Title: Diary > Summary - Week ending 18th July 2021
Post by: Roobarb on Monday 12 July 21 09:36 BST (UK)
Well it's a new week, the last one before so called freedom day. I know there are a lot of people who are anxious about that as well as the many who are looking forward to it. The infection rates have increased to a level in excess of that at the beginning of the year and I've no doubt there will be more after last night's football match. Time will tell how that affects us all.

I don't have anything particular to report but it's been good to read how everyone is getting on. Some very sad times for some Rootschatters, better news for others. Good to hear from you Carol and particularly that your son is in remission, I hope his good health continues.

Looking forward to reading everyone's news this week.

Bumble Bee posted a wonderful story  of a team of cyclists , led by a footballer who is now cured of Myeloid Leukaemia, he and a group of friends have done their own “ Tour de France “ .
Wonderful to read it .
Carol will find it very uplifting I feel sure.

Inspected the plants I had put in the front border re slugs and snails ,there were one or two last night but no damage this morning.
I did plant some delphiniums in pots ,big pots but cut the bottom out and sank the pots leaving a good bit out of the soil ,room for the copper tape I got on Saturday, it is £4-99
for 4 m at our hardware shop and £9-99 in a catalogue for 4m plus postage.
The  plants were expensive so did not want to trust to the garlic alone ,which seems to work pretty well.
Raining today , but despite all the rain we have had ,the soil is not really wet
.
Had a Tesco Free range chicken for tea last evening but it is going back
today !
!lTough and tasteless despite following the cooking instructions to the letter.

Really lacerated my arm on a sharp branch of a purple Hebe I have overpruned .
it is coming back slowly but the offending branch was rather in the way and I did not think when I stretched my arm out  to dig the hole for the big plant pot .Blood everywhere thanks to blood thinning tablets.
Just bunged some Sudocreme on it and a paper tissue and some sellotape until my bath then a proper dressing .
My gardening gloves meant my hands were not filthy but scrubbed them anyway and got the cream out of the pot with a spatula from a new unopened pack.
It is amazing how many people get ointment out of the pot / tin with an unwashed finger, anoint the wound then go in the pot for more ointment !
However,we survived and many ordinary Mums will have done just that.
You can do too finicky.
There are children I bet who have never met a germ!
It was nice and clean after my bath so just a non stick dry dressing this morning .
Oh Roobarb, I could not agree more ,all those people and just last week the advice was not to shout and yell as that propels your breath further !!!!
People travelling back home all over G,B. And Italians across Europe if by coach etc.
I am not getting my hopes up at all but I am rather fed up now and it will be
years since I saw my daughter and second son .
Time is slipping by and you get them to Uni and they never really come home after that independence and where their jobs take them .
But you set them on the road of life and you can only travel so far before  they  leave you behind.
I am consumed with guilt that I left my father but we did think in all honesty it would be two years which became almost twelve as my husband gradually unravelled the web of dishonesty and corruption  in the firm he was sent to
“ rescue” .
He then needed to see it up and running profitably for a number of years  during which time the U.K. joined The Common Market so lots of changes
again  for a British firm trading in Belgium ,that added time again ,during which my father died, very suddenly .

Hope everyone is well , I think good weather at the coming weekend .
Look after yourselves .
Viktoria.

Sorry to hear about your injury Viktoria, hope it heals okay. I'm sure you're sensible enough to get it checked out if it's not.
You must be really missing your daughter and son, we can only hope that things are soon better and you feel safe enough to be able to get together with them.

Good gracious Viktoria you do get in the wars… do hope your arm is ok but by the sounds of it you know just what to do!
Good tip with the delphiniums…. Ours seem to do well for a couple of years and then need replacing which can’t be right… will try your method and see how we go..
Do hope you manage to see your daughter and second son soon as the years slip away and it’s time you’ll never get back… I’m sure you will soon 🤞🤞.
Hope FH’s mummy is keeping well too with the new baby due soon..

Roobarb- good you start another week as it does encourage us all to contribute….
As you say it’s good to hear from Carol and know that life for her is busy and a wedding to look forward to as well.

My week has started this morning with the funeral for our friend M’s ( who is going through cancer treatment) Dad aged 103! It was held outside ( never knew you could do that) it was the first large gathering of people I’ve been with (90) but all outside held at a large farm that normally holds weddings! He was a big noise in the Masons so it was a big turnout of older people! A tot of Whiskey was drunk by as all as we watched him go off to the local crematorium. …. A very different experience. A long life to be celebrated though.

My OH is still suffering with the virus that struck him 4 weeks ago now… more blood tests, eye tests, PCR test ( negative) but it’s just going to take its own good time to go… he’s lost half a stone but that’s more down to not eating much as he’s doing little as energy levels very low…… he’s certainly getting fed up with it!

On the bright side my sweet peas are growing well and I hope to be picking the blooms soon… I froze lots of broad beans yesterday, blue Berry bush has lots of fruit on going to bet it soon as I don’t want to loose them to the birds as I’ve lost virtually all my strawberries to the local wild life… they could have left a few…new pots taste wonderful and everything else is growing well.

My heart goes out to all those who have recently lost loved ones and I am thinking of you all…

Take care and stay safe everyone we still have a long way to go and wearing face coverings still seems the right thing to do….

Caroline

A sad occasion for you this morning Caroline but also as you say, a celebration of such a long life.
Not surprised that your OH is fed up, viruses can certainly knock the stuffing out of you. It must be doubly frustrating for him that after being careful and managing to avoid Covid for so long he's caught a different virus. Hope things improve for him soon.
Your sweet peas seem to have overtaken mine, well done!

