Hi all,
I am wondering whether someone might be able to help me locate further information relating to the above, who was my 'great-grandaunt' (according to Ancestry!). Phyllis was born on the 7th November 1909. I recently posted a 'help' request in respect of my great-great grandfather, Francis George Woodhouse. Francis was Phyllis's father.
I have managed to establish that Phyllis travelled to Australia, arriving in Adelaide on the Empire Brent in May 1950. I have been able to obtain a copy of her 'application for an assisted passage to Australia under the United Kingdom and Australian Government Agreement'. Does this mean that Phyllis emigrated to Australia?
I found a death record for a Phyllis Kathleen Woodhouse who died in Shrewsbury in 1972. Having obtained a copy of the probate record, I know that this is not 'my' Phyllis.
I cannot seem to locate any further records for Phyllis after her arrival in Australia (seems quite commonplace with this branch of my family tree ::) ) - is there anyone who might be able to help me with establishing whether she saw out her days in Australia? ???
Thanks so much in advance.

Births Dec 1909
Phyllis Kathleen Woodhouse Woolwich 1d 1165
Have you found her on the 1939 register? I cannot see an entry matching her birth reg
-
The Phyllis Woodhouse who travelled to Australia in 1950 travelled from Glasgow. She was a midwife and her last address shown was Bideford which is Devon. She was 40yrs old
The Phyllis Kathleen Woodhouse who died 1972 was born 1919 - not 1909
I have been able to obtain a copy of her 'application for an assisted passage to Australia under the United Kingdom and Australian Government Agreement'.
Does this application show her as Phyllis Kathleen or just as Phyllis?

Hi Carole,
Thanks for your messages. Yes, I have found my Phyllis on the 1939 register. I have also found her on the Midwives Roll and the Nursing Register - she qualified as a midwife and then later a district nurse. As I mentioned in my initial post, the Phyllis Kathleen who died in 1972 in Shrewsbury is definitely not ‘my’ Phyllis. The Phyllis who died in 1972 was married and the maiden name was ‘Rudge’ I believe. I don’t believe ‘my’ Phyllis married - she was certainly still Woodhouse when she went to Australia.
‘My’ Phyllis lived at 44 Cross Street in Devon before she went to Australia. This is on the Midwives Roll, etc. and this matches with the address on the application for an assisted passage to Australia under the United Kingdom and Australian Government Agreement. She was indeed 40 years old when she went to Australia.
The application shows her as Phyllis Kathleen.

Hi,
Re her father.
It is quite possible for the hand writing to be almost a scribble. I have transcribed many longhand documents from 19th century official records. "Thomas" can be mis-read as "Francis" and vice versa. To me it is one of the more frequent mis-reads for the given names aspects of longhand transcribing.
T v F; h v r; om v an; a v ci; with clear agreement on the 's'.

Thanks JM. I completely accept and appreciate that there may be errors with transcribing records, etc. but I have a number of documents relating to Francis from 1901 onwards…? Unless all of those records have been mistranscribed, that must have been the name he was using - whether that was the name he was actually given, I really am at a loss. I can find hide nor hair of him before 1901.
I have attached Phyllis’s baptism record.

Thanks for attaching the image. It is in a more modern handstyle than the one that can confuse T and F etc.
That baptism has RA, as in Royal Artillery, and the barracks at Woolwich.

Do you have this 5 page record from National Archives of Australia? It has the name and address of an aunt in Adelaide

Thanks Matthew. Yes, that’s the record I have - it’s because of me that it’s now available ;D I’ve looked into it a bit and have established that the ‘aunt’ is actually a cousin (Mrs E M Lee would appear to be the daughter of Phyllis’s mother’s sister - Lee is the married name, Gibbs is the maiden name).

Hi, looks like E M Lee died around 1953
there is a notice in the Adelaide Advertiser 24.5.1953 regarding Auction of 16 Water St
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/48301539?searchTerm=e%20m%20leed
If we could find more information on the Niece Mrs EM Lee, it might be able to find Phyllis, If you feel that the niece is deceased, could you let us know her given names?
Cass
Just found Elsie May Lee 16 Walter St , funeral notice 26.12.1951 Adelaide Advertiser
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/45786048?searchTerm=16%20walter%20street

Thank you so much Cass. How on earth did you do that?! I was going to say that Mrs E M Lee was Elsie May. Her maiden name was Gibbs.
Is there any way of getting hold of information relating to Elsie’s estate? Just thinking that if she left a Will, that could give me some information…

Hi, Sorry I dont know much about SA wills, but that would be a good idea, maybe a google search might help to find where the records are kept.
I found the notices by searching TROVE for the address on the shipping records
Had a look on Find my past, they have details of Elsie death recording her age as 69yrs , a widow , late husband name Alfred Lacey Lee. I tried to find details of Alfred but had no luck
Good Luck with the search
