Title: 1861 census Edinburgh - poor copy
Post by: brooksburns on Tuesday 22 June 21 20:05 BST (UK)
Please help me read the occupation of John Hutton age 13, 5th line down.  Plenty other lines given for context - his father John is a compositor, the man further down is a police constable.

Better copies aren't currently available from Scotland's People.

Could the first word be Bookbinder?

Not sure about the second - my first thought was Forwarder, but I'm not at all certain of that, and I don't know if that would fit with Bookbinder.

Added:
might be possible - the 1921 list of occupations gives it as another term for tally clerk:

I've had a look on Find My Past.  Bear in mind that these are transcripts not images.

1861 says occupation is Bookbinder forwarder

1871 and 1881 say occupation is Bookbinder

Having never heard of this (and being curious  ;D), I asked Auntie Goggle and found this:

Well spotted, JenB - I completely missed that when I went to that page and found the other meaning of Forwarder.  :-[
