Title: Help needed please - prison records
Post by: grom on Wednesday 28 July 21 12:13 BST (UK)
Can anyone give me advice on tracing someone who was sent to prison, haven't a lot to go on apart from he was born in 1908 in Burslem, and we think died in Harrogate prison in 1955, just don't know where to get any info from.  Thank you

Hello,
You have a very old thread where you mention  a prisoner dying in 1961.
Is this the same man?
I am not sure there is/was a prison in Harrogate but glad to be corrected.

If it is still the same man, could it be Middlesbrough? I can see a death in 1961 but no likely others 1951-1962.
You could get the death certificate to check and try newspaper searches.

We don't know anything for definite don't even know his crime or where it took place, we thought he died in 1955 in Harrogate, his name was Samuel Nash if that helps

That’s  the one from 2008
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=321499.

There are only 2 deaths 1950 -1962 for Samuel Nash b 1908. There is one in Edmonton, 1958  and the Middlesbrough one in 1961.

There was a child born 1943 and died in 1944, Samuel H Nash mmn Moss.
So presumably he was in Stoke then.

There are published trees which have Fanny, his wife, dying in 1969 as Fanny A Moss. Is that correct?

If she reverted to her maiden name, that might give a clue.
Electoral registers were resumed after the war, so you might find him with Fanny - again there might be clues from the years in the registers.

Thank you so much for this information I found the Civil Marriage of Samuel and Fanny Moss in 1932 and the birth of Samuel H in 1943 I also found the death of a Fanny Nash in Hanley in 1943 so wondered if she died in childbirth, so not sure if it was the same, but I didn't have the death of Samuel H so thank you

Yes I saw that death too which seems to fit.
The only reservation is that Samuel Henry’s death was in Burslem district  :-\

Oh right, it does get so complicated sometimes, can you tell me where I could find the electoral registers I don't know where to access them, thank you in advance

To search electoral registers at a local archives, you need an address.

If Fanny is the death in 1943, that may be difficult. It might be best to check to see if it is her by buying the certificate.
If you are a member of Ancestry, you could check the published trees and try contacting the owners.
If this is your family, does someone remember th3 death of Fanny. The children would be very young when Fanny died.
