Lizzie was the wife of Benjamin Watterson and they are on the 1910 census in Philadelphia with their children Julia born 1897, Jennie 1897, Benjamin born 1900 and Lillie age 2. Benjamin is a fireman.
In 1920, the family can't be found but there is a Benjamin living by himself, widower, fireman. I think this is him, which means Lizzie died 1910-1920. Would like her death certificate to verify her maiden name and parents.
Later on, Julia married George Washington Roche abt 1920. Jennie aka Virginia married firstly a Mr. Gee, abt 1920, divorced him, married William Digney June 27, 1931, and lastly John George Spencer. Funnily enough, Virginia used surname Gee at death in 1980 in Long Beach, California.
Lillie married Charles Hallowell bef 1930 and is alive in 1940. Possibly died in Ohio but not sure when. Possible dod June 11, 1961 but not sure of this.
Thanks for any help

Benjamin appears to have had some issues and was sent to prison for 8 years in 1911. Those issues reappeared again, and he was sent to prison again in 1922 for 15 years, this time.
The two clippings below tell all that needs to be known. The news clipping state he lived on Boudinot Street, same in 1920 census.

In the 1920 census, he is listed living on Boudinot Street.

Goodness, that is alarming. Hope his wife didn't do something to herself after Benjamin was sentenced in 1911. Explains why family is not together in 1920. I notice that Benjamin says married in 1930 but is still listed as a fireman. I think Benjamin is on the 1940 census, out of prison, if it is the same Benjamin. Now says widowed and living at the same address in 1935 - if he was , and it is the same Benjamin, then he got out early. And then there is a Benjamin who died in 1952, with the same address as in 1940. No parents listed so can't be sure it is the Benjamin that I was following. But I think likely.
That is likely daughter Lillian in the Children's Home in 1920 as age and circumstances fit, although it says parents both born Penn.
I wonder if Benjamin's misbehavior made the papers in 1911.
Thank you RJ137 for your help.
Peggy
I see your updates about Lillian. Thank you so very much. That would definitely be her death in 1955. They seemed to be back and forth between Ohio and PA. I see divorced on her death record. I am thinking Lillian's mother was probably Lizzie Averell although it was spelled differently on different records, even as Abed. Thanks again!
Now I see the marriage record for Virginia and it does say mother Averill. Great.

Yes, Virginia did remarry to John George Spencer but seems a weird situation. Why did she use surname Gee when she died. Of course, John did die Jan 4,1966. Still....
I have never found Virginia's marriage to Mr. Gee so don't know his first name. Must have been 1919/1920 ish as son Alfred was born abt 1920, being 10 on the 1930 census.
The death notice for Benjamin confirms the relationship to Virginia.

So sorry oldohiohome. I see it was you who updated info about Lillian Hallowell, and Benjamin, and Virginia. Thanks so much.
Good pickup about Lillian Everall on 1920 census, same residence as Julia Watterson. Has to be a relative of her mother's. Wonder if Everall is maiden name or married name?
I see Julia was divorced before her death in 1959. The girls seemed to have trouble with their marriages.
And wow, you found Mr. Gee's first name. Great.

Here's an interesting news clipping from 1932?
The Philadelphia Inquirer
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Sunday, April 10, 1932
pg: 41
Men Seeks Son and Daughter
Virtually alone in the world, as he asserts, Benjamin Waterson, 1921 East Huntingdon street, this city, yearns for tidings of his son, Benjamin, and daughter, Lillian, neither of whom he has seen or heard from for sixteen years. He is of the belief that they are now in another city.
-
That is very interesting. He must be out of prison.
I have searched very hard for any newspaper articles about Benjamin‘s first offence in 1911 but have had no luck so far. Thought it might mention if Lizzie was still alive at that time.
Thanks RJ137.

Looking at all this information, I had a sudden thought. When Lillian Hallowell died, she gives her mother's first name as Lillian. On the 1920 census, with Julia Watterson, in the same household is Lillian Everall, age 35, divorced. Could this possibly be her mother, with wrong age, and wrong first name, and last name spelled differently? Would explain why we didn't find Lizzie's death 1910-1920. Perhaps she was trying to distance herself from Benjamin and the tragic situation.
I know it says Lillian's parents born Pennsylvania which is not true, if she is Lizzie, mother of Julia, but it says that same thing for Julia's parents which is also not true. Benjamin was born Ireland and so is Lizzie, as per 1910 census, as were both their parents.
I know it is a wild thought but maybe it is the case. Benjamin says in 1930 he is married, but in 1940, says widowed. If we can possibly rely on that info, Lizzie, possibly Lillian, died 1930-1940.
-
On the other thread - reply 24 - marriage of Virginia Digney (11 May 1934) it gave the name of the mother as Elizabeth White, maiden name Averill - mother lives Engelwood (possibly Inglewood) California. Housewife.

Death Date 24 Oct 1980 Los Angeles - Mother's Maiden Name Watterman.

There is a Lizzie Averill who married a man named White in Pa in the 20s or 30s, I forget now. Too early here to start working on it.
As for Lillian Everall with Julia Waterson boarding in Phila in 1930, I thought it might be Lizzie also. You don't know if it was the landlady who gave the information.

I did notice that Benjamin was living with Samuel White in 1940. Also noticed Ellen Watterson in the same household but not sure of her connection. If she was 63, means born about 1877, married at age 25, so about 1902 to a Watterson. The only sibling of Benjamin's that I don't have a spouse for is Joseph but there is no indication that Ellen is Benjamin's sister-in-law.
At first, because Benjamin Watterson that I was following (son of James Watterson and Margaret Hurl ) arrived in Philadelphia in 1895, with wife Martha, to his sister Mary Jane Steele, I was thinking she was Martha Elizabeth White since the only Benjamin I could find after that was the one with wife Lizzie. When Virginia married John Spencer, I thought she must have her mother's name backwards when she said it was Elizabeth White nee Averill. Now I am thinking I was misled by the 1895 arrival of Benjamin with wife Martha or there were two Benjamins. Thinking misled by wife's name Martha in 1895. I should have Benjamin's marriage record to Lizzie Averill in Camden, NJ on June 8,1895, any day now as I ordered it in early May. Hoping it has his parents names on the record. I am thinking Lizzie's first marriage was to Benjamin Watterson and then to James B. White. But there must be also must be a connection to the Samuel White that Benjamin is living with in 1940 and at the time of Ben's death in 1952 (same address).
The only Eliza Averill that I find in the correct time frame is born 1886 in Lurganagoose to Robert Averill and Mary Ann Semple, with grandmother Sarah Averill present at Eliza's birth. But there is no Margaret or Mary Ann in Lizzie's daughters.
Now that you give me Samuel's parents, I found his birth in Gortmillish, Armoy, District of Ballycastle, on May 6, 1874.
Update - yes there was a Robert White born to John White and Martha Brown on May 16,1870 in Gortmillish. And William born May 23,1879 in Gortmillish. And Catherine Sept 14, 1876 (this would be Cassie).
John and Martha married 1867 and he was a widower then. Both fathers had first name John.
I find the death of a John White in Armoy in 1885 but... wife is Eliza. ??Martha Elizabeth??

