Title: Does the house called Kinggilly in 1948 still exist in Nairn?
Post by: Keith Sherwood on Tuesday 29 June 21 15:16 BST (UK)
Hi, Everyone,
This is my first ever post on this board, but may I ask whether there is anyone with local knowledge of Nairn who could tell me whether a house called Kinggilly still stands?  I lived there in the very late 1940's with my mother and father  and as I was only a toddler at the time I have no memory of where exactly it was situated.  My 95 year old mother often speaks warmly of the place.  Apparently the raspberries in the kitchen garden were a magnet for a certain 2/3 year old.  Many thanks,
Keith

Forguette,
Oh, I thought that nothing had come up when I googled the other day.  I'll have another look, thanks for the heads up!

That Kingillie with pictures seems to be situated in Inverness, though I realise now that I was entering the house name as Kinggilly, with an extra "g", and a "y" instead of the "ie" ending.  And what a handsome place that one must be to stay in.
So now I have found the Kingillie house in Crescent Road, Nairn, which is a listed building, but unfortunately no pictures or photos, just a written description!

...Kingillie on the map just around the corner from the Scottish Exotic Animal Rescue centre.  Now what could these exotic animals possibly be in the county of Nairn...?

Hello Keith,
Welcome to Rootschat

Have you used Scotland’s People ?

The way I have found old properties of interest is to look them up in the Valuation Rolls on SP.
From that you can get a name of who lived there, from that you can look them up in in the census and look at the area it is in and pattern of house names which you can then use for your detective work to see if it still exists.
You can look for it on Google street view.

This was how I found an ancestors family home in Dalkeith, MidLothian.

The street is now numbered but originally were named houses on the genteel outskirts of the town.

Weirdly I had walked past it several times when visiting my friend and walking to pick my God daughter up from school   :)

Good luck

Thanks very much for your informative reply, Oldfashionedgirl,
And yes, I have been on Scotlands People in the not too distant past, but found it rather costly.  However, I might feed a few more coins into the meter and have a look at those Valuation Rolls.  I think when we were there Kingillie was being rented out to us by The Army, as Dad was an officer in the Highland Light Infantry at the time...

Wow! Jool,
It does look rather a forbidding place, with all that crennelation...
Mum loved living there, and apparently the story goes that when I was sent out to pick some raspberries for the table, she came across me after rather a long absence, quietly counting aloud to myself, "One...two...Keith's mouth...one...two..."
And she felt fairly certain when I spoke to her the other evening that the garden may well have been built over by now, over 70 years on, as it appears to have been.

Impressive looking house.  This is as close as I can get to it on current day streetview, you can just see the crenellations through the trees.

Lovely story about Keith the raspberry muncher  ;D

ADDED:  If you "walk" around the corner towards the seafront on to Marine Road on Streetview you can see a bit more of the roofline over the wall.

A photo here taken in 2019 with fewer trees obscuring the view.

Those are wonderful, Jool, thanks so much...
I'll get the images up on Mum's IPad when I go to see her tomorrow evening.  She'll be delighted to see them, stirring old memories...

Hi Keith,
I live in Kingillie House, in the basement flat. I'll happily take some photos you can show your mum and post them when I have.
