Ruth Olivia GOSLING widow in 1939
1895–1974
BIRTH 3 MAR 1895 • Talaton, HONITON, Devon, England
DEATH 16 JUN 1974 • of Rose Cottage, Talaton, HONITON, Devon, England
=====
On the 1920 passenger list she gives her address as Holcombe Hall, Dawlish, Devon, occupation: Maid.
I wonder if this is also the address [below] of her employer?
On this occasion she appears to be travelling with a Francis FRASER born about 1864 Occupation: Director. address: Grand Hotel, Rugby, Warwickshire.
Can his FRASER family be identified please?
Who is she with on the other New York arrival records?

Francis Fraser born where?
Why do you think she was travelling with him? They have different addresses and the incoming passenger list has a lot of people travelling singly?
-
She also travels out in 1919, first class, with a Christiana Mary Benn (64) and Christine Crowther (18). They are listed as no occupation, whilst Ruth is a maid
Added - NY entry records show Mrs Benn is grandmother to Miss Crowther, and Ruth their employee. Contact is Harrison Benn of Greystone RoI. Mrs Benn's last place of residence in England was Shipley, whilst Ruth was from Talston
-
She went out on 3.11.1920 & returned 24.12.20
What is your connection to her?
-
27 Nov 1919 she went out to NY and is bracketed with
Christiania Mary Benn age 64 no occupation
Christine Crowther age 18 also no occupation
Ruth, the maid
-
On the inwards list in NY, Christine is now Christine Mabel Crowther
Both Benn & Crowther give contact as Mrs Hilda Truscott, Holcombe Hall
Ruth Olivia is single. Gives nearest relative as Mrs Gosling, Laurel Cottage, Talston, Ottery St Mary
added, sorry Mabel, you must have been adding while I was typing, I didn’t get the red box

How can she be a widow in 1939 when she was born & died as Ruth Olivia Gosling?
Where does she fit into your FH?
-
Definitely not a widow in 1939
-
The 2nd page of the 1920 passenger list says her passage was paid by Mrs. Benn and she was going to the Narragansett Hotel in Providence, Rhode Island.

CAROLE
My family have a fond connection with 'Aunty Ruth' as several of my older siblings were evacuated from London bombing to live with her in Talaton, East Devon. I believe that my mother [an East-End teacher] had arranged this evacuation herself and not as part of the general Government arranged initiative. This might indicate that Ruth was somehow already known to my mother pre-War. Whilst I was a post-War baby, I did visit Ruth on a teenage cycle tour of South West England. My brother recently told that Ruth was much-travelled as Maid/companion to a 'Lady Someone or Other'.

I understood that Ruth GOSLING was married to a man called GOSLING and was a widow, but this may well be a child's invention to explain the absence of any man in the Talaton home.

many thanks for finding the Holcombe Hall connection.
All I need to establish now is the correct employer for Ruth and the TRUSCOTT, BENN and CROWTHER families!