Samuel immigrated from Co Antrim Ireland on SS Umbria arriving July 1893. ( The White surname was interesting and again coincidence - wonder if Lizzie was first married to Everall/Averill and then to Benjamin Watterson ?)
Sandra
Another mystery was who was Ellen Watterson ?
I believe that Ellen Watterson on this census with Samuel was most probably Ellen Hyde Wray who married John Payson Watterson in 1892 Philadelphia.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:ZWQR-XF2M
The 1910 census states she had 7 children and 6 survive. (not 2 as the 1940 was transcribed as stating) I believe all the children were adopted.
Florence Ruth Watterson 1893 - Jane Hyde (Jennie) 1895 - Joseph Fergusson 1898 - David 1899 - Hamilton John 1901 - (Lewis in 1908 after the death of husband John)

Good morning, Sandra. You have done an amazing job of sorting out a complicated puzzle. I can’t find John P Watterson and Ellen on the 1900 census. If she married in 1892 she wasn’t born in 1877 as per her age in 1940 since she would only be 15. But if she married in 1892 at age 25 as per the 1940 census, that means she was born 1867. I see the children are spaced out every couple years so it seems like they were biological children as opposed to adopted. What is the indication that they were adopted?
Thanks so much for your amazing work.
Peggy
-
All the children were biological children and belonged to John and Ellen - after John died - all those children were adopted by other people. :)
Ellen was born 1875 on both the 1910 and 1920 census - census ages can vary, depensing who gives the information.
Sandra
-
IF Lizzie/Elizabeth Averell/Everall was born 1882 as per 1910 census and married 8 June 1896, there would also be a concern with the age on that one ?? That will be an interesting marriage certificate.
Sandra
-
That must’ve been hard on the children to lose their father in 1904 and then be adopted thereby essentially losing their mother. Is there any indication of who adopted the children or is it a matter of looking for them on the following censuses?
If Ellen was born in 1875, she was a young bride. Do you have her death certificate in 1946?
I am wondering who were the parents of the John Watterson who married Eliza Jane Ferguson?
-
The children were all adopted/fostered or lodging with different families.

I was lucky enough to find a tree on ancestry with Elizabeth Jane Ferguson on it who married John Watterson in Philadelphia. The tree had her parents on it along with all her siblings. Unfortunately it does not have parents for John Watterson who this tree says was born in Ireland abt 1825. I would love to tie him into the rest of my Wattersons if I could. I have a John born 1821, 1822, 1823, 1824 and he might be one of them. Elizabeth Jane died in 1870 and John is on the 1870 census with the children but I don’t see him again. Perhaps his death record would give his parents if we knew when he died. Can anyone find him in 1880 or find his death?
-
A few entries that came up yesterday. There were 2 enumerations of the 1870 census - on the first one (13 June 1870) John was born 1820 - Post Office Byberry - ret farmer and the second enumeration (16 November 1870) shows him born 1825 - 4520 Post Office - Frankford - no occupation
1865 city director John Waterson - farmer - 648 Fkd ave. Fkd.
1870 census seems to show John M Watterson h 4520 Frankford
1870 city directory - John M Waterson - 4520 Fkd, Fkd. Millinery.
1871 city directory - John M Waiterson (per transcription - Waterson on image) 4520 Fkd, Fkd. Philadelphia. Millinery.
1875 city directory - John M Waterson - 4520 Fkd, Fkd. Philadelphia. No occupation given.
One to discount - John Waterson listed 923 Cantrell Street was 42 years old in 1886 - various entries for this one.
Nothing to positively identify this one - 1879 city directory - John M Waterson - 64 Adams Fkd - Labourer
or this one in 1880 city directory - John Waterson. 152 Unity, Fkd
The son John Waterson appears in City Directory 1890/1891/1892 - 1210 Potts - occupation printer. Plus various entries following years at 1026 Olive
Sandra
-
This may be a ;possible sighting of him - right area ? U.S., Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865 for John Waterson birth as of 1 st July 1863 - 44 years - but further along someone has made a comment - "says he is 47" - labourer - born Ireland. 7th Prec 23d Wd, Frankford Philadelphia.
Sandra
-
You may have found John in Civil War registration - if 44 he would be born 1819, if 47, he would be born 1816. I do have a John Watterson born 1816 to Joseph Watterson and Mary Woods but who knows. He does name his first son Joseph but then again, the one tree that I found with Elizabeth Jane Ferguson on has her parents as Joseph Ferguson and Mary McIntyre. And first son could be named after her father.
I wonder if we could narrow down John's death by other means. Mary Ferguson nee McIntyre (Elizabeth Jane Watterson's mother) died Dec 24, 1876 in Philadelphia. If she had an obit which mentions John Watterson, we would know if he was alive then.
Another thing I noticed is that when Mollie M. Watterson aka Mary McIntyre Watterson, died in 1900, the funeral was held at the home of her aunt Mrs. G. Kennedy. I found the death in 1916 in Pittsburgh of Mary Ferguson Kennedy with parents Joseph Ferguson and Mary McIntyre. Has to be same aunt. It is very doubtful John Watterson would be alive then but if he was, maybe Mary Kennedy's obit would mention him. Some Wattersons lived to age 100. Mary's death certificate says she was born May 1, 1849. However she was 6 on the 1850 census with her widowed mother Mary Ferguson whereas Eliza was 22 which makes Eliza born 1828 rather than 1832 as usually quoted. Eliza is not on the 1860 census with her mother but neither is she with John, that I can find.
-
Another good obit to see if it mentions John Watterson is the death of his son Thomas H. in 1889, if there was an obit for Thomas.
-

Another thought. IF, only if, John is the son of Joseph Watterson and Mary Woods, his brother was Alexander Watterson that we researched before and Alexander died June 3, 1867 in Philadelphia. If he had an obit that mentions brother John we would have confirmation of parents. Alexander's wife Mary (maiden name unknown) died July 23, 1873. I don't think we had an obit before for Alexander.

Can you link the thread on Alexander ?
Are you going by the information on the anc tree - joseph Waterson 1773 - 1845 and Mary Woods 1788 - 1857 ? With a John Waterson born 1816 ? )
Sandra
-
I have done a search so I could link it and I may be confused with the Alexander that we researched who died in 1976, son of Joseph Watterson and Margaret Jane Patterson. The 1976 Alexander was a chauffeur who died in New York and was a brother to Margaret Helena Watterson.

The 1867 Alexander was a son to Joseph Watterson and Mary Woods. He is mentioned on this tree https://www.ancestrylibrary.ca/family-tree/person/tree/158012972/person/222113793409?ssrc=&queryId=10b360b9d2d64602bfdbfd8a6c9fd20f&ml_rpos=2
Alexander and John are also on the Clarke tree and that is a very reliable source . At this time, we have no idea if this is the John Watterson that we are looking at, married to Elizabeth Jane Ferguson

I haven't found daughter Mollie aka Mary Watterson in 1880 or Thomas H., but I do find John P. age 14 and his brother Joseph 16 in the household of John Snyder as a nephew. In actual fact, they would be nephews to Joseph Ferguson who is a son-in-law to John Snyder. What relationship does that make them to John Snyder? Anyway, what I'm saying is that I am thinking that John Watterson, their father, also died between 1870 and 1880 or why would the boys be with their uncle Joseph Ferguson? And where are Mollie and Thomas aka Harry?

I now have a newspaper announcement for a marriage license between Lily E. Averell and James B. White but it says both of them are from Chester, PA. That raises doubts but Virginia's marriage record in 1934 does says that her mother is Elizabeth White nee Averill.

