Title: Ancestry DNA test
Post by: Kerrill on Saturday 19 June 21 08:14 BST (UK)
Hi,
In the past I have registered my three siblings Dna test with ancestry because they do not have computers and are not able to use them so I made them a e mail address and a free account on ancestry and made myself the main person to use their Dna. But I have just tried to do the same for a friend and get a white page up on Ancestry and can no longer register or make myself the one who can access the Dna any help would be very welcome.

Did your friend register with an e-mail address when the DNA was submitted?

I sent for the test and then gave it to him, he then asked if I would do the computer side of things. So once he has sent it back I would then get a reply saying his results are ready to view (on the email I set up for him)

Can you access the other DNA accounts?

Add - if you've followed all the correct procedures and you still get the white screen, I'd contact them.

Yes I made myself the Collaborator on all three.

Very odd

If you've followed all the correct procedures, I'd contact them.

How long ago did  you register your siblings' test?

Things have changed due to data protection and the system is no longer the same.

The person taking the test has to have their own Ancestry account (can be a free one) in order for the test to be processed.  When that has been done and the submitter has been notified, you can take over and manage the test at that stage.

From what I read, the OP was setting up an account - i.e. pretending to be his friend.

Let me put it this way................  if someone who is PC illiterate like my siblings want to find out about the family past and want to do a test how can they possibly do that without someone doing it for them ? keeping in mind that they don't have computers or smart phones and if they did they would not have a clue how to use them. A friend asked me to get him a DNA test and confided in me he did not have a PC and could I do the on line stuff for him and give him a print out of the results .  Surely someone else has had the same problem ? or does everyone say no sorry I can't do that for you .

I think it's perfectly possible for you to do that. Kerill.   How would they know that you weren't your friend. Then, if you log in as your friend, you can make yourself manager. I am manager for  3 accounts on Ancestry and others on My Heritage.

I also see quite a few of my matches are managed by others.

I think it's a glitch or, maybe you might have made an error in entry. why not contact Ancestry to ask what has happened?  Alternatively, your connection might have dropped as you were entering info. Have you tried again?

I do think that they might recognise your IP address and realise that it is the same as info already known to them and maybe there is a cut off point down the line somewhere as to how many instructions they will take from the same IP address.

Why not go to your local library to log in to Ancestry to set up all these different accounts and then move them over to your own account once the dna reslts are received.

How are you trying to do this?  Are you using their names and your address?  Maybe Ancestry (and the others) do some kind of check that the person is living where they say they are?

The whole point of this is not to share personal data between people which is exactly what you are trying to do without going via the recognised system of taking ownership because you have receeived authorisation by the owner through the site.  You must expect them to make some checks otherwise how is our personal data protected.