Many thanks to Roobarb for keeping these threads going.
Sorry to hear you have hurt yourself, Viktoria, hope it heals up quickly.  Caroline, the funeral does sound unusual, but 103, my goodness!  Hope your OH is fighting fit soon.
We did watch the England games on this side of the pond.  I spent many years watching my son play soccer into his teens (he was very good, if I do say so), funny his plays all sorts of sports but rarely watches them on TV, except hockey, well, he is Canadian.  All three of my children and son's girlfriend have now had their second shots.  None of them reacted badly as I did, one daughter got a huge red spot on her arm, but that was about it.
On Friday I got together, in the park, no masks, sitting apart, with 5 other female volunteers at our  LDS Family History Centre.  The man running it, a church member, has been out of touch with everyone.  None of us there are church members, but we make up the bulk of the volunteers.  At this point we don't know if it will open again, or when.  It was a very nice visit.
The dog has had his blood work and tomorrow he goes in to go under to have his teeth cleaned and any extractions if necessary.  The last part I don't like...they charge an arm and a leg (how do poor people afford pets and have them properly cared for, the vet fees are so high), I guess I have to trust them if they take any out.  We have to have him over there at 8 a.m.
This Thursday we both have appointments for a hair cut, at different places (OH sticks with traditional barbers), can't wait to get this mop off.  Haven't had it this long since university days. I think my last cut was Nov 2019.
Weather has improved here, still humid but at least cooler.  We are supposed to have rain most days this week.
Have been watching Line of Duty, I started with Season 1 again, which we watched at least 5 or 6 years ago.  Am up to Season 3.  It's confusing at times, but very well done.
Not too much else to report.  Must resume my stretches, have gotten slack with the heat.
Stay well, everyone!

It's allowed for those of you at the other side of the pond Diana.  :D
Will you recognise each other with the hair all cropped off? And your little dog with his newly gleaming smile.  ;D  Pleased to hear everyone is safely jabbed and the heat is more manageable.

I’ve missed quite a few entries recently, but did dip in and out a few times.

So sorry to hear about the losses several of you have had over the past couple of weeks. I won’t mention people by name for fear of missing someone.

As I’m sure you’ve all heard, we are having a bit of a covid disaster here at the moment, centred on Parts of Sydney (due to people not being able to follow govt directives). Apparently according to our news reports, “the world is laughing at us” and “mocking” us because our vaccine rollout has been quite slow. Despite any faults I don’t think that many countries are in a position to criticise. Seeing the unmasked crowds at the football the other night put me on edge, and despite the high vaccination rate in the UK, surely there is bound to be an upsurge.

Everything is ticking along with me. Both daughters are planning holidays in the next couple of weeks - one to Tasmania and the other to Adelaide. As things stand at present, Tasmania is open but Adelaide is closed.

Look after your injury Viktoria. My father (who turns 90 in October) is regularly cutting himself on barbed wire when working outdoors. He had a particularly nasty injury to his leg last year which got infected. Likely he was not as vigilant as you with cleanliness and he did not go to the doctor until it got out of hand. It took ages to mend.

Caroline, Sorry to hear the your lovely Husband is poorly. I hope he doesn’t have to wait too much longer for a diagnosis, so he can receive the appropriate treatment and get back to his active self.

Roobarb, I’ve read that you have been getting out and about a bit more which must have given you a much needed lift. I just hope that you feel comfortable continuing to go out once the country opens up fully.

Your mention of ‘gotten’ made me smile Diana. I’m glad your weather has improved.

Wonderful to hear that Carol’s son is in remission.  ;D

Thanks everyone, had a long chat with daughter this evening as every Monday ,she has researched her brother’s condition and it is absolutely like a condition called GERDS,
Gastric upsets ,acid reflux etc from Scoliosis of the spine causing shortening of the oesophagus, can be sideways or forward as in “ Dowager’s Hump “.
Terrific pain central chest .
A scoliosis can  return as muscles have “ memories” it seems and whilst the curvature may have not much influence on how the spine  behaves ,altered posture can cause pressure on the oesophagus and gastric muscles will be affected.
A distinct possibility.
I have a Dowager’s hump, if you can have one without the inheritance!

Hope those not very well make good improvements .
Lovely to hear about your gardens, my Perennial sweet pea us taking over but it needs a good talking to  doesn’t seem to know it should climb ,is sprawling all over the patio!

The chap who wanted to do the pointing passed yesterday, he said “ Hello”
and was very civil ,I did put the onus on wrong info from Wickes ,not true but
it means he is not too embarrassed and we can pass the time of day.
Don’t like avoiding people.

Good to get dog’s teeth seen to ,the tartar/plaque  can over time affect their kidneys ,their breath gets smelly too.

103 ,gosh, how wonderful ,sad he did not get the full funeral but better than a short time ago.
I may have mentioned this already but vitamins  C and D are good tonics after an illness and C can improve appetite.
Take care everyone , cheerio for now,
Viktoria.

Ruskie, good to hear from you, I have read about the situation in Sydney but must say I didn't read any mocking comments. That sort of thing really annoys me, my response to the critics would be Could you have done better ?
Hope your daughters' holidays can go ahead.

Pleased to hear that some light has been shed on your son's condition Viktoria, hope that leads to some treatment for him.

Thanks Roobarb ,yes, it has been hard to witness a very patient ,calm person become  irritable ,snappy and generally not  himself.

Had a laught tonight, don’t ask me how I did it but got myself on Facebook to my daughter, the thing is,I had cleaned my teeth - which I must do after every meal, my front gums at the top were sore so as I was on my own I left  out my little plate with a couple of teeth on it so there I am with a gap in my teeth on Facebook!
Flash Harry has his school report, he is up to the expected level ,does not play too happily in a big group ( which surprises me) but is very kind and caring with the other children.

