Title: Ancestry Subscription Discount
Post by: chiddicks on Sunday 02 May 21 21:47 BST (UK)
Hi, my ancestry membership is up for renewal shortly has anybody renewed recently and are they still offering 50% discounts? Thanks

No one has reported that the offer is not available.

You need to have cancelled your current subscription and not renewed - waiting until it has run out.   Be logged into your ancestry account and then use the link from here.

IF you use an i pad to re-subscribe using this link, you may have to refresh the screen a couple of times for the 12 month offer to appear. Sometimes it can take a few attempts.

Good Luck

Thanks Sandra for keeping the link available!

I also managed to get 20% off my FindMyPast sub thanks to Lost Cousins site last month too.

Good luck!

Thank you Sandra, this link just worked for me  ;D This is now my third half-price renewal, thanks to Rootschat links.

I do like Ancestry's "welcome" email as a new member - "Your ancestral journey starts here".  Well, I actually started the journey back in 2000 and I'm still not finished  ;)

Does anyone know if this is available in Ireland? Despite trying multiple occasions when my subscription ended, I was unable to access this discount.

Apologies Sandra, I didn't notice your reply.

I Was using my laptop (Windows 10 and Chrome. Also tried it on Edge). All I could access was the price for 6 months with no discount despite refreshing the page numerous times  :'(

The link is still there, (for anyone who doesn't currently have an active sub).

My tried and tested method for a few years now now is to not allow my sub to auto renew, but cancel it a few days before its due to lapse (it will continue to function until the end of the subscription period)
Then, the morning after the sub expires, I log into my account and my account shows I am now a registered guest  but no longer a current subscriber (any trees are all still there)

Finally, still logged in, I then click on the link, see the offer and choose the level required and click the `Get Started' button.

That brings up my account details (name etc), shows the correct offer amount for the level I have chosen and a payment screen. Enter the payment details and off I go again for another year.

I have an old expired account with a different user name and email address, so I have just logged into that and got as far as the payment screen to test the link - obviously didn't enter any payment details as I already have a current sub with my newer email and username, but its still functioning just as it has for years.

Yes, I did that, clicking on the link while being logged into Anc after the end of my subscription, but could only see the six month at full price option. Maybe it's blocked for Irish subscribers. That's why I was wondering if any Irish Rootschatters had managed to avail of this offer. It's a great offer, sad I can't get it. 😢

Thanks for all the replies 😊

Pretty sure we had someone from Sweden who managed to get this offer.

Has your subscription been cancelled ?  Are you logged in to ancestry when you try the link ?

I have found that it can sometimes take several tries to get the half-price offer to come up.  Both when trying to subscribe myself, and when helping someone else.  Always got there in the end, so be persistent.

I'm afraid it looks as if this may have been stopped. People on several groups I'm in have said they can't get it today. The offer comes up but when they click to apply it, it reverts to 6 months. Luckily I renewed last week.

No they have kept trying and are people who have used it before.

Some people have managed to get it by calling Ancestry, but others have just been told they don't have any offers at the moment - it seems to depend who you speak to.

The problem with that offer is that it wasn't supposed to be for renewing subscriptions but for new subscribers. It worked as people found the loophole, that once you stopped subscribing even for a few hours, you counted as a new subscriber. Be interesting to know what they say.

From another FH group, it appears the 50% offer is now only offered to those activating a dna kit with a link at the bottom of the dna page. It isn’t clear if you already subscribe and then buy a kit whether or not you will be offered the discount, or whether it is new subscribers only.

and I just tried it with an old account - not subbed to for a few years - and now shows as a registered guest. Logged in, clicked the original link which gave me the half price offer and when I chose the Worldwide one took me through to the account page to pay - showed the correct (half price) amount to pay . Though obviously I then closed the page down as I have a current sub with a different email and user name.

So looks promising, which is good as unless its available when my actual account is due to renew I won't be renewing with them at all.

I've only just read the new posts on this thread saying the original link is now working again.  My sub is due to renew at full cost in less than 1 hour, I have just cancelled it and received a confirmation email to confirm the cancellation.

Phew - talk about just in the nick of time.  I'll give it a couple of days then try the half price link, it worked for me last year.

