I have suspicions as to who this lady 'could' be but am waiting for possible confirmation of that, will update if/when I find out.
EDIT Looks like my suspicions were correct. Have just been told this 'is' Vera Jobling from Jarrow. Her dates were 1924-2011 and she married in 1944 at St Paul, Jarrow.
If anyone can give me a date based on her dress and possibly the hairstyle I'd appreciate it. I 'think' she has either a wedding or engagement ring on?
And though its not too bad, if anyone could do that voodoo you all do so well and give the photo a clean up that would be wonderful.

Boo - my attempts are - repair and crop the white edges + convert repaired to BandW + darken the BandW copy.

Hmm, okay so you are way more perceptive than I, what I thought may be a band on her ring finger, now that a sensible person has pointed it out I can see its her 'middle' finger :-)

I think its around the 1940s too. Possibly for her sweetheart/fiance to take with him when he joined the RAF. He was still in civvy street when the 1939 register was compiled, but was almost 20 so I would think he would be in the forces quite soon after.

Thanks Gadget. Given the dates and material being largely unavailable I've been wondering if that dress had been 'upcycled' from a previous one. lol I start with a photo and then my mind wanders to the times and how things were back then.

But that is from my point of view - if I had any idea of how to even start! but understand you all are critical of your own work as you aim for (and achieve) wonderful results.

The light was fading and with it went my eyesight ;D Maybe not as sharp as some versions but I went for the softer look, after all, this was taken over 70 years ago, and, I don't use photo enhacing Apps that are now in common usage ;) I would say this was most likely to be her wedding photo as it was a wartime wedding when material was in short supply ;)

I agree with you Carol about the use of enhancing apps, when they are not used the photos look more natural, I prefer them that way.

I don't know enough (ok, anything!) about the different techniques to comment on them.
Everyone who responds takes the same photo, works their own individual magic and skills on it and each produces something that is an improvement - but they are all unique and subtly different - that fascinates me and is super to see.
I save them all with a list of those were kind enough to work on them for me, along with the original - which in its own way, even torn and dirty, is special too :-)