Must email my grand daughter, she made a wonderful cake for her step Dad’s 60 th Birthday .
He is to have the Spitfire flight ,well the cake was a mile high!
From a sky blue to white it soared, topped with clouds of white candy floss and a little Spitfire on a fine wire above it all.
Next month is Battle of Britain anniversary.

Well goodnight everyone ,sleep well and for those with immediate problems
, I hope you can sleep and things are better in the morning.
Viktoria.

Oh, dear, I said "gotten".  Well, there's my Elizabethan colonial English  ;D.
Looking in to the use of words, I frequently dip into Fowler's Modern English Usage. It is interesting to note that gotten only "got" its own separate entry in the 1996 Third Edition (Burchfield) and its use as AmEnglish, with reference also to its seemingly increasingly popular use in Australia and New Zealand.
I also have an occasional dip into Bill Bryson's "Mother Tongue", which I find is a fascinating, and easy to read exposition of the English Language and its uses in the broadest sense. A good dipper and quite enlightening.

Gotten was used in the Middle Ages and survived in NA after early settlement.  Funny, to my ears “got” used in the same sense sounds odd 😁.
Please don’t forget there is such a thing as Canadian English.  Gotten probably arrived here with the early Newfoundland fishermen, who came over centuries ago.
I love Bill Bryson. Have several of his books, including The Mother Tongue, and have read all of his books except the science one.

Yes it is strange, we say “ I bit “ but” I have bitten “ Wonder then why we don’t say , sat - satten
                hit - hitten— etc.?
Bill Bryson is lovely on Classic FM .BUT, am I mistaken in assuming he and the author are one and the same?
Thanks for that info.

Viktoria: "Bill Bryson is lovely on Classic FM. BUT, am I mistaken in assuming he and the author are one and the same?"
I believe it is the same clever chap V.  I do hope your laceration is healing well..... this morning my son posted a report on Facebook for his 43rd year + 1 day..... Moron attempted to jump his laptop on his skateboard. Result? One smashed laptop and massive grazes along his arm. Bonkers or what??? :P

Great job Roobarb, and it is lovely so many "lurkers" are now writing more often.

RUSKIE.... I have not heard ANY media reports mocking OZ for slow vaccine roll out. Why would you rush when you have such a low incidence of the virus.
On 13th July, Uk admitted to 50 more deaths in the last 24 hours, and 36,660 new cases.
I really can't imagine that Uk, particularly England would have a leg to stand on given our woeful record in every respect, other than exhorting the entire adult population to take the vaccine, which, might be admirable, but HAS brought its own problems.
At a time when Uk is still having more daily deaths than NZ has had since the start, (more or less,) how in hell could we mock!!
And now ALL restrictions are lifted, despite the Government admit we are looking at another Covid wave which is expected to peak in mid August. What a marvellous time to say we don't need to wear masks or distance any longer.
As top of the global mortality rates list, I am mocking England's Covid record.... I wouldn't dream of mocking any other part of the globe.  :'(
p.s. The baby we visited last week is utterly delightful.

This is the article I referred to, though in the last couple of weeks I’ve read a number of similar articles and “opinion pieces” on online news sites:
https://www.ft.com/content/1466396e-2959-4a46-a449-2e1654b40c36 (sorry link doesn’t work) This FT article was cited in another article and the word ‘mocking’ was used in the headline.

I think the mentions of Americans and those in the UK laughing at Australia are largely through (un)social media channels, which of course are all rubbish. Politically motivated, media beat ups, point scoring, people with agendas of some sort etc etc. I didn’t believe for one second that any real or normal people living in the UK would be laughing at us.  ;)

I did smile at your son’s antics MH. Boys will be boys, even big ones who should know better.  ;D

I really need to get my dog’s teeth cleaned too. She is almost four and hasn’t had a clean yet.  :-[ A while ago we started giving her Ascophyllum nodosum, which I think might have made a bit of difference. It’s a dried seaweed harvested in CANADA Diana!  ;D I don’t think it is a miracle product but when we first gave it to her I thought it made a difference. (Wishful thinking. Perhaps. But we are continuing with it.) I wish I’d taken ‘before’ photos. It could be something you could try on your little lad after his teeth are cleaned - it might delay having to get the teeth cleaned so often.  :)

Well I am waiting ,hoping I am overly pessimistic ,for repercussions from the social non distancing of all the travellers and massed shouting yelling crowds packed together at the football!
Not to mention any who travelled from Italy and back !

Restricted funerals and yet thousands and thousands all together just for a game of football.
It could have been viewed on TV.,but no, the great namby pamby fans  have  to be together!

Sorry folks but I find it all very childish and selfish and those who have stuck to rules and considered the greater good are the ones who will again do that
whilst the rest will please themselves .
I watched the match as you know ,from my settee , and was really puzzled it could happen ,all those people ,yelling and shouting when it was stated on the info bulletins that to do that would spread the virus ,not specifically at the match but in general.

I felt proud we had got  going with the vaccine so quickly .

I listened to Scotland’s First Minister  a day or so ago and talk about confusing!
It has been the same  with bulletins here .
So itty bitty , some seemed to contradict others ,but it could be me, hard to
assimilate so much in a little time.

Hope everyone is well, and feeling in good spirits generally .

My wounds on my arm are now dry and let it dry after bath this morning so some fresh air now ,no dressing.
Might do for bed tonight in case it gets rubbed as I turn over.

I think we will still need the diary for a good while yet, I know for many there is little to report, but the contact is always there ,we can have themes apropos of nothing at all except to raise a smile and stir memories.
Can’t be bad.
Thanks everyone .
Viktoria.

Pleased to hear your wound is healing well Viktoria.  :)

I got a text from my doctor's surgery this morning, it said that all staff, patients and visitors will continue to be required to wear a face covering. A good move in my opinion.
I read that Sadiq Khan is making it mandatory to wear a face covering on all London Transport. Thank heavens for some commonsense.