Thanks for the updates  :D

I think it's a good idea to leave a gap between subscriptions anyway, rather than let it renew automatically.  In the past when I have cancelled they've often made an offer to get me back.

Here in Ireland, using that link, the best I am being offered is €109.98 for six months on the top product, €75.99 for just Ireland/UK.

Putting on a VPN and pretending in to be in the UK, I got the same offer in sterling, but with an additional option of a 'Key UK Census Records Only' sub.

I was offered a better deal by phone (€199.99 for the top product for a year). Still outrageously expensive for what you get.

Yes my sub has expired. Yes I was logged out, though it would not let me log in as guest, only using my last username or one I used to use years ago. Even when I made a new account to try get a free trial it kept switching me back to one of the old accounts.
They also would not honour a deal they were supposed to be doing for members of the Irish Genealogical Research Society.

Perhaps logging out was the problem?

Whenever I have taken advantage of this offer, once the sub has expired I log in (with my longstanding, hasn't changed) username and look at the account settings.
In there,  my status in the membership section  has changed from 'Worldwide Membership' to 'Registered Guest'.
I stay logged in and click the offer link  and it lets me pay the reduced price. I've used that same method for a good few years now. Hand in the air, if I didn't use the link I probably wouldn't re-sub at all.

I cancelled the sub a few weeks ago - and it seems to now be very longwinded to do so. I kept going till eventually I got an email to acknowledge I had cancelled and that the current sub would expire on the end date. At that stage my account said it was Expiring on 30th Nov and then this morning it said Registered Guest.

It is worth being sure you have cancelled before the expiry date, I would definitely not have renewed at the renewal price of £179.99, especially as we are about to get the 1921 census elsewhere and it will be years before Ancestry have it.

My subscription ends this month & I bought the UK based version via the link last year. I have just checked & the automatic renewal is showing at £59.99. However, the email I received last week said £119. Has anyone just let it run & been given the cheaper price? (It definitely say renewal price £59.99 on my membership)

Suzanne.

Unless you want to take a chance, it would be a miracle if that happened.  Never heard of anyone in that scenario.  It is usual to cancel your auto renewal and then renew on the link

Thanks Sandra.

I just cancelled. I would have asked Ancestry, but couldn't work out how to contact them  ::)
I will do what I did last year, but get the World Wide addition.

Tried again.

This time......

I cleared all ancestry cookies
Put on a VPN and pretended to be in the UK
Got the half-price offer page.
Tried to pay through PayPal and it didn't like that (scary 'there is an issue with your order' message)
Tried a second time to pay using a card and it went through.

Thanks to all for the tip. Got the worldwide for 89.99 sterling (€106.21 which is not too bad an exchange rate).

I purchased a full price £79, Ancestry DNA kit. I was certain that buying the kit would give me a discounted full subscription that I could then buy later. But now i am unable to find anything. Ideas???

I'll wait to see if there's any Black Friday deals.

Don't give up. The offer is there.   Presume your subscription has expired or have cancelled it.

Are you logged in as a guest ?
Then click the link in a new window.
Sometimes you do have to persevere but it should appear eventually.

In case it should help anyone..
I tried all sorts of combinations, different browsers, different devices etc. to try and get the Worldwide subscription for 12 months at £89.99.
Nothing worked until I right clicked and saved the link to my "Downloads" folder instead of the Desktop folder.
Not sure why that made a difference but very glad it did.
Thanks to everyone for the initial right- click tip!

I also can't get this to work for me, it's worked fine for the last 2 years.

I've been trying for 2-3 days, tried everything that Purpeller has done and Sandra has suggested, including clearing cache & cookies, different browser, different computer etc.  I just get the 1 month/6 month offer page each time.

I'll persevere a bit longer ...... but maybe it has been pulled.

Mine due then too, but I am not hopeful. I've always (until very recently) been able to see this offer whilst logged into a long expired and no longer used account. Now going via that route just brings up the standard offer.

I'll try again after the expiry date, but if this offer has been pulled then I'll just let my sub to Ancestry lie dormant until/unless they add something that 'really' grabs my attention at which stage I'll buy a months sub and hammer it till I run out of stuff to look up.

Using that method, financially I'd gain and Ancestry lose, but that is their choice.

