I'm attempting to verify a Jane TILLEY who was the second wife of Joseph TILLEY - married in Thorpe Langton, Leicestershire on January 9th 1837. The census returns for 1851 and 1861 both declare that she was born in Fenny Stanton around 1816. The GRO inbdexes for her eight children confirm her maiden name as Tilley.
Joseph died in Medbourne in 1863 after which Jane disappears from the records.
There are a number of paradoxes here. Joseph's mother, Hannah Beldam, was born in Fenny Stanton in 1779. She married Francis Tilley, from Thorpe Langton, in Fenny Stanton on July 29th 1803. One of the witnesses was a John Tilley - so far not connected with the Leicestershire family -who married Hannah's sister, Ann.
Joseph was born the year after his parent's marriage but was baptised 300 miles away in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.
Freereg notes that John Tilley and Ann Beldam had a daughter, Susannah baptised in Fenny Stanton on October 16th 1803 and a son William on July 2nd 1803. Is it possible that Jane was another of their daughters?
Many thanks
Alan

Thank you for the tip, Magslote. Sadly it doesn't answer the question posed in my original post.
However there is another entry about the same time which adds an extra potential bit of intrigue. An infant, Hannah TILLEY, was buried at the same church in Fen Stanton on August 23rd 1819. No other family details but as noted previously the parents of Jane's future husband, Joseph, were Francis and Hannah TILLEY. A connection there perhaps?

How do you account for any/all of the eight children in the 1871, and later, Census records?
As an older widow Jane would be likely to live at some time with a son or daughter.

Hi Trish
Joseph and Jane were in Medbourne in 1861. I couldn't find anything local for Jane after Joseph died in 1863. I started looking for signs of their offspring and came to the same conclusion that Jane emigrated with her son Henry to America - although haven't found a date there. I would therefore agree with your assessments.
I have to admit that Jane is not in my direct line of Tilley interest - that lies with her husband Joseph. One of my main interests though is the tracking of consanguineous marriages - we have over 100 of which 35 are between first cousins. Tilley is not an uncommon name in the East Midlands anyway - there are 569 currently in our database. This particular segment has given rise to a number of curiosities.
Cheers Alan

Have now seen Jane's headstone, Glidden, Iowa, USA. Died June 25th 1905. Headstone is Jane Tilley but an accompanying newspaper article quotes her (I believe mistakenly given all the other evidence) as being born Jane Kelly.

Hi Trish
I would also suspect that your surmise that Jane was the daughter of John Tilley and Ann Beldam. That makes Ann's sister, Hannah, her mother in law.
However, it also pushes the question back one generation:
What, if any, was John Tilley, Ann's husband, to Francis Tilley, Hannah's husband. And the, if any, how close a relation was Joseph Tilley to his wife Jane Tilley?
Cheers Alan

... and a Francis Tilley was a witness when John Tilley married Ann Beldam in Fenny Stanton in December 1802

Hi Allan,
I've been away so will ponder this when I can :)
