Title: Looking for the Talbert family in 1871 Census
Post by: ED2005 on Wednesday 02 June 21 13:26 BST (UK)
I first looked for this family a few years ago in the 1871 Census, then went off in a different direction... forgot about it... and have now returned to try and find the family in the 1871 Census. I wondered if anyone might have any ideas where else to look! Details are: William Talbert (gardener) born c1837 and Agnes Edwards (domestic servant) born 1841, who married in 1863 at Seaton Smithy, Arbroath. By the time of the 1871 Census I would expect to see the couple, along with the illegitimate son that Agnes gave birth to earlier in 1863, namely John Edwards (my gg-grandfather)... so he'd be 7 or 8 years old. Also, by 1871 the couple would have had another child Elizabeth Margaret Jane Talbert, who was born in 1866... so would've been around 5. Another son, William followed in late 1871, so I wouldn't expect to see him. I have the family in the 1881 Census living at 28 Lillies Wynd Arbroath. So my question is... where were they in the years between the marriage and 1881? I'm very surprised that they weren't still in Arbroath, but can't seem to find them. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

I just need to find out where Springfield Ballwen is now!!!
I presume that's an Ancestry transcription.

FindMyPast has it as Springfield Bellview 5.

And William's birthplace not as Dunicken but Dunichen, which is closer to the usual spelling, Dunnichen.

I take it you know about William leaving his wife and going to Glasgow, returning to Dundee and the subsequent court case. The Dundee papers give quite a lot of detail, including a letter from William to his wife.

The 1881 census lists stables etc at Bellevue, and the next few households are in Springfield Terrace.

Thank you everyone for all of the above information. I didn't know about Springfield Bellevue... I was guessing it was something to do with Springfield Park, which I Googled... and thanks for the information regarding Dunnichen as well. And to GR2... I was aware of divorce proceedings which I'd come across in the Arbroath papers, but I never knew William went to Glasgow, or anything about a letter! Very intriguing!! The reason I have revisited all of this is because I recently discovered an entry in the Arbroath Kirk Sessions in 1863, in which Agnes Edwards revealed that the father of her illegitimate son, John, was John Whitton, with whom she'd also had a child three years earlier. John took his mother's name... hence my name! The 1871 census information fills in John's early years as I had no idea where the family went (nowhere as it turned out!)