Oh dear, this is a blow for RootsChatters. Luckily I had just renewed my own for the next 12 months. Yesterday, I also tried to create a new account and it still wouldn't come up with the offer that way either.  :'(

I didn't get very far with this link either :-  :'(

a week or so ago when I went into ancestry, (via my dna summary), I was surprised to see a subscription offer of 50% off an annual sub (which made it the same as the offer in the link), I must admit it crossed my mind whether the link had been 'superseded' in some way.
I have a valid sub so the offer wasn't relevant to me.

However maybe they will offer that from time to time, I don't have any insider info, but I was surprised to see it.

We have kindly been updated regarding this link by gtwo RootsChatters this morning.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=862719.msg7382218

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/offers/subscribe?dna=crossAct

Apparently it still does work - RootsChatters have downloaded this link as an html file as per previously suggested but because of circumstances had not used it.  Today they have just tried it and it takes you to the page with 50% discount on either uk or worldwide. When you click on the "get started" button it takes you to the login page.  If you login, it takes you to the payment page and the offer appears to be still available.

Hope everyone has some luck with this system or by ringing ancestry support can manage to get a half price offer on UK and Worldwide subs.

Cheers everyone

Apparently by putting the above link into Google and pressing 'esc' before Ancestry redirects you, it should be possible to access the old page. Unfortunately all it does is take you to an Ancestry Error: 500 'We're sorry this page is unavailable'.

The desktop shows the Microsoft edge symbol and underneath subscribe, but when you bring up the properties screen either on the desktop or in folder the file is stored in, it shows its an html file, its called subscribe.htm and thats all plus a file path back to the desktop

Please rename your "subscribe.htm" file as "subscribe.txt" and upload it here as an attachment. That will allow us to see the offer code and generate a new link for us all to use.

For anyone who also needs a DNA kit (maybe as an Xmas present) the current UK bundle offer for a 3-month Worldwide subscription for an extra £1 is excellent.

Current price for the DNA kit is £49 (plus £9.99 postage) until 29th Nov.

Direct link for the bundle...

p.s. I'd still like someone who saved the annual half price £89.99 offer as an html file to upload a copy of the file.

I downloaded the file back in May.  At the time it wouldn't work for me and I ended up using a library computer to subscribe.  The file was called "Join Ancestry.html" with a little registered trademark symbol after the word ancestry.

I've taken a copy of the file and renamed the copy as a txt file (so I still have the original).  It's well oversize for posting here, even chopping it into allowable chunks would take a long time (Word says 94 pages).  If someone here thinks they might be able to make something workable from it I could email the txt file which is apparently 248 KB.  It begins:

Thanks Jane - you should be able to attach the .txt file to a reply here (not copy/paste the whole thing  :) ).
When you reply, look below the text keying box and click on the "Attachments and other options" link.
Then you should be able to attach the file using the "Choose file" button that appears.

I have attached a simple file here just to (hopefully) prove it works :-)

Thanks Jane, got the file now.
Unfortunately I don't think it's a saved version of the page that showed the 2 offers AFTER logging in.
i.e. the page with the text on the screen that said :

Search more than 1 billion UK records, photos, and more
Build a family tree with helpful hints on finding your ancestors

If somebody has that html page saved and can share it here then I should be able to get the offer codes from behind the two "Get Started" buttons.

Unfortunately all I saved at the time was a screen grab (attached)...

Thanks!

Well it was worth a try anyway.  What you say sounds right storri1, as when I tried it from my home computer, ie where I saved the link to, I only got 6 month & 1 month from memory. I don't usually save links, I only did it in this case as it was a suggested workaround when a straightforward click through didn't work.  Should have saved it at the library, where it worked, but was so chuffed that it HAD worked I just wanted to get in and out asap and back home!

So what we need is someone who saved the link, managed to get that link to work, and didn't delete it after use 🤞

I received an email from Ancestry about a week and a half ago saying that my annual Premium membership would renew on 14 December at a cost of £119.99.
I emailed back asking for any available discounts and got no reply so found the contact number (0800 783 1340) on Monday and rang them up.
Immediate 25% discount to renew on 14 December at £89.99.

