Hello everyone,
I am interested in finding out more about my 3rd great grandparents William Candy and Harriet Ellett and their children. William and Harriet lived in Dorset, Somerset, then lived in Gloucester where they had most of their children before moving to Melbourne, Australia.
Although William and Harriet lived most of their lives in Somerset, England, William died in Collingwood, Victoria, and many of their children migrated to Australia. I was hoping that some of the Australian connections might spark someone's interest or memory.

They also had an eight child who I don't know the name or sex of but was born in 1837 in Gloucester before dying on the 25th of April 1837, also in Gloucester.
In particular, I am interested in learning more about:
* I noticed that Thomas Candy and Elizabeth Ann Lack's first child (Clara Jane Candy (1856-1857)) was born and died in Melbourne, Australia, however, Thomas's later children were born in Gloucester and Surrey. I was wondering if someone would help me find immigration records for Thomas and his wife.
* George Candy is of particular interest, he was placed in the Asylum at Beechworth in the early 1870s for "Religious mania". Prior to that he was working in Collingwood as a stonemason. His wife, Eliza later entered the asylum at Beechworth.
* Mary Ann Candy (1820-1849) married a Mr William Huggins (1819-1866). Their second eldest child Jane Huggins (1844-1888) married a Mr William Hyam (1847-1924). I was hoping for any information about their children. Mr Hyam did remarry after Jane's death to a Kate Elizabeth Whitton (1861-1923).
* Harriet Candy (1823-1885) and her husband Henry Morris Rogers (1821-1909) and their child Henry Albert Rogers (1856-?). I would like to find out Henry Albert's date of death.

As stated in another post Eliza Candy arrived Geelong/Melbourne in 1855 by herself. If she married Thomas in 1848 were there any chn born b/n 1848 and 1855. A Thomas Candy b 1827 passenger per "Queen of Sheba" Melbourne to Adelaide 1852. ( PROV Vic Outwards passenger list 1852-1923)
Thomas Candy and Elizabeth Candy dep Melbourne 1857 to Hobart per "City of Hobart 11" ( same source as above.
Thomas Candy and Mrs Candy dep Melbourne per "Morning Light" to Liverpool Dec 1858.(source as above)
I was wondering if Thomas arr Australia soon after their marriage in 1848.Elizabeth is listed on 1851 census UK age 22 Married living with Mary Lack (? her mother). so we could narrow down Thomas arr in Australia to between 1848 and early 1851.

Hi Phil,
Regarding George CANDY b.1834 and wife Eliza nee GARDINER.
Ancestry holds details of their asylum admissions.
If you have not seen these, I am happy to provide details.
Noteworthy is that one of their daughters, Harriet Jane CANDY was also a patient at Kew Asylum which was where her mother was admitted in 1890, prior to the Beechworth admission in 1904.
George was first admitted to Yarra Bend Asylum in 1872 and later to Beechworth in 1901

Again, not being sure what you already have, there is a monument at Melbourne General Cemetery which memorialises members of the CANDY family.
Location Independent. Section A. Grave 4
I am happy to type the list of 10 individuals mentioned if you need it.
There is a lot of religious verse on the monument also.

1871 UK census shows Jane and Wm Hiam (sic) living 2 Anchor Yard Gloucester with dau Jane age 11 months.
1881 UK census shows William with Jane, then Jane age 11, Wm age 8, Ellen age 6 all living Gloucester.
1891 UK census shows Wm with wife Kate,and Ellen 16,Thomas 10, David 6, Mabel 1 all living Gloucester.

I have Thomas Candy's arrival in Melbourne on the "Glen Huntly" on the 9th Jan, 1850. Your information about Eliza Lack (Elizabeth Ann Lack) arriving in 1855 corroborates what I have too. Their first child I have listed is Clara Jane Candy (born 17 July 1856 in Collingwood, died 19 Jan 1857 in Collingwood, Australia). Now that I have a think about it, I remember that Melbourne had a big stone boom around that time with many houses of that era having decorative stonework on top of the roofs.