I don't think it will be long before Masks and Distancing are Law again in England looking at recent rises.

We don't have 'freedom' from this wretched virus and neither are those free who are suffering long term problems of either Influenza or Covid-19.

Some English areas are considering invoking Local Laws and Local Acts.

Collected my new glasses from Specsavers on Monday - varifocals - and told would take me a few days to get used to them.

Didn't go out again until today (Thursday) and as I was driving thought I'd keep to my old glasses.  Visited my niece and to see the twins - my they are bonny babies (even if I am prejudiced).   As usual, Macy full of smiles the minute she sees you - Darcy just stares as if you are an alien but after around half an hour the smiles finally appear.  The two of them are very different both in looks and temperament.  Macy's skin is white as a lily, Darcy's has a pale tanned sort of look, just like her Daddy and older sister Esmae.   At the moment - with just a fuzz - looks like Darcy's hair will be darker than her sisters.

My sister currently self-isolating prior to her hip operation on Monday.   Hope it all goes well with her as she has waited such a long time for this.  Last xray showed it's just bone on bone now!  She is in a lot of pain and can't walk without a stick.

Aside from the above just been the usual kind of week and the weather has been pretty dull and dreary though supposed to be nice at the weekend.   Fingers crossed!

It’s been a busy three days.  Tuesday at 8 am we dropped Darcy off at the vet’s and they called around 10:30 and said everything had gone well, no extractions needed, and he was starting to come around.  We picked him up at noon, he didn’t react at all when he saw me, very unusual.  He looked so miserable and a little unsteady on his feet.  Mid afternoon he followed me into my office and began to howl like a wolf, very strange!  He’s back to normal, now, full of beans, and has a dazzling Hollywood smile.
After we got home Tuesday OH got an email from the landscapers that they were coming on Wednesday to tear out the patio.  Not much warning!  They arrived around 8:30 and drilled til 3, with ciggie and coffee breaks.  What a racket, but surprisingly the dog barked for about an hour and then seemed to accept it.  I got used to it after a couple of hours.  Today they finished removing the patio and hopefully will get the rest of the job done tomorrow.  But we are expecting storms tonight and into tomorrow, so we shall see. A city north of Toronto was hit by a tornado today, no severe injuries that I know of.  I will leave my cell phone on tonight in case we have a tornado alert.
This morning when I took the dog out early quite a good sized area was all dug up from animals digging for grubs, have seen very little of this this year.  I am guessing a family of raccoons as the holes looked too big for a skunk and too many for just one raccoon, unless a very big very greedy one.
And we both got our hair cut today.  My salon which is fairly small, but usually quite busy, was at about half capacity, as per the guidelines.  Everyone still has to wear a mask.  OH only customer at his barber.  So good to get all that hair off, must say I see more grey than before the pandemic!
We are back to hot and humid, thank goodness July is almost half over.

No major storms last night, but we did get some rain.  Quite a bit of damage in Barrie, but no deaths or serious injuries, most people know to go to their basements, but tornadoes form quickly and there isn’t much warning.

Just typed a couple of paragraphs and then realised it wasn’t allowed as it was too medical so hope this version is OK.

Mid June given pain relief stick on plasters, wonderful pain free for first time from May 2019
Last Friday came out in rash in area of plaster, leaflet said common lasts a few hours
Still there Monday, ring GP at 8.30 in queue for 20 minutes, said I needed to see GP, no can’t do that. GP will ring you
11.45 GP rang come to surgery at 12.15 turns out I’m allergic to the plasters
Get home have coffee go to Chemist for prescription
By now it’s 2.15 ring Hospital speak to Consultant’s Secretary, she will add a note to my notes, consultant on holiday, next appointment in August.
By 3.30 I’m exhausted in pain and upset and I went to bed with a coffee. Didn’t do much got the next couple of days.

Now I’m wondering
How come I can go to the hospital to see a consultant, go to the hospital for blood test and scans see the dentist, see the optician but I can’t see a GP without jumping through so many hoops? I was the only person in the waiting room.

Rash is slowly going, I feel less tired but very, very fed up that the only thing that works I’m allergic too. Am I surprised? not really just fed up after all I’ve gone through since January 2019.

After that moan I’m going out for a walk, I’ll have a coffee out.

It puzzles me too, the Dentist right in my mouth,O K mask on ,but so close ,
yet no examination of my hip and a six week wait for XRay!
Result torn ligament ,still no advice or examination ,tablets of the mildest dosage  which are useless.
Eye Consultant  has worked throughout ,in very close proximity to my face .literally a few inches on the other side of the equipment that my chin rests on ,and forehead .

I am very grateful for that but to get to the hospital I was taking taxis driven by people who had only recently been abroad ,to an area where numbers are staggering ,the whole taxi business in our area is run by people who have travelled abroad.
It is a monopoly .
Very reasonable prices, most obliging and friendly ,but-.
I asked for transport because it was £ 70 in. Taxi,  and I could not walk very well , now it is sometimes a mini bus run by ambulance drivers but I have no decision in which it will be.
I just don’t understand.
Daughter’s B12 injections denied her for many months so now permanent nerve damage manifesting itself in strong permanent pins and needles and poor grip.
Yet other services are up and running ,less important ones too.

Many many people are expecting an astronomical rise in numbers soon..
Hospitalisation figures are already doubling each week, Prof Chris Witty this lunchtime was pessimistic.

