Hi to you all replying to information on George Murphy first so do you think George is buried at the old Kildownet I wasn't sure as there is no headstone also there is a headstone for Catherine Murphy and Patrick which I have visted I have seen the death records of George Murphy but Mary Murphy née Gallagher I really don't know much about my Great Great Grandmother I know George was from Saila and they lived there I can't find there marriage cert and can't understand why I can't find her death certificate if Mary death wasn't in Achill I've checked castlebar
It's just a mystery
Thankyou to everyone who has sent information

You haven't confirmed if the George Murphy I found in 1901 census is the correct one.
Possibly Mary died away from home- whilst visiting family or in hospital for example. Westport Workhouse would cover Achill-
https://www.workhouses.org.uk/Westport/
Another possibility is that her name is either incorrect or she was registered with a different Christian name.
Have you traced all known children after 1871 to see if she registered deaths (or births of their children, especially children of any daughters)?
-
Hi
Sorry I meant to reply about the 1901 census yes it is the right George Murphy living with family the age was wrong as he was 80years of age he died in 1902 and his wife had already passed away my family said she was called Mary however I have looked for other Christian names with the surname Murphy but can't find her death certificate as I far as I know the last child was James in 1871 my Great Grandmother was his sister Catherine Murphy I still have family living in Achill who have gave me a lot of information only that George and Mary were buried in the old Kildownet Cemetery which I couldn't find the grave or records when I last visited Achill
Thanking you kindly for your reply

I posted and deleted because I couldn’t find the children’s births but found James here

I can’t see these births on Irish genealogy https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/
They are shown in All Ireland, Select Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911 with parents George Murphy and Mary Gallagher, Achill
Catherine 7th March 1864
Anne Murphy 1 July 1866
Margaret Murphy 27th April 1869
James Murphy 27th June 1871
Perhaps they were not submitted - maybe Mary’s death record is missing too.

Yes I found them and just deleted/amended the post.
I was looking in the wrong registration district ::)
-
Hi Thankyou
I was also looking for George and Mary marriage certificate I know George was from Saila I'm sure Mary nee Gallagher would have also lived nearby on the island I really appreciate your help
Catherine Kilbane
-
I just checked and Newport registration district was included in Westport after 1886. That is where I was going wrong.
If George and Mary married before 1864, which it looks as though they did, you would be searching for parish records as registration of civil marriages did not begin until 1864
-
Catholic records for Achill - marriages begin in 1867 :-\
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1035
-
I noticed that earlier records sometimes are registered in Newport and then in westport I used to get very confused also if the catholic marriages starts in 1867 and George and Mary got married before this which I think is the case there will not be a record of there marriage and which is a shame
Thankyou for your reply

Marriage for a Catherine with father also George Murphy- or was there more than one George Murphy in the same townland?
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1889/10728/5911354.pdf

Hi thank you. Yes that's definitely another son John I missed that also the son pat is George Murphy son as I know he was the only George Murphy and was from saula /saila this is great that you have found this information and very sad that the son pat tragically drowned so now I there are at least 6 children born and Mary was still alive after 1871

Catherine’s marriage was posted earlier so yes it is her.
I noticed this death earlier - too old for your George but perhaps father/uncle.
He is 80 yrs old in 1874.

Hi yes
That's definitely Mary and George daughter Nancy marriage to Neil Kilbane also on the bottom of the page is my Great Grandparents Brian Kilbane and Mary Mctigue from Dooniver it's so weird they were both married the same time I have found a few relatives certificates on the same page
Thankyou
Catherine Kilbane
-
Hi also
Think George Murphy father was also called George so I do think the death certificate was his in 1874 as it also says Mary Murphy was present on his death

February was the favourite month for Catholic weddings in rural Ireland.

There may have been more than one Mary Murphy in Saula at the time so impossible to be sure if the Mary informant for the 1874 death was the wife of George Murphy who died in 1902. It says that George was married so wife must have died after 1874.
Found another child of George Murphy & Mary Gallagher- Michael! Although his age at various times say he was born c1865 or so, I think he was actually born before 1864.

Found snippets of two articles about son Pat who drowned in 1886-
Irish Times, 10 Apr.1886: The bodies the two men Patton and Murphy, who were drowned yesterday [at?] Achill have not yet been found.
Dublin Daily Express, 12 Apr.1886: … the treacherous … [sea?] engulfed Martin Patten, the owner of the boat, and his companion, a young man named Murphy; but, thanks to the gallantry of Mr Lockhart and his brave crew, the woman, an unmarried daughter of Pattern’s, was rescued …
Also, we already knew there was a son John (he appears in 1901 census) before his birth was found.
-

John was born 1874 so Mary's death must have been 1874 or later.
Pat's death may have been reported in a local newspaper.
-
George's wife Mary must have died between 7 June 1874 (when she registered birth of son John) and 31 Mar.1901 (date of 1901 census). Still doing searches and probably found a daughter to the George Murphy who died in 1874.
