Title: A possible date please for Marian
Post by: BumbleB on Wednesday 23 June 21 17:40 BST (UK)
I'm hoping that I haven't asked this question before!  Forgive me if I have  :-[

I'd be grateful for an estimation of the date that this photograph was taken.  My mother is the eldest of these three girls, and she was born in 1911.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How does 1920 sound?

Many thanks.  So about 9 years old.

How strange that the title of this thread appears to have changed!  Marian was an only child!!!

I would say she was around 9 or 10 years old, so early 1920s.

I agree that she looks to be about 9 years old.... so about 1920.

You could always change it back again, BB.    ;)

Thank you for the colouring, PatBot.

OK, so now I've got a probable date, I can start to work on who the other two girls might be - Milner or Appleyard  :-\

Looking through my files, it appears that a relative suggested who the two younger girls might be.

Does this sound right - so my mother was born 1911 and the two suggested girls were born in 1913 and 1916 and were her cousins.

Looks good to me  :)

That would make the youngest 3 or 4. I'd say that was about right  :)

Apologies for returning to this - another question!!

Is it possible/probable that these three girls were bridesmaids?  I've found that a sibling of the parents of the three girls married in 1919.

The flower baskets do suggest it. Also, the headdresses.

Thanks - it was a sudden thought  :)

I'd not noticed the baskets until you asked. It reminded me of my cousin, who was the flower girl at M & D's wedding. She carried a basket just like those, although it was 1931.

I'm assuming that the photograph was taken a little while after the marriage ceremony (state of the flowers!) - at least I hope so  :-\

Here's the one that I was thinking of

(clipped from a tiny pic and enlarged).   I do have a properly restore pic on other PC

Yes, very similar.  And I know that the 3 children appeared together in other photographs (now that I've looked at my archives).

I can see Daffodils in one basket - was it a spring wedding?

Also I note the two oldest girls have matching bodices that have been slipped on over the frocks.

If it's the right one - 17 April 1919.

Could this be a communion photo for the 2 older girls?   There appears to be tulle/veiling across the
right arm of the girl on the right perhaps attached to the cap at the back.  The added vests are
interesting as they are only worn by the 2 older girls - some religious significance perhaps?

Thanks for the suggestion aus*jen but I'm not convinced - reason being that as well as being from two different families they were also of different religions.  My mother being brought up CofE and her cousins brought up as Baptists.  I do think that the girls were bridesmaids or flower girls at an aunt's marriage in 1919.

C of E confirmation would be 12-15 normally so 1st communion would be after that and thus not likely.

I would say that bridesmaids in April 1919 is correct.

I think I was about 14 when I was confirmed.

Thought it was possibly a communion if Catholic as 1st. communion was always at 7-8 years and
made before Confirmation at age 13-14.  BB has stated that religion was not Catholic. :)