Just to reflect back over and on a more serious note, it was my eldest brother's funeral earlier in the week.  Only fifteen of us were allowed in and names had to be given for track and trace.  Others had to stand outside.  The poem that the RVI nurses had written was inserted into the eulogy and it was all very moving.  It wasn't as low key as I expected as there was a bikers' escort, which was wonderful and I know my brother would have loved that.  It still doesn't feel real to me though.  I thought it would at the funeral but it still doesn't.  That night I thought about the unfairness of it all.  I just thought why?   It just feels like he was taken too soon.  That night I had the most horrible nightmares.

Onto another subject, I saw a bus notice up today (see photo)about the reason why some bus services have been taken off, especially in the evening.  It attributes this to staff isolating and reduced passenger numbers.  Although, from what I see the passenger numbers are going up not down.
I hear that the infections are increasing on Tyneside.  I am concerned about what the consequences will be from next week.  I will definitely keep wearing a mask.  It feels like we are sitting ducks waiting to see what the outcome will be of it all.  It feels like all we can do is do our best to keep safe and keep on keeping on.

Glad there were one or two positive things in your brother’s funeral, RTL,
Aren’t people thoughtful ,the poem and bikers ‘ escort .

It is usual to have dreams after such an emotional event, the temporarily nice
ones in which your loved one has not really died ,then you wake up - and the almost nightmares.
Perhaps they serve some purpose but both sorts are hard to bear.

Are you alright getting to and from work with the reduced bus services?

Earlier today in the news, the increase in hospital admissions is doubling every day !
Despite vaccinations -?
There will surely be repercussions after all those people at the football.
And yert numbers were restricted  at  your dear brother’s funeral.
I don’t see any sense in that.
Limit those most likely to obey and give free rein to those who won’t !

Look after yourself R,T.L .

Hi Viktoria,
Yes, I think people are thoughtful.  The eulogy was given by the Vicar and I was glad to hear the nurses' poem again. There was his favourite music but no singing. We were all very touched by the Bikers' escort coming along.  My brother would have loved that.
I also remember the 'bag of kindness' containing hospital comforts that was given by a Chaplain to my sister in law.  The kindness of strangers is quite wonderful!

My nightmare was horrible but I think it was probably my brain just working my thoughts out about all that has happened.  Thankfully, this hasn't been repeated.

Yes, fortunately I have still managed getting to and from work despite some service withdrawals.  From tomorrow I am on nightshifts again so I will see how things go.

I said to to a relative yesterday, how come things seem to be worse here now than it was last year?  They said it is because it has only now just properly landed on Tyneside.
I think it is starting to feel that way here.  There is certainly a sense of change and apprehension.
I am apprehensive about the coming weeks.  In Newcastle people aren't observing the distancing walk way markings and I think countrywide some people will be very happy to ditch their masks.  I have read that we we could be back in lockdown in five weeks at this rate.
As for me, since I have to go to work using public transport, I feel like a sitting duck just waiting to see what will happen. I have managed to dodge it over the last year and I am hoping that if I do get it at least now I will be a bit protected having had both jabs.
I agree with what you say about how there is no sense really in restrictions for some and free rein with limits for others.  There is a lot of money in  football though and as usual money has had its way .. enough to throw caution to the wind seemingly. ::)
Take care and keep safe everyone.

I have just this second received an email from one of the bus companies I use.
Thankfully, rules are we must carry on wearing face coverings.
However, distancing is finished as of next week and all seats can be used.  People can even stand if all seats taken.
Not looking forward to potentially standing packed in like a sardine after a nightshift, as I often did pre covid days. :-X

I haven't contributed for a couple of days, am sorry to hear of health problems for Gibel and Viktoria's family, hope things soon improve. RTL, the bikers' escort must have been very touching, a lovely tribute to your brother.

This hasn't been a good week for me. It started with coughing a lot through the day on Monday, I attributed it my asthma being affected by my hauling out some dead ivy, the dust and spores are not good. As the week went on I had my sleep disturbed by coughing. On two occasions I took a lateral flow test, my temperature was normal, oxygen level and pulse rates were good.
I seemed to be having trouble shaking it off and didn't have much appetite so took another lateral flow test yesterday (Friday). It was positive. Yes, I'm double jabbed, have spent the majority of the last year and five months alone, have been careful to the extreme and yet still I've got Covid. Suffice to say I'm not happy.

Edited  - Forgot to say, as of yesterday I can't smell or taste anything either.

Roobarb I am so sorry to hear your news and after you have been so careful for all this time too. I hope you manage to shake it off soon. The infection rates at the moment are very troubling and I can’t see that there is any sense in further lifting of restrictions right now.

My thoughts are with everyone going through personal difficulties at the moment.  I think the resilience shown and support given on these boards is wonderful.

Take care everyone

I think you need to take things easy now during your recovery time.  Please look after yourself well and keep popping in to let us know you are okay and  are getting there.
I wish you a speedy recovery Roobarb and hope you are back to your normal self soon.

Roobarb good company as you say, do you think it will prompt a rethink on “freedom” day?  I was reading about Andrew Marr today who apparently picked it up at the G7 summit in June. That poor man has no luck at all health wise.

RTL beautifully put.

I did have some very happy news this week, my son has been awarded a first class degree. So the exams he did at the dining room table went well after all 😆. Strange times indeed.

Thanks RTL. I could hardly believe it myself, you could have knocked me down with a feather when I saw the two lines, I put my reading glasses on to make sure I wasn't seeing things! Even then I took it into a stronger light to make certain.
I'll take your advice and rest, still feeling pretty rubbish so I don't need to persuade myself much  at the moment.
Thank you for your kind words.  :-*

Congratulations to your son Pinetree, he's done very well to achieve that, particularly considering the circumstances.

I wish you a speedy recovery and no after effects.
Multi Vitamins Roobarb, In correct dosage no harm but lots of benefits.

Well, thank goodness for the diaries!

