Hello fellow researchers,
I'm wondering if anyone can help me think of resources where I might find the marriage of William McCulloch (farm labourer / lumberer) to Ann Wales (washerwoman / whitening) - I know that their eldest children were born in Ireland (but not where). Given their names not being typically Irish it's hard to say whether they were born there or whether they just lived there for a time.
I believe the name McCulloch is associated with the Plantation of Ulster and I'm guessing Antrim is the most likely county they would have been in but this is guess work at the moment.
William McCulloch and Ann Wales are listed on the 1864 Scottish marriage bann of their son John - father deceased - and again mentioned in a Poor Law Relief request of his from Nov 1913.
Their son John, b. circa 1845, Ireland was a miner his entire life and seems to have lived most of his life in Slamannan / Limerigg area of Linlithgowshire (modern West Lothian).
Any help or advice on resources would be very much appreciated. John's birth and their marriage unhelpfully occurs just before BMD records in Ireland are available so I'm not sure where to look and parish records haven't thrown anything up for me yet.

If you go to https://www.swilson.info/sdist.php and search on Wales, it shows in map format, the distribution of the surname in Ireland in the mid 1800s.
If you go to https://www.swilson.info/surnamexref.php, and try variations of McCulloch along with Wales, it will indicate civil parishes where two surnames appear, again mid 1800s or so. Shankhill Parish, Antrim seems to be a possibility.
Remember, the tools are only indicators, but can be useful in narrowing down potential search areas.

If you go to http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameSearch#
and type Wales in surname box, Antrim in County box and Shankhill in Parish box, it returns 4 Wales entries from Griffiths Valuation. You can do the same for McCulloch/McCullough and variations.

Ann can be Agnes or Nancy or even Hannah. Wales can also be Wells and McCullach, McCullagh, etc. which makes lots of variations to search for.
Do you know what religion the family might have been?
Have you checked all possible census records to see if a more exact location is given?
What about any siblings of John that went to the same area in Scotland?
Did the parents also move to Scotland?
Civil registration of births, deaths and Catholic marriages began in 1864 (quite a bit after John was born). Registration of non-Catholic marriages, including those in a registry office started 1845.
Catholic & Church of Ireland churches followed a parish system but other religions did not (Presbyterian churches in Presbyteries, Methodists in Circuits, etc.) There are surviving pre-registration church records but you'd need a more exact location to start checking (not all are online).
If you haven't see this website would be worth having a look to see lots of resources-

Thank you both so much, these are excellent resources I had no idea existed.
Yes, the timings are all slightly annoying for BMD records.
I believe they were Presbytarians as the son married in the Scottish church, but that may have been owing to conventions of the location rather than strict conviction so it's impossible to be sure. I'll go and have a dig with these resources to see what I can find. Thank you again for your suggestions.