Thinking that possibly the 1923 marriage of Lily E. Averell to James B. White is a red herring, I have looked for a different Averill/White marriage, also the death of Elizabeth White anywhere in the USA, and the death of Lillian Averill/Everall/White anywhere anytime in USA after 1934 when she was in Englewood and I don't find anything.
I don't find John Watterson or his son Thomas H. in 1880 anywhere in Philadelphia. Thought maybe they were together.
Peggy
-
I phoned Cedar Hill Cemetery main number to ask if John Watterson might be buried with his wife Elizabeth Jane Watterson nee Ferguson. When they go out to the cemetery next week, they will give me a call if John is buried with her. I gave them the names of all three family members - Elizabeth Jane, Mollie McIntyre, and Thomas H. Here's hoping we find John.
Peggy
-
Cedar Hill Cemetery already called me back! John IS buried with Elizabeth Jane, his date of burial Jan 9, 1904. I wonder where he had been hiding. Joseph is also buried there, burial July 26,1883. I am so hoping that we can find out John's parents if he has a death certificate or an obit. So to recap, there is Elizabeth Jane, Mallie aka Mollie, Thomas H., John, and Joseph.
-
Uh, oh. The John who died 1904 is John Payson Watterson. How disappointing is that!
-
I have been thinking more about the marriage of James B. White to Lily E. Averell in 1923. Since the newspaper article said they were both from Chester, PA, I am thinking this marriage has nothing to do with Lizzie Watterson nee Averill. There is quite of pocket of Whites in Chester Co., PA, one of which was Margaret Jane White married to John Watterson that we researched a bit ago.
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=850007.0 Hope this link works.
I tried to find the couple in 1930, thinking they were perhaps residing back in Chester but I have not had any luck. But there are a gazillion Whites in Chester.

Well, I have great news along with some more questions. First of all, the marriage arrived for Benjamin Watterson and Lizzie Averill and it was June 8, 1896( some records said 1895) in Camden, NJ. Both of them were resident in Philadelphia. Benjamin's parents were James Watterson and Margaret Hurl which means he is the same person who arrived in Philadelphia in Sept 1895 with wife Martha. Same old question - are Martha and Lizzie the same person, and were Benjamin and Martha really married at that time. Martha was age 22. Benjamin age 23.
At time of marriage to Lizzie, he says he is age 21 yr 3 mo. and this is his first marriage. Is it? No marriage was ever found to Martha. But Benjamin was born in 1870 so he was 26 in 1896. Lizzie was also age 21 (close to Martha's age) and it was her first marriage as well. Her parents were Isaac Averell and Margaret Sands and Lizzie was born Ireland. Her address before marriage was 1019 Vine St., Philadelphia. I wonder if she was there in 1880 - she wouldn't be there if she was Martha who arrived in 1895.
Can Lizzie's death be found now that we know the name of her parents? Maybe we can find her birth which according to marriage record should be abt 1875. I was just looking for her birth and did not find it, either under Lizzie or Martha.
But making progress.
Peggy
-
The only marriage that I can find for Isaac Averell is to Margaret Jane Workman in 1874. I don't find an Eliza born to them officially but there is a family tree which says they had a daughter Eliza Feb 10, 1881 which would make her 15 at time of marriage.
Isaac also had a daughter Julia in 1878 according to that tree who married Andrew Griffen. There was an Andrew Griffen mentioned when Ignatius Watterson emigrated to Boston in 1909 but the word No is written below Andrew's name. This Andrew was in Scotland in 1901 and Illinois in 1920. Ignatius was Benjamin's brother. Ignatius Watterson and Isaac Averell were both from Mullen, Ballinderry.
There is another tree on ancestry with Isaac Averell which does not have a daughter Eliza but there are big gaps between the listed children where Eliza could fit.
-
Isaac is still alive in 1911 in Ireland. So is Margaret Jane, says married 34 years (close), had 8 children, 6 living.

I reviewed the 1910 census with Benjamin Watterson and Lizzie. She is 28 so supports a dob of Feb 1881. Married 13 years which is close to marriage date of June 8, 1896.
I forgot to mention. When Virginia Watterson, formerly Gee and Digney, married John George Spencer in 1934, she said she was last divorced Apr 17, 1934. However, I found a divorce record in Aug 1974 in Los Angeles of Virginia Gee from Alfred Gee. Could explain why Virginia continued to use the name Gee even though "married" to John George Spencer.

Divorce Date:
Aug 1974
Divorce Place:
Los Angeles, California

On the other hand, perhaps this 1974 divorce is for Virginia Watterson's son who was Alfred E. Gee who may have been married to a Virginia L. someone.
-
I think Lizzy‘s sister Julia Averill firstly married Andrew Griffin and they went to Scotland and then Illinois. Julia remarried to Charles Sien and she died January 7, 1965 in Anaheim Orange California. Her obit might mention Lizzie if Lizzie is still alive in 1965 which I doubt.

Good morning, Sandra. You are so good at finding these daughters. Thank you. So far no sons, neither on online trees or in what you have so cleverly found. I did wonder if the Matilda on the 1901 Irish census is Eva T. as in T for Tillie aka Matilda. Same age.
It is curious that Lizzie would give her mother as Margaret Sands at time of marriage which is clearly not so.
Thanks again

I did find the marriage record of Charles Wilson to Twila Buoy on Oct 29, 1949 in Erie Co., Ohio. So Twila's first marriage was to a Buoy/Bouy.
Eva's place of birth keeps changing - England,Scotland, Ireland. I opt for Ireland. But you are right. Strange census info. The marriage record that you sent before shows Charles H. as age 30 and Eva Virginia as age 26 but very doubtful of Eva's age. Wonder if in 1930, the age at marriage should say 25 rather than 15.
Before I could post this, I see Twila's first husband was James Bouy as per father's obit.
Thanks ever so much. You are figuring this out despite the changes in info.

I have written to the COI in Moneymore which may not be the correct church but we will see. There is a church on every corner, literally, maybe even more than one. I was to Ballinderry one day 2 years ago but wouldn't say I am familiar with the area. Isaac and Margaret were married in the COI, Parish of Ballinderry. Maybe the church is in Cookstown. I asked about the baptisms of their children. We have 5 out of 8.

Getting back to John Watterson married to Eliza Jane Ferguson. She died in 1870 and John is found on the 1870 census, twice, first time perhaps July and second time Nov. then we don't find John again.
Eliza and all the children are buried together but no John. Is there any way to search for his death using possible parents Joseph Watterson and Mary Woods.
-
With help from a fellow poster, I have the deaths of Isaac Averill and Margaret Jane nee Workman. He died Dec 28, 1924 and she died Jan 10, 1926. The husband of the one daughter who remained in Ireland was present at their deaths. So we have all 6 of the 8 living children as of 1911 as specified on the census. And Emily's passport application in 1923 to go to Ireland to see her parents was accurate.

Reply 71 - city directories indicated John was still living at 4520 Frankford in 1875.
Searched with the parents Joseph Watterson/Waterson/Waiterson and Mary Woods but sadly didn't come across him.

