George Buick). I haven't figured out Mary as yet.
Thanks again all of you.
Peggy

Sandra - You found a Margaret Helena Watterson born 1903 travelling to the USA in 1929 who had a sister-in-law Mrs. E. Watterson of 159 Old Park Road, Belfast. Well, this is what was mentioned before. Maybe we can sort this Margaret Helena and Elizabeth out.
Elizabeth
Last name Watterson
Gender Female
Age 36
Birth year 1894
Occupation Grocer
Departure year 1930
Departure day 31
Departure month 8
Departure port Belfast
Destination port New York
Last address 159 Oldpark Road, Belfast.
From a 1956 newspaper:
Quote
. FOUND IN SODA FARL A piece of metal three-quarters of an inch square found in a soda farl led to Elizabeth Waterson. of 159 Oldpark Road. being fined ... at Belfast Summons Court today for selling unfit food
Ah, but then this likely rules her out, also from 1956 newspaper:
Quote
. Mrs. Elizabeth Watterson, trading as Elizabeth Halliday, 159 Oldpark Road
-
I found the birth of Margaret Helena Watterson, July 18, 1906, Lisnamorrow to Joseph Watterson and Margaret Pattison/Patterson.
Brother Robert John-May 13, 1895 Lisnamorrow
Brother Thomas James - Jan 12,1897
Brother Joseph April 20, 1904
Sister Mary Jane Watterson Feb 1,1908 (think this is Eliza Jane on 1911 census)
Gotta be the right family.
Now who did Mrs. E. Watterson marry?
Peggy
-
I think Mrs. E. Watterson must be the wife of Robert John Watterson, who was a grocer on 159 Oldpark Rd., Belfast in 1939, as per Belfast Street Directory.
157 RJ Watterson Pharmaceutical Chemist
159 RJ Watterson Grocer

Reply 11 and Reply 12 are the same Margaret Helena Watterson - the birth year 1907 may be incorrect, this can often happen on passenger lists. Even the description given re hair colour etc is the same.
On the 1929 passenger lists she was going to Joseph Watterson at 161 East 69 th Street New York.
On the 1935 passenger list she was going to 556 West 140th Street New York.

*Sandra*, you have done an absolutely awesome job of tracing Joseph Watterson and Alexander Watterson in New York, including wives and children. I did find the marriage of Margaret Watterson to Dale Lee Tryon in 1979 - his third marriage.
Please accept my apologies for my wording regarding Margaret Watterson in an earlier posting. I meant that Margaret Watterson, daughter of Ignatius Watterson and Elizabeth Clarke, was not the same Margaret as you had found travelling to New York in 1929 and 1935, whose parents turned out to be Joseph Watterson and Margaret Jane Pattison/Patterson. I wonder why Margaret and Alexander had returned to Ireland 1935 - maybe their mother had died. Their father Joseph had died in 1932.
We know now that their brother Thomas was still alive in 1935.
I have tried and tried to find Margaret in New York without any luck. I wonder if she married after 1935 as she would have been 29 by then.
When Joseph emigrated in 1927, he was with his cousin Henry James Watterson whom I do not have on my tree as yet - his father William, and his relative in USA Mrs. Martha McAleese.
Thanks ever so much,
Peggy
-
I have found Martha McAleese in Philadelphia in 1910, 1920, and 1930. She is the aunt to Henry James Watterson. She was born Martha Watterson, anywhere from 1870-1879 as per the different censuses, emigrated 1891, ,married John McAleese in 1898 in Philadelphia, although I don't have her marriage certificate. They had a daughter Helen in 1899. Later a son John. Martha's husband John is deceased before 1920. He was born abt 1868 in Ireland.
I did find a Martha Watterson born 1879 to Jonathan Watterson and Nancy Jane Love, no idea if correct person.
Peggy
-
Now I found Martha's death in 1935 in Philadelphia. Her parents were Joseph Watterson and Eliza Hurl. Progress. But I don't have a brother William for her, who is supposed to be the father of Henry James. Have to keep looking.
Peggy
-
Sorry, Martha’s death certificate says her parents were JAMES Watterson and Elizabeth Hurl. I have figured out that Martha’s son was mistaken and Martha’s parents were James Watterson and MARGARET Hurl who did have a daughter Martha in 1868 and a son William James who had a son William James in 1902 but the son is on the 1911 Census as Henry James. This all fits with the age of Henry James on emigration in 1927 going to his aunt Martha McAleese in Philadelphia. It would clinch things if parents were given when Martha Watterson married John McAleese in 1898 in Philadelphia.
James Watterson who married Margaret Hurl and Joseph Watterson who married Eliza Ann Hurl were brothers but the Hurls were not sisters although surely related.
Peggy
-
I just went to the Irish Genealogical Group database and they have the marriage of Mary Watterson to Louis Van Bochel aka Boekel on Oct 30, 1934. But they also had the marriage of a Mary L. Watterson May 17, 1932 to Francis M. Doran.
It would be great to know the parents of Mary L. Watterson. I did look for the marriage on familysearch to no avail. I did find the birth and death of a Rosemary Doran, 1934-1937 who belonged to this couple. I did find this couple on the 1940 census and Mary L. was 26 so born 1914ish in New York. Young bride. Still don't know parents.
I did not find marriages on that website for Joseph, Henry James or Elizabeth Watterson.
Thanks for any help
Peggy
-
Many thanks to Sandra who tracked Joseph Watterson through his marriage to Gladys Pelling and the birth of their daughter Margaret who married Dale Lee Tryon. Perhaps Margaret Tryon is still alive.
Anyway, I decided to find Henry James Watterson, his cousin. I did find him on the 1930 census, single, with Viola Moore living in the same household. Apparently, he married her in 1932 and I found them on the 1940 census, in Philadelphia, with daughter Viola E. Watterson, age 5. And surprise! His uncle Adam, age 62, widowed, is living with him.
So I went in search of Adam. I had to work backwards but Adam married Susan Leslie Mar 21, 1913 in Magherafelt, Ireland and they immediately emigrated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in Mar 1913, then Adam crossed the border from Hamilton, Canada (presuming Ontario) to Buffalo, NY on June 19, 1913 and they are in Philadelphia by 1914 when their daughter Anna died. They had daughter Margaret in 1915, Elizabeth 1916, and Evine 1919.
Then Susan died between the 1920 and 1930 censuses, and the girls cannot be found in 1930 although I found Adam in 1930 and in 1940. I don't have the date of death of Adam or his nephew Henry James or Susan. But I am pretty sure Margaret died Sept 22, 2011 unmarried, in Philadelphia. If someone could find her obit, it could be very interesting.
Thanks everyone for all your wonderful help.
I tried to post the 1920 census for Adam but the site won't let me even after I resized it. Sorry