My son has been sort of discharged re heart problems ,but what is wrong remains a mystery ,perhaps the spinal curvature old problem when looked into will throw up some answers.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments and good wishes, it means a lot to me.

Annette, I did think about the possibility of having caught it from the friend you mention but have discounted that for a number of reasons. I'm pretty sure I know who I caught it from, someone whose company I was in more recently and who has also been ill with it (after I met with them). Unfortunately it seems that the vast majority of new cases are the Delta variant which seems to spread much more quickly. The cases in this area and in the country as a whole have shot up.

Pinetree, I don't think the government would dare do an about turn because of Sajid Javid catching it, I think the criticism would be enormous.

I’m totally gobsmacked Roobarb… you of all people who’ve been so careful too, so sorry my dear friend… just take it easy and look after yourself as I know you will.. it just goes to show one can’t be too careful…

I hope everyone else who has been having issues of sorts will keep their spirits up too..this is no time for slacking… I’ve no idea what the government think they’re doing but it doesn’t make much sense to me…

My OH is still battling with this virus after FOUR WERKS now and one day I think he’s improving and the next not… so many tests and no nearer knowing …. Just have to ride it out but he’s finding it hard …..

Take care everyone and look after yourselves and your families…..it’s been a rubbish week for us but hoping the next one will see improvements….

Roobarb, as you can see others have felt as if they could be knocked over by a feather too at hearing your unexpected news.
Try and get plenty of sleep/rest/hydration as this will surely help your body fight back in defense mode.  I think that as rubbish as you are feeling now, take heart that your double jab will be assisting you too to recovery.  Hurrah for vaccines! :D  We are all rooting for you Roobarb!

Sorry, to read that your husband is still having fits and starts with his recovery Caroline. It is understandable that he is getting fed up, after four weeks of this. This must be very hard on you too, having to cope with this stress each day.  Hope each day is bringing him closer to riding it out.  I am sure we will all be rooting for him and you too, Caroline.

Pinetree .. Congratulations on your Son getting a First class degree.  :D You must be so proud of him!  He has done magnificently to do so well, especially considering the difficulties over the past year.  Thanks for sharing your good news with us. :)

I read  a vicar  is  in trouble  for  not adhering strictly  to the rules, my  church  is still going  to stick  to the rules unless the diocese comes up with something different, it  is  a  case  of watch  this space

Like many of the rest of you, I feel so sorry for poor Roobarb, and for all you others who have had terrible news and events to cope with recently. I wish you all comfort, peace of mind and loving support where and when you need it.
I have diligently shopped alone right from the start of all this hoo-haa, kept my asthmatic husband in the car, allowed to drive but not to emerge from it, worn mask and gloves, sanitised everywhere, and I have ABSOLUTELY NO CONFIDENCE in "Freedom"!! I thought they were barmy weeks back, and I'm totally certain now! It's so certain it'll all continue to spread and intensify......
What on earth can we do in face of all the stupid, stupid decisions and behaviour??
I think I'll plant a huge and thorny hedge around our house, and stay there!

Thanks for further good wishes, it's heartening to read so many kind words. I agree about the vaccinations RTL, I'm sure things would have been much worse without them. Tonight I actually had a little bit of appetite Pinetree,  so had a little more to eat, something nutritionally good as due to my having no sense of taste it could be anything! It's a step in the right direction anyway. Hoping to get my energy levels up a bit, I'm getting quite exhausted just going upstairs but I can't expect everything at once.

LM and TY, I'm sorry this has worried you, I wish I could offer some words of reassurance, it's difficult to know what to say. Without swearing! I really think the government should have ar least kept the rule for wearing masks on public transport and in supermarkets if nothing else. It wouldn't spoil anyone's enjoyment of anything and would give a little comfort to people like yourselves.

Hope your OH makes some progress Caroline, it's certainly been a long drag for him.

Hope Caroline’s OH improves and delighted to hear the good news of Pinetrees son.
We all need some good news .
So called Freedom day doesn’t mean a lot to us as we’ll be continuing as we were with masks and not going anywhere. However I am hoping that husband can get an emergency dentist appt tomorrow. He’s been really struggling in pain and rang on Friday and he has to ring at 9am tomorrow to try and get an emergency appt. He’s currently been taking a cocktail of paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine spaced out through the days. If he goes down with Covid a few days after that, he’ll know where he got it from.

Thanks Candleflame.
Sorry to hear your husband has been in so much pain, I hope he manages to get an appointment. I had two appointments with the dentist, both shortly before I had my second jab. The second appointment was to replace a filling I lost last year. I felt more confidence in the dentist than in most environments, they have scrupulous sterilisation measures and protective equipment. To be honest I think the dentist's risk from the patient is probably greater than ours, the transmission of Covid being from aerosol as they call it. The dentist is behind a mask and visor so the patient is less likely to receive that aerosol than the dentist who is working in an open mouth. I do understand that you're worried though, I very much hope all is well.

Amongst all the bad news, I did have something lovely happen today. My lovely friend A phoned me this morning, she said that she'd left some flowers on my doorstep to cheer me up. I opened the front door, she was sitting in her car on the road, we had a short chat while she was there. It was so kind and thoughtful of her and the flowers are absolutely beautiful. What a gal. 😊

Roobarb - how lovely to see your friend even from a distance but to be cheered up with a bunch of flowers is always a boost to ones soul… lovely friend..

Candle flame - I do hope your husband manages to get to see the dentist in the next few days as he could be on cloud nine with a cocktail of painkillers…. Just go easy on the codeine though… my daughter ( bi-chemistry degree) goes bonkers if her father takes too many codeine as he has had to over the years at odd times …. Fingers 🤞 for him..