1875 city directory - John M Waterson - 4520 Fkd, Fkd. Philadelphia. No occupation given.
One to discount - John Waterson listed 923 Cantrell Street was 42 years old in 1886 - various entries for this one.
Nothing to positively identify this one - 1879 city directory - John M Waterson - 64 Adams Fkd - Labourer

The son John Waterson appears in City Directory 1890/1891/1892 - 1210 Potts - occupation printer. Plus various entries following years at 1026 Olive

I should have worded my reply about the 6 living children of Isaac and Margaret Jane differently. I should have said 6 living children out of 8 births. The one that did not emigrate was Sarah who was still alive in 1926 when her mother died.
I was so excited to hear from the Ballinderry Parish this morning and they confirm the births/baptisms of Jane, Julia, Elizabeth, Emily (not Emma) and Matilda who became Eva T. as in Tillie for Matilda. Jane however was born Dec 28, 1875 (not 1876) so she would be the firstborn. Emily was born July 31, 1891 and baptised Mar 8, 1892 so she would be the last born of the ones we know about.

Wow, you are impressive, Sandra. I did not have any births after 1911 for Sarah and John - there was a Mary Agnes on the 1911 in Ireland, age 11 months. Gioviale String Trio
https://www.ibiblio.org/folkindex/gp03.htm
Cherokee has become synonymous with PN-G tradition. Cherokee was arranged by the PN-G band director Frank Gioviale and had its origin as a half-time performance for an out-of-town football game. This first half-time performance featured Cherokee with the drum major in the long headdress down to the waist and the twirlers headdresses down to their shoulders. It was such a huge success they used it all during the year, and it eventually became the fight song.

Fascinating couple and fascinating life. Massive change for Julia from possibly quiet life in Ireland to wife of famous violinist. Thanks for sharing articles about Frank and Julia.

Nice to be able to find pieces like that to give an insight into there lives. :)
Probably lots more small snippets to be found.

Well, they were an impressive family, giving back to their communities.

Is S H a daughter to Frank and Julia? Possibly the firstborn in 1946?
-
Yes but we can't name her on here (living person)- not the first born - that was "R" (as per the passenger list in 1946) - "S" born 1947

With the help of a fellow poster, I now have the marriage record of John Spencer and Virginia Watterson's daughter Jane to Henry Joseph Samaniego in 1954 in Inglewood, California. Jane was age 16 and lived at 683 N. Ramona Ave. Witness was Joann Fry which may be her half-sister Joan nee Digney. Jane subsequently married Richard Albert Alves in 1967 but they divorced in 1972. Richard died in 2014. Don't know if Jane remarried after her divorce from Richard or if she is still alive.
-
Researching the Averill family further, I have learned that Lizzie's g grandfather Thomas Averill married Mary Watterson in 1846 in Ireland.
At least 3 of her father Isaac's siblings emigrated to Philadelphia. These include John Averill who died before 1910, Sarah who died Apr 26, 1914 (don't know if she was married), and Nicholas Averill who died Apr 17, 1913. Wife of Nicholas was Isabella Hoey/Hovey. All of these had parents Nicholas Averill and Matilda Anderson. Don't know if any of these obits would mention their niece Lizzie Watterson nee Averill. Isabella Averill died Nov 10,1928 in Chicago.

Sandra,
You are very quick at finding these people. On findagrave,it says Elizabeth born Delaware but i think that is Delaware Co., Pennsylvania as the 1870 census says she was born Pennsylvania.
Thanks for finding John's death in 1921, which is later than thought.
I see a brother-in-law David Donelly with John in 1910. I looked for him in 1900 and I see a Jane Mary Donnelly. John had a sister Mary in 1842 and a sister Jane in 1853 neither of which fit Jane Mary born 1858. Unless Jane Mary is a sibling to John's wife Maggie for whom we do not have a surname as yet.
-
Wondering if John Averell’s wife Margaret died Feb.10, 1927 and if her maiden name was Keenan. And if David Donnelly married her sister Mary Jane Keenan. Just a guess at the moment.

There seems to be some confusion in online trees. According to one tree, there is a John Averell born Philadelphia in 1854 (ours was born Ireland) son of Hugh Averell who married Margaret Donnelly in 1874 which is the same year that our John married Maggie. That John died 1882 in Philadelphia. However, if you follow the censuses, Hugh's son John was still single in 1880, and his death certificate also says single.
So it must be our John who married Margaret Donnelly.

Really not sure that is the correct Daniel Donnelly, Peggy. :-\ Daniel would have needed to return to Ireland, marry Jane and return to Philadelphia in 1888 :-\ (it is not unusual for someone to travel back and forward but there is no indication in any record that he gives an earlier immigration date)

Nicholas Averell's wife Isabella died in Chicago on Feb 10, 1928. Her parents were James Hovey and Margaret Patterson. I wonder if her obit might mention her niece Lizzie Averell who was possibly Lizzie White before 1928.
-
I have learned from St. John's COI, Ballinderry Parish, that Lizzie's mother Margaret Jane Workman had a twin brother William George, also born Feb 8,1850 although I don't really want to get diverted into the Workman family. Still hoping to find Lizzie's death. I have requested her sister Julia Sien's obit from Orange Co. in the hopes something is mentioned about the rest of the family, if there is an obit.
-
I now have the details of the marriage of James B. White to Lily E. Averell in 1923. Her parents were George Averell and Elizabeth Workman, and Lily was born 1899 in Philadelphia. So Lily and our Lizzie are not the same person, although likely related. Wonder if Elizabeth Workman and Margaret Jane, mother of Lizzie, are siblings. I don't have George as a sibling to Isaac who is Lizzie's father. Lily and James were both residents of Chester , PA in 1923 at time of marriage.
-
Lily e. Averell was born March 1899 in Philadelphia as per her marriage record to James B. White, her parents George Averell and Elizabeth Workman. I can't find the family in 1900. James b. White was born poss. 1889 as per marriage record (difficult to read). both his parents John White and Catherine Tobin are deceased before 1923 marriage. I can't find them either in 1900. Can anyone find them? Looking for ages and siblings.

Wow, that is impressive, aghadowey. I don’t know how you did it but thank you. I notice difference in wife’s name but likely same person. I thought James’ mother was Catherine Tobin even though it was transcribed as Catherine Solen at time of marriage.
Thanks again.

-
I have looked on findagrave at the Lillian White who died in 1969 and I don’t think it is the correct Lillian. There is a gravestone photo which seems to have all the wrong people.
It is amazing how many James Whites were born in 1883 in Pennsylvania.
I found one who married Isabel Young in 1905 and had several children but our James says he was not married before 1923. In 1920, Isabel is transcribed as Orible.
-

Not sure wife Jennie is Lily Ethel :-\
Lily could be a nickname for Elizabeth or some other Christian name.
-
I found more than one tree with John White and Katherine Tobin and there is much confusion between trees but one seems correct as far as I have checked so far. It has James B. on it although he had a previous marriage to Mary Martin in 1900 as per this tree (he would only be 17). John White died abt 1901 as Katherine remarried abt 1902 (as per 1910 census) to Michael Hennessy. If I have found the correct Katherine in 1920 in Philadelphia, Michael has died. Katherine supposedly died in 1923 as per this tree.
Would like James' death record for Jan 23,1938 in Chicago to verify parents' names. Or an obit.
-
I found a transcript of James’ death in Chicago. Date of birth was given as October 15, 1883 instead of November 15 but I think it’s the same person. Place of birth is Scranton. Parents are Michael White and Catherine Tobin whereas it should be John White and Katherine Tobin. Michael Hennessy was her second husband.
Now to determine if Jennie is the same person as Lily Ethel.
-
There is a Jennie E. White born 1890, died 1951 who is buried in Forest Home cemetery, Forest Park, Illinois which is the same cemetery as James B. White who died 1938. Can anyone find more details on her exact date of death, parents names, etc.?
-

Hello Sandra,
There are at least 3 families with John White married to a Catherine in 1880 in Pennsylvania. Having said that, I think you have zeroed in on the correct family because it has a James in it. Funnily enough, although you have found the correct family in 1880, with Thomas F. as the oldest son, the link provided leads to another family with Edward as the oldest son in Cherry Township, Sullivan Co. There is confusion in online trees between these two families.

