Title: Joseph Hall
Post by: Zakerias on Monday 19 July 21 14:45 BST (UK)
I'm trying to verify the parent's of Joseph Hall (c. 1826-1878) of Corsenside, Northumberland but I am getting conflicting information. Joseph married Mary Ann Waitt on July 26th 1851, residence at the time of marriage was Wark and his father's name is listed as 'Gilbert Hall' (Farmer). Witnesses were Arthur Storey and Jane Waitt.

I cannot find any information on 'Gilbert Hall'. However, Ancestry points me in the direction of a 'Gabriel Hall' (b. 1788) and interestingly enough Joseph had a child named Gabriel (b. 1854).. Though I can find no evidence to link Gabriel and Joseph, other than proximity.

Does anyone have access to parish registers for the region or have any more information that they are willing to share?

Hi Rosie

How did you find this information? and do you think it's safe to discredit 'Gilbert Hall' from the marriage certificate, given there is no information on him? Joseph's birthplace is listed as Corsenside in the 1861 and 1871 census. In 1851 it is listed as Elsdon. I'd been leaning towards Gabriel for a long time but didn't have any connection until now.

Thank you - I didn't have his 1841 census location. I had hoped that he was still living with his parents at this time but I guess not. Back to the proximity argument where there's no evidence (or was before Rosie's post) linking Joseph and Gabriel.

1851 2417 /1

Joseph Hall, 22 yrs b Elsdon is a servant in the household of Arthur Storey in Wark.

This pretty much confirms that this is the same Joseph that married Mary Ann as Arthur Storey was a witness at their wedding. It could also explain how he met Mary Ann, as her mother's maiden name was Storey.

The 1826 baptism is on F M P from transcripts by Northumberland & Durham Family History Society

I would not think it was unreasonable for the marriage to have his father named wrongly as Gilbert.

This can now be closed.

Small update: My dad was able to find Joseph and Mary's grave on a recent trip to Northumberland (in an area of the churchyard that had previously been overgrown):
