There's a box of photos of my grandfather's taken between 1920-1940 mostly undated and no names .IT was marked" unknown to the family now" , back in 2011
A lot are of his fellow ship mates ..identifiable by their caps as to which ship they were on and I will donate to a maritime museum
I can maybe identify a few of his siblings and their children from comparing with other photos .
I'm reluctant to just throw them away ...maybe someone on a photo restoration or identification course could use them as practice
This one as a clue as the studio in GLASGOW is named
Any guesses as to the year ?

Could be 1907 then -

The first one, with the tie pin behind the tie knot, was common in the post WW1 and into the early 1920s. I have a photos of my father with that type of neckware circa 1922.

There is a website for unidentifiable photos, but I can't recall the name.
Not much help, Zaph
-
Thanks everyone .
Ive got some photos with family i do recognise but my grandmother s labelling system is hard to get used to
She put the name behind where the person is in photo .
So right to left becomes left to right
Also i know some are not allocated correct name as photo pof myself with younger sister is labelled as being older sister with me !

This little piece is worth keeping with them

:-my grandfather had 7 brothers born between 1882 & 1910 in Cambuslang near Glasgow
He was born 1903 .
There are photos of his sisters in the box but none of the men in photos are labelled
My grandmother may not have met the brothers so wouldnt have been able to label them .
But i think the navy became his family
So a lot of the photos are sailors ...none of his brothers joined navy .
I ll post more later .

Have you considered putting a few of them up on one of the several "old Glasgow" websites (such as Lost Glasgow; Glasgow Memories; etc., etc), where memories of old places and people are shared?
-
As Gadget said, the collar bar was fashionable in the 1920s.

Thanks for the extract gadget and the advice
Could it have been earlier ...photos taken before war ?
I.ll certainly donate them to a lost glasgow site if they want pictures of people and for these three if i can rule out the possibility that they are the Cambuslang brothers from Burn Butt's

Sorry jape flakes i missed your post and very useful link to photo studio dates
Of course canning street would be one to have no known dates of photos
1907 seems a bit early
They were a poor family so i think there would have to be special occasion for photos
The father and eldest brother died in 1910
-
One photo is a kilted military man
If this is the brother who died 1916 we could look for more family likeness should i add here or on a separate post ?
-
If they are Macdermid brothers this could be the one who died in world war 1 age ,16
What do you think ? Does he look that young and any resemblance to the ,3 others
It's from a postcard embossed bit might say THE Royal
-
+ heres another state studios 125 canning street Glasgow
Another brother ?
3 of them emigrated in 1923
But youngest 2 born 1907 +1910 i think too young to be in these photos if taken that late
-
He could be in his late teens - say 16-19.
What is the badge that he has in his lapel?
-
I forgot to mention the state studio photos are very small .not much bigger than passport photos about an inch in width ( 2cm).
Gadget i may post full military pic on another board and add link
Glad you made me look close tho i cant see shoulders upper right arm has one band and left sleeve has a strange cross ....on closer inspection its two crossed rifles which fits with walter in royal artillery and the latest pic looks like pic 2 so brothers is beginning to look like a possibility .im looking for a photo of my grandfather as a young man to compare .
-
Young kilted man had his photo taken at The ROYAL STUDIO On Vincent street they were known to operate between 1903 & 1913 then may have become known as Flashlight Photography
Thanks for Japeflakes usful guide of studios

It's the one you put up in Reply #13, immediately before my reply. He's not in uniform.

Sorry gadget I thought you were referring to kilted man
It looks like it could be a thistle I've tried zooming in but it goes fuzzy
I managed to post on Facebook lost Glasgow page re the military man to post on here I have to remember what techniques I used to reduce the pic
will try again

Here s a link to the kilted " brother" the more I look at him the more I think he has a resemblance to my grandfather' + dad when they were young

It just seems logical that he would have pictures of his brothers as well as his navy friends and I got ages wrong before the one who emigrated to USA in 1923 with his sisters would have been aged 21 b 1902
The youngest brother joined them in 1929 age 19
One was born 1891 another 1894 their respective weddings 1920 & 1921 could have been the photo opportunity.