Thank you very much for finding the deaths of Katherine Hennessy and her husband Michael, exactly as reported for Katherine. I am confused by your reply at 19:22 wondering if William Smith, informant, is a brother to John White. I tried to quote the reply but I guess I did it wrong. Am I understanding things wrong?
Thank you RJ137 very much for Katherine's obit which verifies her children and siblings.
Today, I called the Forest Home Cemetery at Forest Park, Illinois to see who is buried with Jennie E. White, death 1951 as per findagrave, to see first of all who she is buried with, and if they have further info on her exact date of death, and any other info. James B. White who died 1938 is buried in that cemetery as per his death record but he is not listed in that cemetery on findagrave. They are to call me back this afternoon in that regard. I wanted to see if she might be the same person as Lily Ethel nee Averell who married James B. White in 1923.
Thanks for all the other info you have provided Sandra. You are a whiz.

Thanks Sandra. On the 1910 census, Katherine is living with her second husband Michael Hennessy, and several of her White children. One of them is Margaret, with Margaret's children Cathleen and Regus, but I can't make out Margaret's married name. Therefore, I haven't been able to find Margaret in 1920. It also has Mary age 18, married for 3 years, with a daughter Anna age 2. I am wondering if this has been confused on the online tree to be Catherine White's youngest daughter, born 1908, instead of Granddaughter. If Mary is married, why is her name still White?

That is very clever. I thought Edward White was the same person as son Edmund White and likely he is, but Mary is his wife, not Catherine's daughter Mary. Maybe the online tree is confused there as well, thinking Mary was a daughter instead of daughter in law. There is no daughter Mary on the 1900 census. There is something written above Mary's relationship and it may say in-law. Maybe. But I think you are right.

Fabulous. You are sorting this all out. I found that daughter Kate born Dec 1874 died 1904 in Minooka, Lackawanna, PA, husband William Cotter.
I see you have found Edward and Mary's son Edward with Anna in 1930, although Anna's age is wrong. Way to go.

Hmm. There seems to be some confusion in 1920 about the parentage of Anna with her surname as Sylvester and father born Italy, just like Peter, although I doubt she is Peter's daughter as he would only be 16 at her birth. She must be Mary's daughter Anna White.
You have once again followed Mary through to a second marriage. Very good.
Great obit for Frank in 1967 - from miner to dancer.
Thanks for everything

Why can't I find Lily Ethel Averell in Pennsylvania before her marriage to James B. White in 1923 ? Her parents were George Averell and Elizabeth Workman as per the marriage record and she was from Chester, PA in 1923. Born abt 1899 in Pennsylvania. So you would think the family would be on the 1900 census. Or 1910, or 1920. What's with that?
-
I look more closely at the marriage record I think Lillian was born 1893.
-
Regarding Jennie E White, wife of James B White, I called Forest home cemetery in Illinois yesterday as findagrave has her name and year of burial which was 1951. They didn’t call me back yesterday as promised so I called them this morning.
Unfortunately all they had for her was her date of burial which was June 2, 1951. With further questioning I learned that she is buried right next to James B. white who died in 1938 so I would say that confirms they are a couple. She is in section 15 Lot 88. They did not have her age, parents, anything at all but findagrave has her born in 1890.
-
A transcript of Jennie's death record shows that she was the daughter of Jacob Greiss and Mary Moran and was born Jan 1, 1891 in Chicago. So not the same person as Lily Ethel Averell. Wonder if Lily died before James or did they divorce? Don't know when James married Jennie Greiss.
-
Still puzzling over Margaret on the 1910 census with Michael Hennessy and wife Catherine White nee Tobin. The age fits for her to be Margaret nee Kearney. Perhaps she had a first marriage to someone called McG..... and was now with John F. White but not yet married to him. There is a daughter Cathleen age 2. Wondering is she is the same person as Katherine born abt 1905 who later married Joseph Hoban and is listed in John's obit in 1955. Perhaps Katherine/Cathleen's biological father is not John White. Just a thought.

Sandra, it is great to have all these Hoban obits. Thank you so very much. And I see you have found daughter Mary Uhos and the death of an infant daughter Cathleen Hoban for Katherine aka Cathleen Hoban, nee White. Cathleen White would be the 2 yr old on the 1910 census with her mother Margaret nee Kearney in the household of Michael Hennessy and Catherine nee Tobin. I suspect that the 1 yr. old Regus on that census died young. In 1910, Margaret says married 2 years (she was married in West Virginia in 1907 to John White) with 3 children but there are only 2 on the census.
Also thanks for the marriage of Joseph M. Hoban Jr. to Janet Margaret Ward, and their obits.

This would be John & Margaret White with daughter Kathleen in the 1910 census. Census states they have been married 3 years(1907), which matches the marriage record. The daughter Kathleen is listed as being 1 yr 7 months old. The census was taken in April 1910, which would mean Kathleen would have been born in Sept. 1908. Kathleen DOB is listed as 11 Sept 1908.

Looks like I made a mistake regarding the 1910 census and the household of Michael Hennessy and Catherine nee Tobin. Mother Margaret with daughter Cathleen - so similar to John White and Margaret Kearney with daughter Cathleen. This Margaret must be nee White and married to a Mr. McGuthluk or whatever. I will resume my search for a Margaret White married to a McG***
Do you think Maurice Tobin is the same person as Moses Tobin mentioned in Catherine Hennessy's obit?
-
William Smith 1104 Philo Street was the informant on the death certificate of Catherine Tobin/White/Hennessey.
Sandra
(Not quite sure now why I linked William Smith ?? He was on Philo Street in 1910 ? Too much sun !!
William Smith 1104 Phylo Street was also the informant on the death certificate of Mrs Margaret Smith 207 Jefferson Ave, Scranton (married) who died 26 December 1924. The parents of Margaret were John White and Catherine Tobin.
Burial St Patricks Cemetery. Olyphant. PA29/12/1924
Sandra
-
So is there a mistake in Catherine Hennessy's obit in 1923 and her daughter should be Mrs. William Smith, not Mrs. Martin Smith, and her daughter is Margaret. If that is the case, when did William and Margaret marry? Was she previously married to a McG*** as per the 1910 census?
-
If you notice on the death cert it says Catherine Hennessy is a widow which she was'nt because Michael Hennessy did not pass away until 1937. Occasionally little idiosyncrasies are thrown up. :-\
McG *** could be a load of rubbish :-\
Sandra
-
I think Katherine and Michael were not living together in 1920 as I found who I thought might be her as a boarder, age 72, widow so I thought Michael had died but then I found him with Frank on the 1930 census.
I had decided McG** was rubbish when I thought Margaret on the 1910 was Margaret Kearney but I guess it is still rubbish if Margaret was married to William Smith at that time.
-
The obit mentioned a sister Mrs Margaret Tise ?
I did find a Margaret Tice but she was a Sarah Margaret Workman (also Wortman on some records) at birth ? Supposedly born Ohio 1863 ? They also had a son with Emmett as a middle name and that rang a bell :-\ Was that the other White/Tobin family ? So quite a mish-mash.
Sandra
-

Sandra, you are amazing. I wrote a lengthy reply which disappeared but just as well. Looks like Margaret White was first married to William McKettrick and they had Kathleen and Regus who is the same person as Rita. But Regus is only one in the 1910 census so I guess that’s a mistake for age. Or the dob on Rita’s death certificate is wrong which is more likely if Margaret had only been married 2 years. Sometime between 1910 and 1923 Margaret married William Smith. Need to look at the 1920 census.
I found it interesting that Margaret Tice was nee Sarah Margaret Workman. Wonder who her parents were and will look for that. Lily E. Averell’s mother was Elizabeth Workman. I have still to find Lily on a census before her marriage to james B. White or after her marriage for that matter. Lizzie Averill who married Benjamin Watterson had mother Margaret Workman married to Isaac Averell in Ireland.

