Title: POWELL family from Leeds
Post by: steve albin on Wednesday 12 May 21 03:26 BST (UK)
Hi Folks,

Re: Harry Powell b.1883 Leeds

For years and years I have been trying to the DOB of my grandfather Harry Powell.
His mother was Annie Powell so we do not know the father's name.
His brother, Thomas Brown Powell was also born out of wedlock in 1881 but at least I have his birth certificate which confirms they lived at 67 Portland Street, Leeds.
Like all of us here with such a challenge I cannot begin to explain the lengths I have gone to find his DOB over the years.
Annie Powell married a Edward Lyon and she had a third son named Edward Lyon but poor Harry Powell is a mystery.
If someone can help me I will wash their dishes for a year  :) :) :)
Cheers
Steve

Is he the one with grandparents in 1891& 1901?

Have you found him on the 1939 register?  What birthdate does he give?  I can only see 2 Harry Powell entries in Yorkshire - one gives 1882 & the other 1884

Hi CaroleW,
Many thanks. I should have explained he came to Australia in 1912 to be with his mother. Only to be sent back to the UK in 1914 and ended up in Flanders in May 1915. I have tons of information on his Army papers, Attestation papers, medal rolls, all in pristine condition but still no DOB. So frustrating  :) :) :)
He was gassed and sent to serve the rest of his time in the UK until he returned to Australia in 1919. I tried some time ago to see which hospital but not to sure how to look up where he was hospitalised. There is quite a bit of information on his Medal Index Card, once again in pristine condition, but I do not know what to do with this information. It appears he was in a couple of Labour Corp's from 1917 onwards.
Regards
Steve
