I have just found a burial record on Ancestry from 1908 showing that my great-great grandmother was buried in Barnet cemetary. Does anyone know where that is in Barnet and where further records would be?
She lived in St Pancras, just north of Tottenham Court Road, is it likely that she would be buried as far away as Barnet ?
-
There appear to be a number of cemeteries in north London that now come under the control of Borough of Barnet.
Do you have any further information? I know that area of London (a bit)

Islington and St Pancras Cemetery is in East Finchley, which is in the London Borough of Barnet.

My husband's aunt lived in the St Pancras area, and was buried at this cemetery in 1974.

I would have thought it would be Hendon Cemetery.

It's most likely to be St Pancras Cemetery, as explained by JenB above. This is not in Barnet itself but in East Finchley, which is in the London Borough of Barnet, a borough that covers a very large part of north London.
(It won't be Hendon, because Hendon's records aren't on Ancestry.)

Thanks for your help. I have been to Finchley cemetery before and will enquire about her grave next time I visit.

Maybe Friern Barnet Cemetery (https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2432819/memorial-search#srp-top). Only a few of he burials there have been entered on Find a Grave, but you could browse the Ancestry database on which you found your gggm to see if any of the names on FaG's list are there too.
-
deejayEn, as several counter-suggestions have now been made, you may want to post your ancestor’s name and the details found on Ancestry, so that we can look at the record and advise further?

Her name was Susan Emma Grant (nee Cowell) died age 60 in 1908, lived in St Pancras.

Ancestry has the burial at Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium.
Strangely it doesn’t show up on a search on the card index :-\

I just looked at the Hendon memorial site and there is no reference there. Maybe it has an unmarked grave? Where on the Ancestry records does it say Hendon?

Look at the actual image. At the top the heading clearly says Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium.

Hendon Cemetery seems to be tucked away on Ancestry, along with many others in ‘England and Scotland, Select Cemetery Registers’. I can’t find it as a separate item on a catalogue search.

Apologies, I didn't realise any Hendon records were lurking there.
But Hendon it must be, as that is the only Barnet source given for that database.

Barnet's cemetery services would be the best source for further information. If the burial is in the Hendon cemetery (most likely, see below) then it is still in active use.
Barnet (or at least Hendon) isn't that far from Central London. The modern borough is home to many municipal cemeteries established by Inner-London boroughs (and some private organisations) when burial space in London was running out and the Victorians decided to do something about it (circa 1850). See below, and also another example of New Southgate Cemetery which was established as a railway-served site with a rail link from a dedicated station near Kings Cross.
Islington and St Pancras Cemetery is in East Finchley, which is in the London Borough of Barnet.
Yes, although the cemetery is within the borough of Barnet, that council has nothing to do with the ownership or operation of the cemetery. Camden and Islington boroughs operate it.
Likewise (and not to be confused with) the nearby East Finchley Cemetery which is owned and operated by Westminster.

I've been finding that collection of registers very useful in recent months. :) From the research I've been doing I suspect the data is actually from digitising the records held by the named municipal authority, and not necessarily the named cemetery. Some of the Hendon/Barnet records I've found are for closed cemeteries within the borough and not Hendon Cemetery itself. Likewise the Gt Yarmouth records are for more than one location.
"Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium" is the location of Barnet's cemetery services for the whole borough, and that name is used on any correspondence or official documents - I suspect Ancestry have picked up that name and used it to describe the whole record set, in much the same way as Susan Grant's burial place is given as "Barnet, London, London, England". I'd be cautious about the accuracy of either description being correct for any given burial record.
However, the cover and labeling of the volume (seen in images 1 and 2) containing Susan Grant's burial record is consistent with volumes for burials I know were definitely in Hendon Cemetery - so I think that is likely to be the right cemetery location in this case.

I grew up near Hendon and would have said it was in Middlesex, but the cemetery most definitely comes under Barnet (which to me is in Herts!)

I didn't say it was run by the Borough of Barnet, I said it was IN the Borough of Barnet.

I didn't say you did say it was run by the Borough of Barnet.
I was making the point for deejayEn's benefit that the borough contains cemeteries serving several inner/central London boroughs and that it was entirely normal for someone living in those areas to be buried as 'far away' as Barnet (borough).

So it sounds like Hendon cemetery. Thanks to all who helped, I still can't see Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium mentioned on the record I found on Ancestry, in fact there is no mention of which cemetery it is anywhere, except on the record search listing on Ancestry whuich is where it says Barnet.

When you view the image there is text displayed immediately above saying -
"England > Greater London > Hendon Cemetery and Crematorium > 1907-1908"
If you click on any of those you'll get a drop-down list of other options.
But as I said, I'd normally treat that as a guide rather than definitive, and check with other sources.

I can see that now, thanks!