Try as I might, I cannot find Margaret’s remarriage to William Smith nor can I find Margaret as either Smith or McGettrick in 1920. Nor Regus aka Rita McGettrick in 1920 although we know that Rita had the same address as William Smith in 1923.

Thank you RJ137 for this interesting clip. I immediately went to FamilySearch and looked for JB White on the 1920 census at that address. Found nothing. Maybe I should put in James B. White and see if anything comes up.

I was rereading the newspaper article in 1923 about Rita McKittrick learning of the death of her uncle Joseph White in South Omaha, Nebraska. First of all, she is referred to as Mrs. Rita McKittick. Secondly, it says Joseph's father was Michael White. Hmm. Then I realized they meant Michael Hennessy. But thirdly, they mention Joseph had a surviving brother Thomas whereas I have Thomas' death as Mar 4,1909. Am I wrong? Do I have the wrong Thomas? Or is the newspaper wrong?
I was also thinking of the newspaper clipping found by RJ137 in 1920, where Miss Rita McGettrick and Mrs. Michael McGettrick are visiting at the J.B.White residence on Dolph Street. Who is Mrs. Michael McGettrick. Do they mean Mrs. William McGettrick, Rita's mother? If so, Margaret must have remarried to William Smith after July 17, 1920. And could J.B. White be Joseph, or his brother James B. White?

This is all very confusing but I think the fellow who died in 1909, Thomas F. aka Frank is the son of our couple. It is of some concern that sometimes the parents' place of birth is given as Ireland and sometimes as Wales, but I have thought there was only one John White and Katherine Tobin couple. There seems to be a John White and Katherine Ward couple which seems to be intermixed with this couple. When Katherine Tobin remarries to Michael Hennessy, I think she says she is from Wales so perhaps John was from Ireland and Katherine from Wales. Maybe I should pay more attention in case there are two John White/Katherine Tobin families but I haven't thought so, so far.
I think you have followed Frank and his wife and their doctor son correctly.

Catherine Hennessy's death certificate says she was born in Wales but both her parents were born in Ireland.
1880 census - John and Catherine - Lackawanna, both born Ireland, John is 30, Kate 25, John is laborer, children Thomas 7, Kate 5, Patrick 3, John 1.
1900 census - John and Catherine - Lackawanna, both born Wales, parents born Ireland, John is 48, Katherine is 45, John is coal miner, children John age 21, James 15, Edmund 12, Joseph 8, Frank 6, Robert E. 3.
1910 Census - John deceased, Katherine with Michael Hennessy, both born Wales, Michael is 42, Katherine is 55, children Edward is 22, married for 3 years, Margaret McGettrick is 21, married for 2 years (she is actually 29, married 10 years), Joseph is 18, Frank 16, Robert 14.
1920 census - don't find couple but Katherine may or may not be living in Philadelphia, widow, age 72.
Catherine dies 1923 in Scranton, born 1856 in Wales, says widow, age 66. William Smith is informant who is married to Catherine's daughter Margaret formerly McGettrick.
Michael is living with stepson Frank in 1930, Frank age 35, parents born Wales.
Michael dies 1937.
I still think same family. Ages pretty consistent for John and Catherine, except for possible Catherine in 1920 which may not be her. I think possibly Catherine and Michael were separated in 1920 but would love it if someone could find them. Also would love to find John White's death abt 1901, as per 1910 census. And Catherine's remarriage to Michael Hennessy abt 1902.
-
Today, I found Catherine quite easily with Michael Hennessy, he is 55 born Wales, she is 67 born Pennsylvania. Boarder is Robert E., age 23, who is her son.

The body of a William McGettrick was found in a hotel room in Clinton, Reading, Berks, PA on Feb 22, 1928. Very little was known about this man at the time other than his name and a deputy coroner's report was issued at the time and the body was turned over to the Anatomical Board of Philadelphia. I wonder if further info was found regarding William and if a more complete death certificate would be issued.
I phoned the Anatomical Board this morning and await a reply.

Yes, Bill has made contact with me and he has contributed much with regard to William McGettrick although we are uncertain at this point whether he died before Margaret married William Smith or if they divorced. I think I found William McGettrick in 1920 in West Deer Township and he says married. He is a blacksmith as was Margaret's husband at time of marriage. I wish I knew how to send the link but here goes.

I am coming to the conclusion that Lizzie Watterson nee Averell and Lily E Averell who married James B White are the same person. Lizzy is on the 1920 census as Lillian Everall, divorced. Her parents were Isaac Averell and Margaret Jane Workman. Lily gives her parents as George Averell and Elizabeth Workman in 1923. Says she was born in Philadelphia so her parents should be there as well but they cannot be found. Nor can Lily before 1923. Thinking that she gave the wrong first names for her parents . Then in 1934 James B White is with Jenny nee Greiss formerly Panagos whereas we have Elizabeth White nee Averill in Inglewood as per Daughter Virginia’s marriage.
-
Possibly Benjamin Franklin Watterson's obit might mention Lizzie is she is alive in 1944. Benjamin was the son of Benjamin Watterson and Lizzie Averell and Benjamin the son died Feb 2, 1944 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. If his mother Lizzie is alive, might have her residence or if she was remarried. At the very least, might mention other relatives.

Jennie Panagos nee Griess who married George Panagos in 1910 in Iowa married Will Schumacher/Shoemaker in 1915 in Montana. I don’t know who she was with until she appears with James B.White in 1934 in Nebraska then in 1938 in Chicago when James dies. I don’t know when James and Lily Averell split up. Jenny dies in 1951 in Chicago with the last name White. Can’t find James in 1930 with either wife. But I did find him in 1919 when he signed up for the military and his full name is James Bernard Benjamin White and his residence was Cleveland Ohio at that time.
Does James B. White who died in Chicago in 1938 have an obituary?
-
James Bernard White who married Lily Averell had father John who was on the 1900 census. https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M33W-L8Y. Although some censii say John born Wales, most say Ireland.
As per the 1910 census, John must have died abt 1901 since Katherine has been remarried to Michael Hennessy for 8 years. She is living in Pennsylvania.
Can anyone find John's death record or obit?
Also, James B. White married Mary Martin in 1900. By 1917, when he signs for the draft, he gives his mother Katherine as next of kin. What happened to Mary? I don't find James and Mary in 1910.
thanks for any help

Thank you so much, oldohiohome and Sandra. I do think all of these records relate to Benjamin Watterson, and mostly to the family of James B. White and Mary Martin. The 1910 Census says James married but no wife there. 1920 census has a Mary Meyers above James White - is this Mary Martin, remarried or an error.
When Nellie married in 1920 in Michigan, she doesn't say mother is deceased but Alice says mother deceased Jan 19, 1922 when she married in Michigan and her father gave consent. Did mother Mary die in Michigan, before 1922, possibly under name Meyers unless that is a red herring on the 1920 and should say Martin. Then death would be under White.
It makes sense that James could be in Omaha in 1910 because his brother Joseph also went to Omaha. Must figure out who Kate Cokran is. Mary's sister?
Thank you ever so much, Sandra and oldohiohome. You are ever so fantastic.