I had a similar experience with FindMyPast at the start of this month.
I received my Pro membership renewal notification with a cost of £179.99 - 15% loyalty discount. As Premium is only an extra £20, and free access to the 1921 census would be useful for local history research I do, I emailed asking if I could upgrade at the same time and still get 15% off the lot, paying £169.99. Also asked if there was any extra discount available to pensioners such as myself ;)
I received a reply saying that the upgrade route is only through paying the extra £19.99 but I should wait until renewal as it is so close and it only lasts until the end of the current subscription.
However, given the length of my membership they would give me a 20% discount on my renewal and then I could upgrade for £19.99 once it goes through. So, that is £143.99 + £19.99 so £163.98 in total, 6 quid less than I was looking for.

I think that's two satisfactory results :)

Anyone want to have another go?  I emailed this link to a friend in 2020, back when it WAS working.  I've saved the link from my sent mail, file name was "subscribe.htm".

That file is strange as it already has 2022 dates in it, yet you say it was sent in 2020! Did you click the link recently and then save the resulting page? It doesn't really matter as sadly there are no offers within.
Your previous reply describes exactly what we need...

Someone who generated the page showing the two discounted prices and at that point saved the page (before pressing a button and successfully checking out).

yes I saved it today I'm afraid, not back in 2020, but by right clicking and save as rather than clicking it and saving the result.  So it seems the action of saving as does something dynamically.  Too clever by half these Ancestry bods - if only they could put as much effort into sorting out the transcription errors and electronic misfiling of various London parishes  ;)

I am one of the lucky ones who used the link on 25th October 2022 and immediately got Ancestry Worldwide for £89.99.  However, several friends I know (and have successfully used the offer in previous years), have not been able to do this.
One stumbling block seems to be the threat that if membership is cancelled ALL stored information, trees, DNA results/matches etc., will be lost.  I have a friend whose membership lapsed (but is still a registered guest), who dares not cancel everything because she does not wish to lose everything and have to start again.
I always cancel membership completely but when I rejoin with the half price offer all my records are still there!
1. Can I reassure my friend that she will not lose all her records?
2. Is there any new advice about getting this half price offer?

My understanding is that when your subscription expires, it becomes a free account, with restrictions on what you can do on Ancestry, but your tree and other information are retained. That has been the case when I have allowed my subscription to expire before renewing in the past. My brother has had a free account - no paid subscription - for a couple of years, with no issues.

My own feeling re the old discount link is that it is gone. Whether it's use came to the attention of Ancestry through this or other forums, and/or they were aware of an increasing usage by subscribers deliberately allowing their subscription to expire before taking advantage of it, who knows.

I used to be able to go to the offer page using the link, whether logged in with a current subscription or not. I can't access it at all now. I tried using the Wayback Machine a couple of days ago. Although it seems that the page had been crawled, trying to access any of the archived copies just results in a "page expired" message on the Ancestry site.

Thank ypu. Phil,
It's reassuring to know that all is retained.  That's still important if applying for one of the occasional discounts, such as those in Black Friday fortnight!
I must be one of the last to benefit.  I got the £89.99 World subscription offer on 25th October and friends who attempted to access the offer within a week of my success stil have not been able to do so!

I've always cancelled my Ancestry subscription before the automatic renewal kicks in. All trees, information, DNA matches etc are retained. Records that need to be paid for are the only thing that can't be accessed. I always download or screenshot everything so can still view records on my laptop. Won't be renewing this year though if I can't get a discount somewhere.

Pleased for you. My sub expires at the end of this month, though we are away from then for a couple of weeks so I won't be looking for a way to renew at a price I can afford till perhaps after Christmas.

Whether its via a way to get the old link to function or phoning them I wont be renewing for more than the £89.99/ worldwide. Its all the budget allows for and I suspect that, if it comes to it, Ancestry would rather have £89.99 than nowt.

Whatever, the choice will be theirs not mine.

Very hit and miss in their deals it would seem!  My sub ran out yesterday but the only offer on the table is 50% on UK records for 12 months (40% for 6month sub).

I'm sleeping on it, I don't fully need world wide but do have some offshoots on my tree in the US.

