Title: British soldiers in India, J Conway
Post by: Jack TT on Saturday 17 July 21 20:58 BST (UK)
Hi
Just noticed your reply, Chinapaddy. My great great grandfather was also in the military in  India and got married in Oct 1880 in DumDum, India. I have a copy of the date from his service record, however have been trying unsuccessfully to track the brides father( who I think must also have been a soldier) is there any chance that you can see if there is any record for him in the archives please, I realise that you can't send a copy, but I am only an hour away from Kew if his record exists. The soldiers name was Joseph Conway and he married Mary Ann Dunn(e). His service record says SWB and there is an army number of 1172. There is also a reference to 1st Batt. Border Regt. for his NOK( now Mary Ann Conway).
Thanks for any help on this one

You have started a new thread, rather than replying to a post?

SWB = South Wales Borderers.

Thanks all for replies so far, Yes I started another thread as it was a different soldier from the original look up. I did reply to the post, however thought it might get lost due to original look up being finalised.
Still hoping someone knows of a marriage record that's hidden away.

From the military records it looks like he was in 86th Foot (number 1605) from 1869 to 1875, then 34th Foot (number 817) which became 1st Battalion, Border Regiment in June 1881, then transferred to the South Wales Borderers (number 1172) in 1884.

He was a Roman Catholic so it would be an RC marriage.