Yes, I was covering the family of James White and Mary Martin today. Just a reminder that OOH had already given you the Benjamin Watterson information back in reply 7 :)
On the 1910 census I suspect it is not James White but his wife Mary - occupation is housework !!
She is the sister-in-law to the head, so Kate Cokran could be Kate Martin ??
Looking at the 1920 ancestry transcription Mary Meyers is in the household above. If she does belong to that household something is amiss with her age.
The record for Mary Alice showing mother deceased was because her father had to sign a consent form because she was 16 years old.

OK, on 1910 census for Omaha, I think you are correct Sandra that it should say Mary White instead of James, who is indexed as female, doing housework. Had 6 children, 5 living, last two born Nebraska.
For the 1920 census, I think it is James with the same children, last one son James age 8 so born about 1912. So Mary Martin must have been alive in 1912. When James signs for the draft in 1917, he gives his mother Katherine as next of kin. So, Theory A, thinking Mary Martin died between 1912 and 1917, maybe in childbirth having James. But then who is Mary Meyers on the 1920. I believe she is in the same household as James. It says Mother and Father originally on the census and Mary is about the right age to be Mary Martin. If it is her, then theory B is that Mary Martin died in 1920/21, as she is deceased when Alice married in 1922 in Philadelphia, not Michigan. Personally, I am thinking Theory A, which means who is Mary Meyers? Says James and Mary are married but also says his daughter Margaret is married which is not true as she did not marry until 1923. Is Mary Meyers a housekeeper, a lady friend? James remarried in 1923 to Lily Ethel Averell whom I believe is the same person as Lizzie Averell, formerly Watterson.
I did see the info from OOH before, regarding Benjamin Watterson, Jr's death. but doesn't hurt to be reminded in case I missed it, or forgot it, or didn't realize the significance of it.
In the meantime, James remarried in 1932 in Nebraska to Jennie E. Klein, whom is nee Griess, formerly Panagos (1910), formerly Schumacher/Shoemaker (1915),then formerly Klein before the 1930 census when she is a lodger in Omaha. I don't have the exact marriage date for Jennie E. to Klein, or the exact marriage date to James in 1932. But we have narrowed down the split of James and Lily to between their marriage in 1923 and James' remarriage in 1932 to Jennie E. Klein. I don't find James in 1930 or 1910 for that matter since James is really Mary on the census.
Thanks for everything. I still have to pursue Catherine Cochran, probably nee Martin.
Peggy

It was an interesting couple of hours finding the White daughters. Pleased it is helping you piece the family together.
Only guess work but I think Mary Martin/White could possibly have died in child birth or after the birth of James. There was the flu deaths in 1915 (63,000) and 75,000 in the first 6 months of 1918 :-\
Might be worth contacting the find a grave contributor to see if they have more on Catherine Cochran.
It was only a very brief "Mrs. Cochran died in 1956" - The entry was made 13 August 2021, so very recent.
I did find one Kate Cochran in 1956 but unfortunately did not match.
Perhaps the 1910 says Kate Martin is M2 - 4 children !!
Good Luck

It doesn't help us to know when Lily E. and James B. White split up but we know that James was in Nebraska in 1932 as that is when he married Jennie E. Klein(M:Gus Klein 1926 Ohio) nee Griess, formerly Panagos(m:1910 Iowa), formerly Schumacher(m:1915 Montana), formerly Kimball (m: 1915-1926).
So I looked for both Lily and Lizzie in 1930 in Nebraska and in California, where she was in 1934. No luck.
Peggy
-
James B. White married Jennie E. nee Griess in 1932 in Nebraska and they were divorced by 1937 on grounds of cruelty. Jennie died June 2, 1951 in Chicago and is buried with James. Jennie was first married to George Panagos in 1910, Will Schumacher/Shoemaker in 1915, Richard Kemball bef. 1926 as stated in her marriage to Gus Klein in 1926 but I never found a marriage to Richard Kemball. Not sure which surname she would have been using when she married James B. White, possibly Klein. I am not aware of any children for Jennie in any of the marriages but who knows.
Still haven't found James B. White or Lily White nee Averell or Lizzie White nee Averell in 1930 anywhere.

Hi Peggy, Hi Sandra
My name is Courtney and I live in the US. My mom's maiden name is Watterson, and I was trying to do some research and had the good fortune of stumbling across this incredible thread!
My mother's (nee Kathy Watterson) father was John Payson Watterson (d. 1995). His father was Joe Ferguson Watterson (b. 1898). Joe F Watterson was one of the children of Ellen Watterson who was "adopted out". Sadly, the family story goes that he became an indentured servant and made many unsuccessful attempts to run away. Anyway, I hope you all see this message and we can talk further. I'm so curious of your connection to the family tree! I would love to pass along the bits of family stories we have garnered. Thanks so much !
-
Hello Courtney,
I am so delighted to hear from you. I was not notified that I had a reply to this thread. I just happened to find it when I was about to do another posting.
Basically, I am researching the Watterson family. Perhaps you can add to the tremendous wealth of information that Sandra has found and also what I had. Sandra has done a terrific job of researching this family. How far back in the tree have you been able to go? I would love to tie Joseph Ferguson Watterson's father John Watterson into a Watterson family in Ireland.
Anxiously waiting to hear more from you.

Lizzie's daughter Virginia married John George Spencer in 1934 at which time Lizzie was living in Englewood aka Inglewood and I am told she lived in the Hawthorne area and was called Elizabeth White. Virginia and John Spencer had a daughter Jane Georgene Spencer in 1937 who married firstly Henry Joseph Samaniego in 1954 and she was living in Hawthorne as was her half sister JoAnn Fry nee Digney. Jane then married Richard Albert Alves in 1967 but they divorced in 1972. Recently, I found on findagrave a death of Jane Georgene Arriaga in 2014. I think it is her. Her husband was Alfred Arriaga, Sr. and I believe they had a son Alfred Aguilar Arriaga July 3, 1975. Can anyone find Jane's marriage to Alfred Arriaga 1972-1975 or a birth certificate for their possible son in 1975. Alfred A. Arriaga Jr.'s birth is in the California birth index with mother Spencer but a birth certificate would really solidify things.
thanks for any help

I was hoping to hear more from Courtney as I think she may have some valuable information for us regarding her g grandfather Joseph Ferguson Watterson, father of John Payson Watterson died 1995. I did send her my email address but have had no reply.

