Title: Ceylon: marriage certificates
Post by: queencorgi1 on Wednesday 09 June 21 12:13 BST (UK)
Does anyone know how/where to obtain marriage certificates for British couples married there during the colonial period? I have checked the India Office records and they don't seem to be included.

Have you tried the British Armed Forces  and Overseas Banns and Marriage Index on Findmypast?

Also try the Kabristan indexes https://kabristan.org.uk/kabristan-indexes/sri-lanka-indexes/126-sri-lanka-formerly-ceylon-marriage-records-indexes

Hi there, yes, FindMyPast was my first thought! I have the date of the marriage (3 May 1895) from a newspaper announcement but the groom was a civilian, not in the forces, so no luck -- and as I say, not in the India Office records. I did think those covered Ceylon but evidently I was wrong.

Hi Shaun, absolutely maddening -- I was so excited to see that link but annoyingly this couple got married at St Andrew's, which isn't in that list!

Did you search Findmypast? The heading reads ‘and Overseas Banns and Marriages’ they  cover Chaplains returns as well, not  just Forces.
