Title: What happened to John Robson
Post by: CG07 on Monday 05 July 21 04:22 BST (UK)
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about a John Robson, born 1879 in Ancrum. I know that he was illegitimate and it looks like his Grandmother looked after him, with the neither mother or father in his life. I’ve located him in he 1881 census with his grandparents and her children. As well as the 1891 census when he moved up to Midlothian and was living with his grandmother, Christiana Robson née Brown and his uncle (Christina’s son), Christopher Robson. I can’t locate him passed this date, however. No death certificates or concrete proof that he moved abroad. I’ve attached his birth certificate if it help.

No census other than a number of that name on SP but none in Edinburgh, except for John S but he was probably from Roxburgh, however I did find this below on family search,

Military Service John Robson1918
Residence Place:Edinburgh, Midlothian
Military Regiment:178305

Sorry, forgot to attach the birth certificate! Mother was Mary Robson and he was born 14th June 1879.

It's possible that he used his father's surname in later life, which would make him hard to find.

Have you looked at the Ancrum Kirk Session minutes? 1879 is a bit late, but there just might be some record of his parentage there.

I've attached the transcribed two census' from ancestry. The Mary in the first one is not his mother, but a Mary Walker that had married into the family as well as Thomas Robson, aged 1, who is definitely not his brother.
In the second one i believe the Christina moved up to Midlothian/Edinburgh with her son Christopher as he was joining the Police. Her husband had passed away at that point and her two other son's that were alive at that time had moved to Australia.
I've checked Australian records of those two Robson's and i don't think he moved there with them.
Also his mother was born 8th December 1851 and died 1st February 1885. She did marry in Edinburgh, however, to an Andrew Brown in 1883. She died in St Boswell's, Roxburgh.

Yes, that's always possible, perhaps Andrew Brown was his father. I've looked on SP for deaths and the only John that comes up with a mother's maiden name of Robson that was born 1879 is a John Scott who died in 1900.

Sadly the Kirk sessions in Ancrum only go up to 1732.

Thank you very much. That's the correct John Robson! Mystery solved. I've tried to attach a photo of the death certificate but it keeps saying it's too big.
