Hope I'm not pushing my luck as I've already had a lot of help in here.
Photo we think is possibly c 1920s, Fred on the left and no idea who his pal is.
He joined the Navy in 1916, served all through WW1 discharged to the Reserve in 1924, recalled in 1939 and served another 3 years.
If anyone has time to give the photo a wash 'n' brush up, I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks

Thanks japeflakes, as ever your time and skills are appreciated.
Fred was a lovely man and the photos we have are special.

Pushing my luck again :-)
Though what we have is a scan, I am unsure about what happened to the original photo.
Another family member also has a scan, which I think is a slightly better resolution and he has sent me this snip of just the ship name on Fred's cap.
Is it possible to manipulate this to see if any of the letters become clearer? I tried but (surprise!) wasn't too successful - though I think I can make out 'APE' within the word which may relate to one of the ships on his service record.

As you were ... I have had a good old firkle round the web and now have a 'possible' answer.
I believe the cap name is CAPETOWN. His service record shows he was assigned to HMS Capetown from 11th April 1922 to 10 Oct 1924.
This page shows that it was based at Bermuda at various times and the last entry on that page was 22 March 1924.
I still need to ascertain where it was on 28 May 1924, as I have a document that shows that Fred was definitely in Bermuda on that date. He was converting to Catholicism and I have a 'conditional' (as he had been baptised as Anglican as an infant) baptism cert from St Edwards RC Church in Hamilton, Bermuda.
I've only had the scans of the photo and baptism for 15 years - lol, I am slow but I do try to get there in the end.

Capetown looks right

Thanks japeflakes. You must think I am crazy not to have made the connection before (and you'd be right!).
I am so pleased that I asked my in laws if it was ok to scan all these bits n pieces all those years ago. It does take me a while to puzzle things out, but at least I have the images of the relevant documents.
- which is just as well as a lot of it 'disappeared'.

Thanks for both of those Pat :-) I really do appreciate the help I get on this board. There's a lot of photos in my old folders that were scanned years ago and I am having yet another attempt to sort them and document them properly.
Shame there is no indication of the name of the other man, looks like he was a Marine. Maybe someone will spot this and say that's our Grandad! (or even G Grandad). Stranger things happen :-)
