Title: The mystery of George Heber LANGSTON
Post by: brigidmac on Thursday 10 June 21 17:47 BST (UK)
Researching children of John LANGSTON b 1822 London England
Children born between 1852 + 1872

George Heber Langston b1860 on some trees but not with siblings

on 1860 or 1870 census
Ruled out him being a half sibling because father John Langston was on censuses consistently with wife Clarinda and some of the other children born before and after George H
John franklin LANGSTON b 1852 Louise Matilda  b,1869
A brother Jacob born 1863  has same middle name Heber

Trees also have a different mother Elizabeth Ann FREESTONE as being married to John Langston with daughters Emma Louise b ABT 1853+  Elizabeth Ellen Langston b 1858

It doesn't make sense unless John Langston had two wives at same time

But there are photos of him with two brothers Isac and Jacob .

I thought I'd found him on a census which named both parents

Yes it's been confirmed it was a pluralist marriage

Elizabeth Ann FREESTONE married age 15
was mother of Emma . Elizabeth Ellen + George

She divorced John Langston ,& not with him in 1860
So where is she and  those 3 children ?

She remarried Lars JENSON  before 1864 .
she's with Lars in 1870 and possibly Elizabeth Ellen + George H using JENSON surname
Or children from his previous marriage ?

No sign of George Heber LANGSTON until later years he's a farmer .

1915
He applies for a passport so there's an example of his handwriting, his signature. physical description and a photo

Also a connection to the FREESTONE family George FREESTONE who has known him for ,55 years verified his identity .

He probably never made it to Australia as found him in 1920 with wife Mary Ann LANGSTON m/s neilson

+ A 1939 obituary listing other children's names was a great help too

So still missing census 1860 1880 1890

Could he have travelled abroad without a passport before 1916 ?

Revelation
George Heber langston was born September 1860
So he wouldnt have been born after census

1860
Found Elizabeth and emma 8 and eliz 3
All with relatives all under surname FREESTONE
So maybe divorced before she knew she was pregnant again

Presumably this is same George freestone  on george heber passport application

Mystery resolved from a family story written by one of George Heber LANGSTON s grandaughter and sent to me .
It's very long so just a snippet

From after separation from John Langston
Only mentions two children ...omitting Emma aged 8 in 1860 .....

Thanks so much sandra
Thats a lot to go through

By the way i was wrong about emma Langston b 1852 being a daughter of Elizabeth freeman  + using freestone surname on the 1860 census
Emma freestone b1852 was Elizabeth s sister

Emma Langston was born to clarinda philips and john Langston and was with them in 1860 as mary langston
Also known as emma mary

Im not sure about george being george jenson in 1870

There were more excerpts about George Hebert LANGSTON s childhood which is what I wanted to know
He lived with his grandparents
Was taken back by his father
Ran away and education paid for by someone else
Eventually moved near his half brothers
I.ll try and clip that story

( Sorry Sandra I did already have information about his descendants but wasn't sure it was the same man or how he fit in til I learned of his mother's brief pluri marriage to John Langston
Here's George Heber LANGSTON s signature

And a pedigree chart for george Heber langston

Looking into the ancestors in England
Is the next step

george Heber was the only sibling  who i couldnt link to the others in the years between 1860 and 1910

They  had a tendency to marry young and several times have big families and
Live long lives

*Obituaries of georges siblings and children show this

My previous answer disappeared
The news clips about the uncle

George FREESTONES life story is incredible.these pioneers went thru hardships

Although some were polygamous many waited til death of spouse to remarry
Some of the girls had several husbands too

One advantage is there are more ,4th cousins and multiple  DNA matches connect descendants to their English ancestor . I think many Americans find it hard to find the first immigrants in their families.

Its littlebn s bloodline not mine but ive never before  come across anyone with 28 thru lines to 3rd/4th cousins (halved and removed) from a 1822 ancestor

there are no other records of another George HODNETT of a similar age + it fits with the family story of living with his grandmother

I haven't checked if there are any other candidates for the George JENSON living with Lars JENSON new family
So both candidates are still in the running