You’re so right Pinetree it’s almost inconceivable my OH was putting up fencing a few months ago…. At the moment he even had to sit down whilst trying to bbq this evening… let alone water the vegs… which I did… quite worried about him… he’s giving it a week to see if there’s a more significant improvement before going back to the docs….

Take care everyone and no party’s first the neighbourhood tomorrow in celebrations of our freedom….. really! What freedom seems almost worst than last year… and that’s saying something…

Well seemingly a new vaccine COVID-19 and flu combined is to be manufactured and the contract has gone to China, , in the germ warfare lab in Wuhan!!!
Someone please tell me this is a figment of someone’s disordered mind!

This is what comes of casual passing the time of day encounters over the garden fence!

Well I wanted a dog and almost had one this morning, but it had eight legs, I blundered into a thread from a spider’s web across the path. I tried to wipe it away with my hand but it would not go and there was the spider running up it to get me !Like a naughty dog on the end of a lead.
I had to wipe my hand free of the thread on a concrete fence post.
It was a big fat one and possibly I had ruined the nest a female was preparing for the millions of little ones you see .
I needed a cuppa after that.

I knew my marriage had failed when three weeks in I was cleaning the front step and there was a big spider, I don’t kill them so shouted for my husband to come and move it, there was football on the radio, so no, he did not come to rescue me.
I brought that up from time to time. !

Hot day again and I watered last night but again this morning ,low under plants so no scorching of leaves.
I hope!
Look after yourselves everyone and a speedy recovery to those who post and are ill and the loved ones of diarists who are struggling with health problems.

Yes so do I!
The person also said China are getting the monopoly on copper ,so I will be over run with slugs and snails .
Who starts these rumours  - but can you see people agreeing to having it considering its supposed origin if that rumour spreads.?
A bit like the false rumours re pork fat and beef fat in the vaccine which discouraged many people from having it and they were very vulnerable too.

I ought to have asked from whence it came!

Gosh it is hot , I can’t muster up any energy but then I ought not to,if I follow the advice to heart patients..too hot no good and too cold no good.

Hey Ho!
Lack a day, woe is me! Etc etc.
A ham butty for lunch , then I have decided to re organise my wardrobes.
All good coats and jackets in one, best trousers and skirts in another ,blouses dresses and tops in the third and everyday pants and jackets etc in the fourth .
I also need to put an indelible B or N on the labels of my good stuff ,pants especially as I can’t tell the difference between black and navy.

Oh life is full of problems .
Cheerio ,and remember it is only a garden fence rumour!

Well done Viktoria sorting out your wardrobes on such a hot day too… it always takes an age as you need to try things on to see if
a) they still fit
b) you still like them
c) are they out of date
d) need any repairs doing
e) washing & ironing…

It’s to hot for all that!

I hope it is fake new re the covid/flu vaccine being produced in China…. Although I did notice the lateral flow test kits we’ve got came from China!!!

MH - so sorry to hear your beaches are heaving…. Think I might be keeping well away as I know you will too…

Very hot here today but sadly need to do some cooking 😩😩 picked lots beetroot and ham joint to cook and cakes for tomorrow mornings usual coffee with neighbours/friends…. Might have melted by the end of the a/noon.
Was planning to do it this morning but got an early out of the blue message from my son in Brisbane to say they’d just put in an offer and been accepted for house and 4 acres down in Birkdale… about 10 mins from where they are now… gobsmacked or what… it’s in a protected area backing onto countryside that is Koala country too.
Just need to sell their house at $1.6 million 😳 seems a shame after all the work he’s done on the pool house recently but their neighbour whose built a 4 story concrete car park ( house) covering the entire plot has 4 noisy children with their pool suspended from level two parallel with my sons  living area…. So keeping fingers crossed they get a quick sale….

Right can’t put it off any longer into the kitchen then….
Take care everyone and stay safe…
Caroline

Viktoria, your black/navy conundrum reminded me of a very embarrassing incident at work some years ago. I had bought two pairs of similar court shoes, one black pair and one navy - I’m sure you can guess the rest🤣. I nearly got away with it until my supposed best friend exclaimed very loudly “you’ve got odd shoes on”. Still love her to bits though.

I did the same  going to a funeral, luckily I just  had enough time to come  home and change  but  the  deceased  would  have  loved it if I  had turned  up at  his funeral in odd  coloured shoes

Now my OH was colour blind with beiges fawns and soft greys ,as is my second son ( hope you are sitting down —-) he worked fir the MOD after Uni for a while ! Tanks and ballistics!
I admired a pair of Khaki pants he had in an olive gree khaki but his shirt was a Sandy beige, he truly thought they were the same colour .
My OH regularly appeared wearing a grey and a  beige sock ,if told with total  sang froid he’d say “ I have another pair at home just like these!”
I had to pair them up for him ,he thought he was helping when I was folding washing etc!
It was a good job we were never invaded, he would have put the kettle on!

Just quick as I will have to get started getting ready to go to nightshift soon ..
Candleflame, I am sorry to read of the pain your husband has been suffering, I hope he did get his appointment.  How relieved he will feel when this gets sorted out.

Roobarb, this is good news that some of your appetite has come back.  Also, what a lovely, kind and thoughtful friend you have to leave you flowers.  It is nice to read about uplifting things like this.

It feels quite hard to keep up with everything on here when I am on nightshifts so I haven't really caught up with everything yet ..
Take care everyone. :)

Evening everyone
Thanks for the good wishes for my husband. Had a bit of a saga but he has been seen today !
Had to ring at 9am and of course it was busy. So we did a two phone ringing with him on the house phone and me on my mobile. I called the number 36 times ( phone tells you these things ) and husband rang it about 25 times just cos the house phone is slower.
Mobile connected first so he sat waiting till he made it to the front of the queue. Needless to say all the emergency appts had gone for today and to phone back tomorrow at 9am….Husband has high blood pressure so you can imagine how he was feeling by then. However staff member was lovely and said she had my mobile number and if they got a cancellation she’d ring us. About half an hour later it rang with a cancellation at 12.it must have been you rootschatters sending good wishes that did it!