Even the threat of moving my sub to FindMyPast didn't phase them!

in case this helps those hard up , this old link for 4 months at £5.00 pm for premium membership, still works.
Make sure you are logged out of Ancestry before you click , you log in as part of the process.  remember to cancel subscription before end of 4th month or it reverts to normal sub. You just cancel... leave it a day or so then use the link again!

I just tried that link (as a contact has a sub that expires soon and this may be ideal for them)

It takes me to a page that says Order Summary - there are no items in your cart
There is a link to view Ancestry Memberships but that just takes me to a page showing their current pricing.

Do you have a link that shows the offer ? The above seems to be to check out 'after' an option has been chosen.

If I log in from there with an expired account's details OR create a new account there is still nothing in the basket to checkout and using the 'view ancestry memberships' just shows the current prices .

you would have to look on their subscriptions page.. I cant remember, but it goes to £13.99 after the 4 months, the trick is simple; you just cancel your subscription just before the end of the 4 months, let your subscription lapse a few days, then re renew the £5.00 sub! I did it for several years until I found the £89.99 worldwide sub on here which was fantastic until it died!

If you use the link I gave you don't even have to call them. Just wait until your subscription has expired and you show as guest. Mine ran out while I was using the site, and I was able to use the link immediately.

Last year I got Ancestry on a Worldwide subscription for £89.99.

I have now cancelled my Ancestry Subscription again pending the expiry of the yearly sub on the 10 July..

Used Tree Share in my Roots Magic software to get a copy of my tree.

Did the same for my Wife’s tree.

Also created and downloaded Gedcom files.

Now it is a case of waiting until next week to see if the discount code works for me again.

Conversely FindMyPast would only offer a miserly discount on their £199 for Premium, I did offer £100 but they then countered with £139 for the second tier subs, I passed.

I got Worldwide for £89.99 using the link about three weeks ago.

Do ensure that you cancel the Auto Renewal by completing each presented screen and do check that a confirmation of the cancellation is received by eMail.

I have already cancelled Auto Renewal for next year and in our Account Settings the membership type has EXPIRING in a coloured block.

I’ve just cancelled my membership that runs out in Feb 2024…

I’ve received an email to say that cancellation is confirmed.. I can carryon using it until the sub runs out..

When I use the link to create a new sub it’s only showing the 6 mth ones not annual… am I doing something wrong..

If I’ve cancelled it why’s it still allowing me to use it until Feb… no offer of refund pro rata…

Any advice/ help would be much appreciated.. thanks in advance.

Over the years I have used the link, its only shown the offer when my account has actually expired and is showing me as a 'registered guest' account. I know of a couple of people who have successfully used the link recently but they have only tried it 'after' the sub has expired (though did the cancellation a while before the expiry date to ensure it didn't auto renew).
I have not ever experienced the partial refund scenario though others have.

Try logging out of Ancestry first before using either of the above links.  Once logged out, click on the link, which hopefully will show the discounted amount at the top of the page.  Sign in from that page and it should take you directly to the payment page, showing the amount you need to pay.  I've just tried it whilst signed out and it is still showing the discounted price.  Hope it works for you!

You are cancelling the auto renew, not the subscription itself. You have paid for that, so can continue using it until it expires.
When it eventually does expire, try the link again.

I am only offered a six monthly subscription on Ancestry.com.au. There are no annual subs.

I am miffed because I agreed to autorenew after a special offer and thought I was agreeing to a new annual subscription … but it was only for three months! It was my fault, but I’m sure it wasn’t obvious when I renewed - it’s left a bit of a bad taste, so I’ve cancelled.

Why no annual subscriptions?

Good question Ruskie!
Very annoying indeed, if it wasn’t for the fact my DNA is linked to my family tree I’d not bitter to renew with them!
Perhaps if enough people complain to them they might see the errors of their ways!

I don't know why Ancestry doesn't offer a 12 month sub for Australia.
But why not just use the same link for the world wide sub?
It's a bargain and world wide means the same in UK and AUS!

If it helps, a friend used the offer successfully yesterday to get a 12 month world wide sub.
NB
Her existing sub auto renewal had been cancelled a couple of weeks prior to the renewal date.

She used that until the sub ran out .

When the existing sub ran out, checked her account and could see she was now a 'registered guest'

At that stage, used the link and is now back up and running.

Doing it in those steps, in that order, has worked just fine for years.
