Somewhere in London

Intriguing. The guardsman suggests it's a building with a royal connection, but I haven't spotted a match.

The architectural style to some extent would match St James's Palace, Hampton Court, or some parts of the Tower of London - or Windsor Castle if that's close enough.

The initials above the doorway - are they GR IIII? In theory that could be George IV or (in Latin) William IV, but have I read them right?

Any clues as to timescale?  Looks 1960’s or 70’s from clothing

The date would be around 1957-58. There looks to be some sort of shop? to the right if that helps.

Can’t see a shop.  Looks more like a sight seeing location & I’m inclined to agree with Arthurk re Royal connection

The coat one of the ladies is wearing is what we used to call a Duster coat.  Very popular in 1960.  My mum bought me one - my friends thought I was pregnant!!

There looks to be some sort of signage above the window.
Lots of places in and around London used to have military guards including museums, bank of England and the Royal mint. I can't find a picture for this one though.
The children are known to me so the photo can be dated fairly accurately.

Is it the public entrance to the staterooms at Windsor Castle? If I remember, you walk round the back of the castle and there are steps up to the exhibitions.

No it isn’t  ::) I just saw a modern photo and nothing like it. I just recall the queue and the steps. ;)

Looking at photos online, the flat-topped sentry box is only seen at St James Palace?

I'd noticed it was different from the ones at the Tower, but wasn't sure if this was a location thing or just because it was 60+ years ago.

I've just done a bit of a street view round St James's Palace, though, and it seems to be mostly brick - ours looks like stone.

Yes I agree with that Arthurk.
I have been trawling round images of various palaces and other places of interest, Lambeth Palace seems to be the nearest looking stonework with the differing colours.
CaroleW said that it looked like a site-seeing attraction, I think I would agree with that, the stairs are roped off perhaps for entrance and exit. Maybe it was a one off exhibition?

According to Wikipedia's article on the Queen's Guard, these guardsmen would (now) only be found at royal residences, which would rule out Lambeth Palace. Until 1973 there was also a detachment at the Bank of England (the Bank Picquet).

I agree with the thoughts about an entrance/exit etc.

JenB,
I talked myself out of it - no problem.  :)

We went when Meghan’s wedding dress was in the exhibition.