This "Argus" page you linked from 1850 has an advertisement for Thomas and his older brother William's Stonemason business in Collingwood. William arrived in Melbourne on the 21st of October 1849.
I didn't have Thomas Candy's travel to Adelaide on the "Queen of Sheba" in 1852. After a little bit of looking online I found that stonework became very popular in Adelaide at the time so it makes sense that he would travel there for work. I also didn't have the travel to Hobart in 1857 either. I knew he was there around the time as their son Alfred Charles Lack Candy was born there in Dec 1857.
This is all very interesting in piecing together the events and building Thomas and Elizabeth's life story.
With regards to the monument at Melbourne general, I have visited there previously but not for many years.
Now I will move on to George Candy and his family.
I have got the details about George, Eliza and Harriet Jane's admissions. Very hot water with the law is a bit of an understatement!
I did already have that information about Mary Ann Candy and William Huggins and their children. I was wondering if there was a bit more info around on Maria Huggins (Their youngest daughter) and Richard Cook her husband.

Married after Banns. Neither signed, mark only. Witnesses David Cook his mark. And Jane Hiam signed.

In 1881 according to census, Richard Cook is a boarder in Birmingham with a publican named John Hollis. The hotel is the Horse’s Shoe (or Three Horse Shoes)in St Martyn’s place. His occupation is stone sawyer. He states married and born Gloucester. Two other married stone workers are with him there.
In 1891 He is a widower living at 1 Ashfield Terrace,St James and St Paul Gloucester a freestone sawyer born Gloucestershire. No others of the share his address.
In 1901 Richard Cook lives at 62 Thornleigh Rd Bristol. Aged 56. Head. Married A freestone sawyer born Gloucestershire.
Also Sarah, wife. Aged 43. Born Gloucester

Hi Sue,
The details for Richard Cook and Maria Huggins match what I have up to a point.
They were married in 1866, I have the same certificate.
The census details for 1871 match too.
But then what you have for 1881 and 1891 don't match what I have. I have that Maria dies in 1920 and Richard dies in 1911. Neither remarry.
It's good to receive confirmation that there are no children.
For Maria Huggins, I have found one who lived as a girl with her aunt Ann Mayer who kept a lodging house. But I cannot find this Ann Mayer in my tree and am unsure if the two are even related. I am quite sure this Maria Huggins is the correct one, her mother died a few years before this census was taken.

It is quite possible my research is flawed here, but I just based it on Richard's date and place of birth and his occupation and possible marital status.
Familysearch.org has a couple more details about what I have thought to be the second marriage for Richard COOK, the one to Sarah.
It shows Richard states father as William which contradicts David as given in the marriage to Maria.
Other than that, a lot of factors line up!

Is it at all possible that Richard COOK did remarry, but not as a widower as stated? ::)
In 1911 the Richard COOK I have cited as re-marrried to Sarah, is seen with Sarah, his wife, 2 children and his intellectually enfeebled niece.
All other factors line up, but I guess there could be two men with co incidental details, maybe..... :(.

For your interest, I think Maria is living with this aunt in 1861.

Looks like Eliza the wife of Edward Richard was nee HUGGINS.
The child was therefore the daughter of Eliza’s sister. More niece by marriage to the head of household, Edward.

Hi Sue,
I think you are correct in suggesting Maria Huggins was staying with Mr Edward Wallop and Eliza Huggins in 1861.
Going down this rabbit hole a little further I found I had two Eliza Huggins listed as children of John Huggins and Anne Bond.
1. Eliza Huggins.
Born 1822 in Gloucester, died 1863 in Gloucester.
Married 5th Nov, in Gloucester to Edward Richard Wallop.
We are pretty this Eliza is the Aunt of Maria Huggins and belongs in the family.
2. Eliza Anna Huggins.
Born 15 March 1822 in Bristol, died Oct 1906 in Bristol.
Married to James Nunan in 1862 in Bristol.
My first thought was that I had the death date for Eliza Huggins number 1 incorrect and the two women were the same person with her remarrying James Nunan. However, I found that Edward Wallop died in 1865 and now I am about 70% convinced that Eliza Anna Huggins number 2 belongs with a different set of parents. If you wanted another thing to have a look at I would love some evidence confirming this one way or the other (If possible). I will continue looking at it myself too.

Hi Phil,
I cannot say with any certainty either way about Eliza HUGGINS with James NUNAN.
There is not a registered marriage and a tree online (always approach with caution!) states this Eliza HUGGINS was first married to James LANE. On this certificate, her father is James HUGGINS, a servant.

Yes,
I suspect the author of the online tree which I mentioned above, who has attributed parents James HUGGINS and Ann BOND to the Eliza HUGGINS who married James PLANT has made an error in research.
The Eliza HUGGINS who married WALLOP and probably died in 1863, is their daughter and Maria's aunt I think.
Quite a lot of the HUGGINS name around!