Upshot is he has antibiotics and he’ll need a follow up appt probably not available till late August then two teeth extracting probably in late September. They are very busy. But he’s been seen and has the abx so we’re relieved about that.

Good result Candleflame

I stood at  my surgery this  morning to collect a prescription that  was not at the  chemist, I held the queue but but the receptionist was on the phone to someone who would  not take  no for an answer after she had explained what the person should do  over and over  again, she was so patient, if an appt is  needed we have to ring at 8am,  she  told so many people  my guess is one would  be lucky to get an appointment

Oh that is better news, Candleflame, glad to read it.
An appointment at the Dr’s?
They have all gone by ten past eight ,trouble is there is not one full time Dr there ,all must be doing private work as only in two days etc.

The backlog of things that were treatable will now be enormous ,and of much worsened conditions.

I thought when restrictions were lifted I would feel relief etc but no,now it is more apprehension ,it is too soon .

Such a performance to get a Doctors appt these days. A total nightmare Candleflame, and I know my BP goes through the roof just thinking about such circumstances! Glad you managed though, and hoping husband continues to improve.
Good news Roobarb is recovering too.
As I understand it, the double vaccination can mean that symptoms are so mild a "victim" is unaware that they are infectious. And of course, by the time one gets an official response from a PCR test, one could infect masses of other people.  Especially now that our esteemed PM has said face coverings are no longer necessary!! >:(
My summary for the week ending 18th July:
Had a lovely day out at Lyme Regis dancing with the Morris group. Unfortunately the road to Exeter was closed for around 12 hours, and we were very late due to having to fight our way out of Torbay, and of course with the glorious weather, Lyme was packed, but we kept our distance as far as possible. Our first public performance out since 2019; it was so nice to dance again.

Quite a busy week, dashing hither and yon, getting the car prepared for its MOT, couple of trips out around the countryside to places never before ventured and then.......Friday afternoon on a trip to see a friend in Bradford on Avon from our time there...wham! bang! ,a rear end shunt whilst we were stationary and waiting to overtake a parked car transporter.
No personal damage (unless something creeps up on us) but very shaken. Car rear end not a pretty sight, but still driveable. OP admitted liability and we now waith for the insurance process.
OP hopped it as soon as she had given her details but there was a very kind couple in another car who were very helpful in making sure that we were OK and that the car was safe to drive. Eternally grateful to them and we have made contact with them since to say thank you.
So now we await the fate of our dear Honda Jazz.

Good to hear your public dancing is back on MH.

Jeff, I'm so sorry to hear about your accident, thank goodness you weren't hurt. A nasty experience nevertheless.

Today I had a phone call from the doctor's surgery, asking how I am. I was told that I could take part in the NHS monitoring system if I wanted to. There's an app to download (I think you can do it via ordinary Internet too), you record pulse and oxygen levels, temperature and how you're feeling, cough, breathing etc. You record it twice (I think) per day so that they can monitor how you are without having to visit a GP. I thought as I live on my own it's a good idea so have set it up. They were going to send an oximeter and thermometer via the fire service but as I have my own I can use them. Nice to know they're keeping an eye on me.

How very encouraging to know you will be monitored by the surgery Roobarb.
Sounds like Caroline's husband could do with similar observations, but nice to know that kind of surveillance is up and running.

Jeff - very disturbed to hear about your accident and reassuring to know those around were caring even if the person who caused the accident made a hasty retreat… it always shakes you up so hope you are both still ok and not suffering any after effects..

Great Roobarb to hear that you’re going to be monitored, helping gather information in but more importantly keeping your doctors aware of your situation.

MH - my hubbie records his blood pressure and temp on regular basis and always has done… thanks for your thoughts though.. life still the same in our household… lunch with friends cancelled today as he’s not up to it… if symptoms are still not reduced by Monday the docs will be getting another call..
Great to hear you managed to get out to do your Morris dancing despite the traffic blockages…

Candkeflame - good to hear your hubbie has finally got sorted out… it’s not an easy exercise getting inside doctors surgeries these days… good idea using two phones!

Last night the bus driver didn't take us right into the bus station, as happened the previous night.  When I questioned this (just out of curiosity) the driver said that nothing had been passed on to him about this.  He did concede though and said he would take me in but I said, no I would just walk, if he hadn't been told anything about this change.  It wasn't far and I wasn't really bothered.  I am just curious now as to whether there has been a change with this or not.  I suppose communication might not have got through to all drivers - I would not expect him to break rules as he understands them.  I will see what happens tonight.
At the station I see quite a few people not wearing masks - mostly young people.  During the day though most people I have seen are wearing masks.  It is almost as if  some  people seem to think Covid has a day job and goes home at night.
Two of the maskless are two young women sitting together playing  loud music and irritating music.  One is coughing.  I am glad when my bus comes.
This morning on my second bus a man is coughing regularly and seems to have difficulty controlling this.  He is wearing a mask only under his chin and it is not covering his his nose and mouth.  When he coughs, he is not covering his mouth.
I know that all coughs might not be a symptom of Covid and perhaps he might have a medical reason.  However, I decide enough is enough, and I get off the bus.  It was inconvenient after a long nightshift and as luck would have it the first several buses that came after that were ones I couldn't get.
I think I did the right thing though I don't want to risk things.  It was just as well I was going home from and not to nightshift and so had the time to spare.
I am pleased to see my routine test shows again as negative tonight.

I have to get ready now for nightshift and haven't had time to catch up properly and be able to respond yet  to others.  I do hope to catch up soon though.
