When Elizabeth Gleane (of Saxlingham, Norfolk baptised 1636) made her will
https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/5111/images/40611_310330-00770?pId=725669
in 1657 she named a sister
Maude Gleane, my eldest sister
now the wife of John Sharbury (added, now think this is Shawbury) of Rayne Thorpe (of the county aforesaid which is Norfolk)
1. where is Rayne Thorpe?
2. Can anyone see a marriage for Maude Gleane to John Sharbury?
3. Can anyone see a death for John and a subsequent marriage for Maude to Robert HORNOR
Robert died 1686 - so the last marriage must be between 1657 and 1686

Can't find her marriages but, using Genuki Norfolk towns and Parishes, there is an entry for Rainthorp which reads "see Flordon". The entry for Flordon doesn't mention Rainthorp so not sure what it's all about.
-
hmm. that is weird isn't it.
Flordon is very close to Saxlingham Thorpe and Saxlingham Nethergate.
-
Rainthorpe Hall, near Tasburgh and Newton Flotman?
Flordon is nearby.
-
That looks promising, there is a footnote mention of the name Shawberry on British History online. Although not in the right time span.

A genealogical site has reference to Edward Bedingfield marrying Mary Shawbury, daughter of John Shawbury of Rainthorpe Hall, 1600's?

Quite a few wills for people of “Rainthorpe Hall” on the www.nrocatslogue.Norfolk.gov.uk site, but not John Shawb*ry

Yes, it's frustrating!
Confirming the marriage
23 Dec 1663, Flordon
Edmund Beddingfield, gent, and Mary Newce
Does it say she was a widow?
References to Messrs Newce and Beddingield at Rainthorpe, but John is elusive!
-
it says she was Mrs Mary Newce
-
Ah, there you go. There is a record on the Norfolk site that says she was a widow.
Will of Thomas Newce of Rainethorpe Hall, Norfolk
21 May 1653

Not sure yet if it is the husband of Mary married again 1663.

So, the Shawbury’s weren’t actually of Rainthorpe Hall in 1658 then.
I suppose there might have been a bit of an area surrounding it that was also referred to as Rainthorpe. But still, where is John? And as I said in my opener he has to have died sometime after 1658 to allow Maude to marry again.
And I know she did because of the inheritance of Irstead Manor which passed to the Hornor family through her. Plus she was young enough to have at least one son to the second marriage.

Is this of any interest? http://slatters.org.uk/history/bowdens/bk/n1713.htm, Dave

Thank you. And yes, there are a great many similar summaries.
I am busy picking my way through everything.
Hence trying to find Maud’s marriages. Which that source also lists but without any dates or locations.
It seems to be one of those facts “everybody knows” . And I believe them, from the wills, but surely there is a PR somewhere.
Oh well.
