Title: COOK at Leverstock Green 1851-1861
Post by: Heatha on Saturday 08 May 21 12:03 BST (UK)
Hello, I can find baptisms online for Leverstock Green but not burials. Can anyone help? I am looking for burials from 1851-1861 for members of the COOK family.

In addition the abode is given (for some of the baptisms) as Bel Colney. Can anyone tell me where Bel Colney is?

Not sure  :-\

I looked at the baptism entries for Leverstock Green in 1850'ish and picked on Sarah Ann Seabrook - parents William and Martha - baptised 27 January 1850 - residence Bell Colney.  The same family on the 1851 census have the address as Balcony, Leverstock Green.  The description of the Enumeration District doesn't help.  :'(

1861 census has the same family in the same area - RG9/839 folio 108 page 11.  On the same page is Cox Pond Farm and this NLS map shows the location of Cox Pond Farm.

From http://bacchronicle.homestead.com/1851census.html

POPULATION FIGURES AND SPREAD BETWEEN THE THREE PARISHES

As can be seen from the table and pie-charts the total population for the Village of Leverstock Green in 1851 was 746  spread between 155 households. This was split between the three parishes unevenly, with the greater proportion  almost half- being within St. Michaels.  As the original Manor of Westwick, focused along Westwick Row was also within St. Michaels this is hardly surprising, with larger numbers of dwellings other than the major farm houses having developed either along Westwick Row or alongside the green in the central area of the village to the north of the Berkhamsted Highway. (Today's A4147)

These figures for the village were to remain fairly static until the post-war years and the development of the Newtown, with the census of 1931 showing a total figure of 804.  Much higher numbers were reported at the latter part of the 19th century when Leverstock Green parish was first formed and covered a very wide geographical area including Nash Mills, Apsley and present day Adeyfield as well as Leverstock Green Village.

Those members of the population within the parishes of Abbots Langley & Hemel Hempstead were generally based at the major farmsteads such as Leverstock Green Farm, Northend Farm, Wells Farm,  Cox Pond, Woodlane End, Tile Kiln  & Bennetts End Farms.  The major exception being the meagre houses which had grown up in the Tile Kiln and Belconey (or Balcony)area largely to service the growing Brick & Tile Industry.

Yes - my interest was purely because my daughter used to live in Leverstock Green, AND I'm nosy!   :-X

Are you looking for any particular burial?

Now I am looking for Elizabeth Cook aged 30 and her infant son Joseph. They were alive on 8th February 1860 but dead before 31st March.

Thank you all so much for all the information regarding Belcony. I now assume that I have located it on the old map between the main village and Cox Pond Farm. That is excellent. I had realised that it was near the once named Masons Arms by trawling through information found on The Leverstock Green Chronicle. I am still short of two burials but the rest is sorted.

Apologies for a delay in replying but I have just spent about three hours in A&E. Don't worry - all will be well if I rest up !

Once again, thank you, everyone who contributed. You have made an 'old gal' very happy.

FindMyPast has images of baptisms, marriages and burials from many Hertfordshire parishes. Unfortunately for Leverstock Green they only seem to have images of baptisms and marriages. The burials for LG are only transcriptions from the series "England Deaths & Burials 1538-1991" and there appears to be a gap between 1859 and 1862.

Thanks. Burials in Leverstock Green appear to be poorly represented. It is rather frustrating! Also, on FindMyPast Leverstock Green is not an option in place names.

I guess eventually a visit to the relevant records office is my next option when I can get there.

It might be worth checking with HALS if they actually have the records for those missing years. It is strange that there is a small gap in what is on line. It could be that the records have been lost or badly damaged.

HALS have a look up service,so if you can't gete there they will do the work for you.

Seems to be £18 for 30 mins of their time.

They say they have LG burials from Feb 1850- Feb 1972.

Thank you. That is excellent news. It is certainly a lot less expensive than a hotel room and all the travelling!

A big thank  you to everyone who has helped me.