As per the death record of Joseph M. Watterson in Aug 1883, his father was John M. Watterson and was deceased. So looking back at the city directories of Frankford with John M. Waterson and the last one that I see using the middle initial M. is in 1879 in Frankford which may represent John's address in 1878.
I have now found the first and final account of the estate of John M. Watterson filed in Nov 1889. From what I can gather, John M. Watterson's executor was James M. Ferguson (his brother-in-law) who died in 1885 and John's estate was finalized by James' executor George S. Ferguson in 1889. So not sure if John had a will or if he died intestate but seems like he had a will. I am thinking that this final accounting would have John's date of death. But why can't we find John's death certificate or death record, 1878-1883? I am wanting to find out John's parents' names. And how would one access this first and final accounting in 1889 or find the will or estate papers for John M. Waterson before Aug 1883. Was his death not registered or horribly misspelled?
Hoping for some help regarding John's death.
Thank you so very much.

I tried to message Courtney again today in case my first message went astray. But her inbox is full. I have not received a reply from her as yet with regard to Joseph Ferguson Watterson.

Back to Lily Ethel Averell who said she was born 1899 in Philadelphia and her parents were Elizabeth Workman and George Averell which I had trouble believing as her parents cannot be found in 1900 in Philadelphia. However I have found a George Averell and an Elizabeth Workman both residing in Philadelphia in 1900 but not as a couple. George is the son of Hugh Averell and Margaret Moore and he subsequently dies in 1913. Elizabeth says she was born November 1969 Co. Tyrone although I cannot find her birth on Irishgenealogy. Co. Tyrone is where Margaret Jane Workman was born in 1850 and she subsequently married Isaac Averell. I don’t know if there is a connection between Margaret Jane and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is living with the William Abernethy family in 1900 in Philadelphia and is single. She says she emigrated in 1882 and I wonder if we can find her emigration which might give us some clues. I didn’t find Lily in 1900.

New posters need to post twice before they are able to use the personal message system.
So Courtney needs to do at least one more post.

Hello -- My name is Charles Warren Hallowell, Jr.
My mother was (died Dec 13th, 1955 -(pneumonia) Lillian Elizabeth Hallowell, ne Watterson.
Julia Roche was my aunt, who visited our home in Willow Grove, Pa many times during WW2.
My dear mother was divorced from my father, and never re-married.
Mother lived at 2163 North 15th Street, Phila, when she died of pneumonia while I was in Boot Camp (USNavy) in December of 1955.
My sister Doris died, leaving 6 children: John, Kathy, Jane, Margaret, Steve, & Michael.
Jane and Michael are now deceased.
Doris was born November 24th, 1929, and I am 9 years her junior.
Mother spoke of her brother Bennie, but I never met him. Her sister, Julia was my favorite aunt, (I didn't know of any others).
My mother often spoke of a very cruel childhood -- she was placed in a "home", where she met my father, who also had been placed in the same "home".
Mom, Dad, & Doris lived in Parma, Ohio before returning to the Philadelphia area, where they lived out their lives.
Charles Hallowell (Dad) worked at the Hunting Park Plant of the Edward G. Budd Company until he retired.
Lillian Hallowell (Watterson) worked for The International Resistance Corporatoin during WW2, and returned to homemaker after the war.
She later became a cocktail waitress -- until she died at the age of 47.
My mother's father was a fireman (not the fire engine guys), who worked 12-hour shifts shoveling coal into a hotel's boilers. In a fit of despair, he shovled one of the babies into the fire pit, so as to spare him from a life of cruel misery.
It's kinda funny how people talk of "the good old days" -- if they only knew !!
I'm 83 now, happily married and living in Arizona.
I'm sorry if this is TMI -- geezers can't help themselves ;>)

Hello Charles,
I am delighted to find this reply to my posting regarding your mother and family. I can't believe I wasn't notified that I had this reply or noticed it on my many visits to this site and this posting. Thank you so very very very much for sending this info. Yes, I did think your mother and siblings had a horrible childhood. Also, your grandmother Lizzie Averill. Can you tell me when and where Lizzie died? Under what name? I am so anxious to know. I do hope you get my reply. I am waiting with bated breath.

For everyone out there following this thread but especially for Sandra who has been so wonderful with this research. I have confirmed the death of John M. Watterson, widower of Elizabeth Jane Ferguson. John died Nov 22, 1881 and was mis-entered at time of death as James N. Watterson. This is confirmed by locating the administration of John's estate by John's brother-in-law James M. Ferguson who gives John's date of death as Nov 22, 1881. Age 66, born Ireland, died of smallpox. I am told smallpox is likely why John is not buried with the rest of the family as he was buried in the hospital grounds. I am waiting at this moment for the settlement of the estate which records seem to be difficult to find.

Looking for obit of Joann McLaughlin nee Digney formerly Frye, Riverside, California, July 26,1988. Joann was the daughter of William James Digney and Virginia Margaret Watterson and Joann was born Nov 2, 1932 in Ohio, likely Cuyahoga Co. as that is where her parents were married in 1931. Joann was first married to james E. Frye before 1954 and then to Myron A. McLaughlin aft 1956 but they were divorced Jan 29, 1979. I suppose Joann could have remarried.
Thanks for any help.

Thanks Sandra for the legal notice. Seems like her husband may have had a spending problem or they were at odds with each other.

I did post a thank you to everyone who helped me with this Watterson family but I don't see my posting. So here goes again. Thank you one and all, oldohiohome, RJ137, and everyone. I am so grateful.
I did make contact with Charles Hallowell although unfortunately, he does not know when Lizzie died. Did not know about his aunt Virginia Margaret, only about his aunt Julia Roche. Never met Benjamin his uncle. Did know about Benjamin, his grandfather, as a fireman who shovelled coal into hotel furnaces, not a fireman fighting fires.

Best holiday wishes for you and yours, Ma'am --
Sorry that I am unable to help with finding any info on my Grandmother, Lizzie Watterson.
Per our phone conversation, I never met either of my Grandparents, and have scant knowledge of their lives, and/or where they lived and died.
There is a huge, gaping hole in the lives of folks who know not whence they came, as I can tell you from several decades of an almost-morbid curiosity.
Thank you kindly and muchly for your call -- I was as delighted as much as surprised.
Google: 2163 North 15th Street, Phila, PA -- to see where I lived in North Philadelphia, and where my Mother died of pneumonia (Dec.13th, 1955).
Best holiday wishes to you and yours.
Chuck Hallowell

When Lizzie's sister Emma Averell emigrated on Feb 28, 1908, age 16, from Mullan, Ballinderry Bridge, Ireland she was going to her aunt Mrs. M. Devlin, in Hudson, Illinois. I cannot find this aunt in 1900 or 1910 and I don't know if the M stands for her aunt's first name or her aunt's husband's first name. Emma did have an aunt Martha Workman who married James Wilson in 1874 in Ireland and Martha did die in Hudson, McLean Co. in 1925. James died 1912 so Martha was not likely remarried before 1908. Wonder if the emigration record is in error as to Emma's aunt's surname.
Martha Wilson's obit is 29 Jun 1925 in Bloomington, Illinois, USA in Newspaper Title:The Pantagraph

I am still looking for the death of Lizzie White, formerly Watterson, nee Averell. In 1934, she is residing in Englewood/Inglewood, California. I don't know if she remarried or moved or died there, after 1934.
I believe her second husband was James B. White whom she married Aug 9, 1923 in Philadelphia (if she is the same person as Lily E. Averell as per marriage record).
James B. White remarried to Jennie Elizabeth Greiss in 1932 in Nebraska. There must have been a divorce from Lily before that. If the divorce can be found, perhaps it will help trace Lizzie/Lily.
Thanks for any help
Peggy
